In November 2007, Lisa's parents, Lawrence and Judith Ruttenberg, and grandparents, Milton and Charlotte Ruttenberg, filed a petition seeking visits with the Stebic children, now ages 12 and 13.
During the case, Lisa's family asked Craig to confirm some things he may have said in front of his children, including an alleged threat to "cut Lisa Stebic into pieces and no one would ever find her," according to court documents.
Or the time he allegedly said Lisa's face "would be on the back of a milk carton someday."
Craig never had to answer the questions, as he and his lawyer offered to compromise on visits soon after the request was made.

Amy Jacobson Wins Round One in Court Battle Against CBS
February 23, 2009
"Former NBC-5 news reporter Amy Jacobson has won round one in her defamation suit against CBS. According to the Chicago Tribune, Associate Cook County Judge Elisabeth Budzinski ruled that four of Amy Jacobson's eight counts could go forward, paving the way for what is sure to be a high-profile showdown in court.
All of this stems from Amy Jacobson's involvement in a scandal that ignited a media firestorm back in in July of 2007. Amy Jacobson had been covering the mysterious disappearance of Lisa Stebic, a Plainfield, Illinois mother of two who went missing on April 30, 2007.

Stebic, Lane Bryant killings spur task force
The Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force, consisting of 36 local law enforcement agencies, will begin operating June 1.
Fifty-seven officers from departments large and small will share resources when called to investigate a homicide or mass shooting.
Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow cited the April 2007 disappearance and potential homicide of Plainfield's Lisa Stebic and the slaying of five woman in February 2008 at a Lane Bryant store in Tinley Park as examples of the types of cases the task force would work on.

Stebic charged with assault
By STEWART WARREN swarren@scn1.com/swarren@scn1.com
"He was arrested for assault on a matter that is not related to the disappearance of his wife," Plainfield police Cmdr. Ken Ruggles said Monday afternoon.
The incident involving Stebic, 43, happened at 1:37 p.m. in front of his home, 13244 Red Star Drive, Ruggles said.
"He was arrested for the charge of assault after he made a threatening statement to a neighbor," Ruggles said, although he wouldn't elaborate.
The police went to the neighborhood after receiving a complaint about fireworks, Ruggles said.
"Beyond that, I can't comment on who was directly involved at this point," Ruggles said.

From hearsay to testimony
Lisa Stebic's husband is the only suspect is her disappearance. Could his alleged threats be used against him?
March 7, 2010
<snipped>
People said a lot of bad things about Drew Peterson after his fourth wife went missing. The same thing happened to Craig Stebic, whose wife Lisa vanished in April 2007.
While seeking visitation rights to their grandchildren in 2008, Lisa's parents asked Stebic to confirm whether he said he could "cut Lisa Stebic into pieces and no one would ever find her," according to court documents. They also alleged he may have said Lisa's face "would be on the back of a milk carton someday."
Previously inadmissible in court, some hearsay statements may make it into Peterson's trial, thanks to a new state law passed in 2008 that allows hearsay evidence from witnesses determined to have been murdered to keep them from testifying.
Could Craig Stebic face hearsay testimony in court one day? The Stebics were in the midst of a divorce when Lisa disappeared, and the hearsay law applies to both civil and criminal cases.
The day she disappeared Lisa sent her attorney a petition to temporarily evict Craig from their house while the case was pending.
Dangerous law?
Stebic's attorney, George Lenard, is part of the team representing Drew Peterson. Lenard declined to comment on the Peterson hearsay hearing because the judge has not issued his ruling.
No new leads
At this point, Plainfield police say they have no immediate plan to apply the law to the Stebic case, but are watching to see what happens with the hearsay law in Peterson's case. "It's something that's so relatively new that it's my understanding that the state's attorney is not looking at that angle in the Stebic investigation," said Plainfield police Detective Sgt. Troy Kivisto.
Charles B. Pelkie, spokesman for Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow, declined to comment on whether the hearsay law could apply to the Stebic case. Perhaps new information will come up in the future, or Lisa will be found, to complete the puzzle of her disappearance, he said. But he did not rule out the option of the hearsay law, "should it become necessary."
"I imagine they continue to look only at Craig Stebic. That's the way it's always going to be. That's a real problem," Lenard said. "They refuse to look anywhere else."
Lenard declined to comment on whether he or Stebic have information that points to another culprit in Lisa's disappearance.

After 3 Years, Stebic Investigation Gets More Help
PLAINFIELD, Ill. (AP) ―
A suburban Chicago police department that's been investigating the disappearance of a woman for three years is getting some help.
A task force made up of officers and crime scene technicians from 36 agencies in Will and Grundy counties, the Illinois State Police and the FBI will assist Plainfield Police detectives in their investigation into the April 2007 disappearance of Lisa Stebic.
In an announcement made Friday, officials said Plainfield police will continue to lead the investigation.

Police step up search for Lisa Stebic
April 30, 2010
BY DAN ROZEK Staff Reporter
Three years after Lisa Stebic vanished, police are stepping up — not scaling back — their search for the missing Plainfield woman.
A new regional police task force will assist Plainfield investigators in trying to determine what happened to the 37-year-old mother of two young children who was last seen at her home on April 30, 2007.
“It never hurts to have fresh eyes look at an investigation,” Plainfield Police Chief William Doster said Friday.
Marking the anniversary of Stebic’s disappearance, Plainfield police announced they will begin working with the Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force to solve the baffling case.
The regional task force, launched last year, can field more than 80 detectives and crime scene specialists to assist suburban departments in demanding investigations.
The Plainfield department has five investigators.
“Criminal investigations can be very complex, dynamic and challenging. When you have a team of highly skilled, well-trained, seasoned detectives at your disposal, it only makes sense to bring them in,” said Joliet Police Chief Fred Hayes, who chairs the task force’s executive board.

Remembering Lisa
May 16, 2010
Thirty-seven purple balloons blew in the wind Saturday evening, along with four white ones.
The purple balloons represented the years Lisa Ruttenberg Stebic was around to celebrate her birthday -- the four were for the birthdays she has been missing.
"(Lisa) laughed loud. She was fun," said Melanie Greenberg, Lisa's cousin and a family spokeswoman. "She loved every celebration."
