James was last seen at a casino in Primm, Nevada on May 3, 2002. Some of his belongings were later found inside his hotel room, but he may have been carrying a black attache case and a gun.

Three days later, his car was found abandoned on I-15, 25 miles from Primm and 75 miles from Las Vegas. There was no sign of him at the scene.
