McDaniel's Grandfather Stung by Dashed Dreams, Possible Darkside
It was a call that he flat-out knew would come in the months ahead...

Browning, a retired railroad man, a widower, imagined answering the phone at his Flint River farmhouse and hearing the kid say, “Granddaddy, I passed the bar. I’m gonna get me this job.”

Browning gazed toward his barn, his okra patch beside it, and explained why that much-anticipated phone call will probably never come.

McDaniel Will Plead Not Guilty in Giddings Murder Case

Stephen McDaniel will plead “not guilty” at an arraignment hearing sometime in the next few weeks, his lawyer said Wednesday.
McDaniel, 26, who was indicted Tuesday in connection with the murder of his Mercer University law school classmate Lauren Giddings, “wants this case resolved,” defense attorney Floyd Buford said. “His family does, too.”

Sources: Lauren Giddings' Garment found in McDaniel's Apartment
By AMY LEIGH WOMACK and JOE KOVAC JR. - Telegraph staff

Potential evidence in the Lauren Giddings slaying investigation sent to an FBI lab includes a pair of the victim’s underwear discovered in her suspected killer’s apartment, sources familiar with the investigation say.
The panties found in a search of Stephen Mark McDaniel’s apartment bear Giddings’ DNA, a source close to the case said Tuesday.

DA Won't Comment on Giddings Evidence

Bibb County's District Attorney says he won't comment on a report that authorities found a pair of Lauren Giddings' panties in her accused killer's next-door apartment.

Asked about the newspaper report, District Attorney Greg Winters declined comment. In a text reply to 13WMAZ's Randall Savage, Winters wrote, "No comment. Not very happy that information was leaked."

Death Penalty Sought for McDaniel in Lauren Giddings Case

Winters [Bibb County's District Attorney] says he's filed a motion seeking the death penalty
on the grounds that Giddings killing was "outrageously or wantonly vile, horrible or inhuman in that it involved depravity of mind."

In addition to Giddings' murder, he is charged with two counts of burglary and with sexual exploitation of a child, for allegedly possessing child pornography.

Update: Giddings family supports DA’s decision to seek death against McDaniel
“It’s good to see the process moving along. ... We hope it’s over as soon as possible,” said Kaitlyn Wheeler, Giddings’ sister.

Lauren Giddings and the Man Whose Heart She Won

David S. Vandiver, an athletic man in his late 40s, spent the last Sunday in June in Southern California honing his golf game at an instructional school near Palm Springs.

He remembers because, nearly six months later, he remembers most everything about that trip in excruciating detail.

Part II
It Was Just Like Her: Unmissable

A close friend from her days at Agnes Scott College and, later, at the law firm where they interned, thinks she favored pink because of the way she embodied its beam.

“It was just like her. Unmissable,” that close friend recalls in an e-mail.

“Unapologetic in its simultaneous innocence and boldness, and certain to draw a smile and start a conversation. If there are two things of this world that sum (her) up they are champagne and the color pink -- they are sweet, life-affirming and cause for celebration.

Chief Burns of the Macon Police Department commented on Lauren Giddings's murder case in an interview with WMAZ today.

Macon Police Chief Answers Viewers' Questions
He says investigators are still waiting for more evidence to come back from the FBI's forensic crime lab. He said the FBI has not given the police department a timeline on when to expect results. He says the police department has turned everything over to the district attorney's office.

Chief Burns also responded to viewer questions about community issues.

McDaniel's Attorneys will Challenge Grand Jury Makeup, Searches in Giddings Case
At a half-hour-long morning hearing in Bibb County Superior Court to go over capital-case ground rules, McDaniel’s attorneys, Floyd Buford and co-counsel Franklin J. Hogue, noted a number of issues they intend to contest.

Video of the hearing

McDaniel Defense Plans Challenges, May Contest Warrant
Nearly seven months after a slaying that shocked and captivated many locals, the 26-year-old defendant showed maybe the most outward signs yet that he has taken an active role in his defense.
Gone was the gaunt, glazed-over shell of a suspect who trudged into court. He looked attentive, studious even...

Kristin S. Miller of Atlanta, who met Giddings when the two were undergraduates at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, was sitting in the front row behind the prosecution table...

“He doesn’t look like the monster in the shackles and the orange jumpsuit, but he’s still a monster. ... I’m just kind of surprised he has dropped the zombie act,” Miller, 28, said.

“I made eye contact with him for the first time today and it was chilling. It was disgusting.”

In a prosecution that could lean heavily on dozens of potential pieces of evidence that Macon police collected last summer and sent to FBI and GBI labs, all forensic testing and analysis is now complete, a source familiar with the investigation told The Telegraph on Tuesday.

Bibb County Prosecutors -- "Mickey Finn" Post at Center of McDaniel Hearing
By AMY LEIGH WOMACK — awomack@macon.com
A Bibb County judge ruled Tuesday that the bond for accused killer Stephen McDaniel should remain at $850,000...

The Telegraph learned in April that Hollis Browning, the grandfather who owned a farm in Pike County, died April 24. Browning offered to pay a retainer for a lawyer to represent McDaniel when he was first charged with burglary July 1...

The man who claims that he authored the “Mickey Finn” post lives in Oklahoma. He first heard of McDaniel, who posted to the operatorchan.org message board, after McDaniel allegedly wrote about hypothetical ways to deal with religious demonstrators after the man’s brother was killed in Afghanistan...

Night of Panic: The night before Lauren Giddings was found dead, her friends and kin sounded the alarm

Sunday, June 24, 2012

By AMY LEIGH WOMACK and JOE KOVAC JR. — Telegraph staff

From the article, Lauren's mom, Karen Giddings:

In the most depressing times, the thought that keeps running through her mind about losing Lauren, about her life ripped away, is that “I just don’t know why.”
Sometimes she tries to imagine Lauren in the afterlife.

“Of course, I think Lauren’s in heaven, but to think of her on this white, fluffy cloud, it wouldn’t be good enough for her,” Karen says.

“I talked to a priest friend of mine, and he said, ‘She’s not floating around. She’s at this heavenly banquet. There’s a feast and there’s wine.’ ... I try to visualize that, because that is Lauren.”

Amen, Mrs. Giddings, amen.

Defense Attorneys: DNA on Saw May Not Belong to McDaniel

By AMY LEIGH WOMACK and JOE KOVAC JR. — Telegraph staff

A hacksaw with Giddings’ DNA on it may not contain McDaniel’s DNA. An FBI analysis of the saw showed it had DNA from three or more people, according to one of the defense motions...

Later, police found a pair of green-and-white, blood-stained panties in a dresser drawer inside the apartment of her accused killer, Stephen McDaniel.

A medical examiner would later find a few, several-inch-long brown hairs on Giddings’ abdomen. A clump of brown and blond hair was on the back of her shorts.

Giddings, 27, had blond hair. McDaniel, now 27, had shoulder-length brown hair at the time.

Lawyers Want McDaniel's Perfect Murder Discussion Kept Out of Court

By AMY LEIGH WOMACK and JOE KOVAC JR. — Telegraph staff

McDaniel’s defense team, in a Friday court filing, dismisses such “college ramblings” between McDaniel and his friend as “casual conversations of young college students based on curious musings, not deep criminal confessions.”

Documents in Giddings Slaying Chronicle Case's Early Hours

Quote:

But what went on in a roughly 20-hour span in the immediate aftermath of Lauren Giddings’ torso being found has largely remained a secret.

What may or may not have happened in those hours could prove pivotal in the defense that Stephen McDaniel’s lawyers are mounting for their 27-year-old client.

Court documents filed Friday by McDaniel’s attorneys, Franklin J. Hogue and Floyd Buford, also reveal an almost hour-by-hour chronology that police and prosecutors have, for the most part, kept under wraps since their probe began a year and a half ago.

Wrongful death suit seeks search for Giddings' remains

In a $5 million-plus wrongful death lawsuit, the parents of slain Mercer University law graduate Lauren Giddings contend that her accused killer stole pictures of her and, after dismembering her, painted over blood stains on her apartment walls.
In hopes of finding her remains, they want a federal judge to let them search farmland that belonged to one of suspect Stephen McDaniel’s grandfathers.

Search Did Not Find Lauren Giddings' Remains

A search for Lauren Giddings' remains Friday did not turn up any evidence, according to Jami Gaudet with the Macon Police Department. Major Charles Stone with the police department says last week a woman told investigators she believes she saw Stephen McDaniel, who is accused of killing neighbor and classmate Giddings, come out of woods near Houston Road about two years ago.

In an effort to find the rest of Giddings' remains, her parents have filed a $5 million civil suit against Stephen McDaniel, the man accused of her murder and dismemberment. Billy and Karen Giddings, of North Laurel, hope a judge will allow a search of a 63-acre wooded property owned by McDaniel's late grandfather, where the Giddings believe McDaniel may have hidden other parts of their daughter's body.

Detective: McDaniel was ‘staring out into space like a zombie’

Testimony began Monday in pre-trial hearings for 27-year-old McDaniel, who is charged with murder in the slaying of Lauren Giddings, his Mercer University law school classmate and next-door neighbor.
Among the issues being argued in the hearings is whether McDaniel voluntarily talked to police prior to being arrested and whether two searches of his apartment, which preceded multiple searches with warrants, were consensual

snipped
The investigators testified they noticed a change in McDaniel’s demeanor as he talked with the media and then later after he was led to the police mobile command vehicle where he was given water and offered medical attention.

Patterson said he saw McDaniel fall to the ground while talking with the media. He was being told police had found the torso. “I thought he had fainted from the heat,” Patterson said. McDonald said it looked like he was hyperventilating.

Back at the mobile command center, Patterson said McDaniel “wasn’t talking. He was just staring out into space like a zombie.”

Prosecutors contend McDaniel’s words are “highly probative of his guilt,” showing “motive, intent, preparation, and plan,” and that he “discussed the killing of human beings without compassion or any outwardly apparent signs of conscience.”

Their motion notes that McDaniel told acquaintances of “cutting up a body, concealing it in plastic bags, and dumping the body parts in different locations.”

“These conversations were the casual conversations of young college students based on curious musings, not deep criminal confessions,” the attorneys wrote in a motion late last year.

“I don’t have anything in my memory that’s quite that vivid,” Ingram said, “but I do remember that it was more than quartering (the body).”

He said McDaniel told him, “No, you’d wanna break it up into small pieces and you’ll wanna put it in black plastic bags, and then he said you’d throw the black plastic bags in with your laundry and you’d sneak them out of the building. ... He said then you’d go and you would distribute it ... throw it out for anyone to spread the pieces throughout the surrounding areas.

McDaniel jurors will hear about knives, sword found in his apartment

December 12, 2013

Thursday’s pretrial hearing in Bibb County Superior Court marked the first time a videotaped police interrogation of McDaniel was made public.

The video offered a glimpse into the investigation in the late-night hours of June 30, 2011, when McDaniel was well on his way to becoming a suspect in the dismemberment murder of Lauren Giddings.
Quote:
In other evidentiary concerns Thursday, Judge Howard Simms ruled to exclude talk at the February trial about inconclusive luminol tests for blood conducted on Giddings’ bathtub and bathroom tile.

Simms denied a defense motion that argued the “perfect murder” recollections shouldn’t be allowed at trial.

Simms also denied another defense motion to exclude a search of McDaniel’s body for scratches. Also, the judge will allow word of ponchos and an earring found in McDaniel’s car.

Prosecutors will also get to discuss door keys that police found in the apartment that would have given McDaniel access to Giddings’ apartment, as well as all others in their complex.

The judge will allow testimony that investigators found swords, knives and a stick-like weapon or staff in McDaniel’s apartment, but not guns or a baseball bat that turned up in searches.

The girlfriend of a man who lived in the apartment beneath Lauren Giddings says she saw Giddings’ accused killer toting “a large stick” and later heard “movement” in Giddings’ residence the last night Giddings was seen alive.

Prosecutors filed a motion this week seeking a judge’s order to compel the girlfriend to testify at Stephen McDaniel’s murder trial, which is set to begin April 28 in Henry County and last about two weeks.

Cooke claims that while waiting in the car outside the apartments, Boyd saw McDaniel "walking from the side of the apartment building where the garbage cans were kept while carrying a large stick-like object."

Cooke adds: "After seeing Stephen McDaniel outside the apartment, Ms. Boyd left the vehicle and went inside Mr. Bostic's apartment. While inside the apartment, she heard movement from above in the victim's apartment which aids the State in establishing a timeline of events."

In an “unopposed motion” to stay the civil proceedings until after Stephen McDaniel’s criminal trial, the Giddingses’ lawyers allege that McDaniel’s lawyer has said “he was instructed not to answer the discovery by Judge Howard Simms.”
