McDaniel's Grandfather Stung by Dashed Dreams, Possible Darkside
It was a call that he flat-out knew would come in the months ahead...
Browning, a retired railroad man, a widower, imagined answering the phone at his Flint River farmhouse and hearing the kid say, “Granddaddy, I passed the bar. I’m gonna get me this job.”
Browning gazed toward his barn, his okra patch beside it, and explained why that much-anticipated phone call will probably never come.

McDaniel Will Plead Not Guilty in Giddings Murder Case
Stephen McDaniel will plead “not guilty” at an arraignment hearing sometime in the next few weeks, his lawyer said Wednesday.
McDaniel, 26, who was indicted Tuesday in connection with the murder of his Mercer University law school classmate Lauren Giddings, “wants this case resolved,” defense attorney Floyd Buford said. “His family does, too.”

Sources: Lauren Giddings' Garment found in McDaniel's Apartment
By AMY LEIGH WOMACK and JOE KOVAC JR. - Telegraph staff
Potential evidence in the Lauren Giddings slaying investigation sent to an FBI lab includes a pair of the victim’s underwear discovered in her suspected killer’s apartment, sources familiar with the investigation say.
The panties found in a search of Stephen Mark McDaniel’s apartment bear Giddings’ DNA, a source close to the case said Tuesday.
DA Won't Comment on Giddings Evidence
Bibb County's District Attorney says he won't comment on a report that authorities found a pair of Lauren Giddings' panties in her accused killer's next-door apartment.
Asked about the newspaper report, District Attorney Greg Winters declined comment. In a text reply to 13WMAZ's Randall Savage, Winters wrote, "No comment. Not very happy that information was leaked."

Death Penalty Sought for McDaniel in Lauren Giddings Case
Winters [Bibb County's District Attorney] says he's filed a motion seeking the death penalty on the grounds that Giddings killing was "outrageously or wantonly vile, horrible or inhuman in that it involved depravity of mind."
In addition to Giddings' murder, he is charged with two counts of burglary and with sexual exploitation of a child, for allegedly possessing child pornography.

Update: Giddings family supports DA’s decision to seek death against McDaniel
“It’s good to see the process moving along. ... We hope it’s over as soon as possible,” said Kaitlyn Wheeler, Giddings’ sister.

Lauren Giddings and the Man Whose Heart She Won
David S. Vandiver, an athletic man in his late 40s, spent the last Sunday in June in Southern California honing his golf game at an instructional school near Palm Springs.
He remembers because, nearly six months later, he remembers most everything about that trip in excruciating detail.
Part II
It Was Just Like Her: Unmissable
A close friend from her days at Agnes Scott College and, later, at the law firm where they interned, thinks she favored pink because of the way she embodied its beam.
“It was just like her. Unmissable,” that close friend recalls in an e-mail.
“Unapologetic in its simultaneous innocence and boldness, and certain to draw a smile and start a conversation. If there are two things of this world that sum (her) up they are champagne and the color pink -- they are sweet, life-affirming and cause for celebration.

Chief Burns of the Macon Police Department commented on Lauren Giddings's murder case in an interview with WMAZ today.
Macon Police Chief Answers Viewers' Questions
He says investigators are still waiting for more evidence to come back from the FBI's forensic crime lab. He said the FBI has not given the police department a timeline on when to expect results. He says the police department has turned everything over to the district attorney's office.
Chief Burns also responded to viewer questions about community issues.

McDaniel's Attorneys will Challenge Grand Jury Makeup, Searches in Giddings Case
At a half-hour-long morning hearing in Bibb County Superior Court to go over capital-case ground rules, McDaniel’s attorneys, Floyd Buford and co-counsel Franklin J. Hogue, noted a number of issues they intend to contest.

McDaniel Defense Plans Challenges, May Contest Warrant
Nearly seven months after a slaying that shocked and captivated many locals, the 26-year-old defendant showed maybe the most outward signs yet that he has taken an active role in his defense.
Gone was the gaunt, glazed-over shell of a suspect who trudged into court. He looked attentive, studious even...
Kristin S. Miller of Atlanta, who met Giddings when the two were undergraduates at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, was sitting in the front row behind the prosecution table...
“He doesn’t look like the monster in the shackles and the orange jumpsuit, but he’s still a monster. ... I’m just kind of surprised he has dropped the zombie act,” Miller, 28, said.
“I made eye contact with him for the first time today and it was chilling. It was disgusting.”

Bibb County Prosecutors -- "Mickey Finn" Post at Center of McDaniel HearingBy AMY LEIGH WOMACK — awomack@macon.com
A Bibb County judge ruled Tuesday that the bond for accused killer Stephen McDaniel should remain at $850,000...
The Telegraph learned in April that Hollis Browning, the grandfather who owned a farm in Pike County, died April 24. Browning offered to pay a retainer for a lawyer to represent McDaniel when he was first charged with burglary July 1...
The man who claims that he authored the “Mickey Finn” post lives in Oklahoma. He first heard of McDaniel, who posted to the operatorchan.org message board, after McDaniel allegedly wrote about hypothetical ways to deal with religious demonstrators after the man’s brother was killed in Afghanistan...

Night of Panic: The night before Lauren Giddings was found dead, her friends and kin sounded the alarm
Sunday, June 24, 2012
By AMY LEIGH WOMACK and JOE KOVAC JR. — Telegraph staff
From the article, Lauren's mom, Karen Giddings:
In the most depressing times, the thought that keeps running through her mind about losing Lauren, about her life ripped away, is that “I just don’t know why.”
Sometimes she tries to imagine Lauren in the afterlife.
“Of course, I think Lauren’s in heaven, but to think of her on this white, fluffy cloud, it wouldn’t be good enough for her,” Karen says.
“I talked to a priest friend of mine, and he said, ‘She’s not floating around. She’s at this heavenly banquet. There’s a feast and there’s wine.’ ... I try to visualize that, because that is Lauren.”
Amen, Mrs. Giddings, amen.

Defense Attorneys: DNA on Saw May Not Belong to McDaniel
By AMY LEIGH WOMACK and JOE KOVAC JR. — Telegraph staff
A hacksaw with Giddings’ DNA on it may not contain McDaniel’s DNA. An FBI analysis of the saw showed it had DNA from three or more people, according to one of the defense motions...
Later, police found a pair of green-and-white, blood-stained panties in a dresser drawer inside the apartment of her accused killer, Stephen McDaniel.
A medical examiner would later find a few, several-inch-long brown hairs on Giddings’ abdomen. A clump of brown and blond hair was on the back of her shorts.
Giddings, 27, had blond hair. McDaniel, now 27, had shoulder-length brown hair at the time.
Lawyers Want McDaniel's Perfect Murder Discussion Kept Out of Court
By AMY LEIGH WOMACK and JOE KOVAC JR. — Telegraph staff
McDaniel’s defense team, in a Friday court filing, dismisses such “college ramblings” between McDaniel and his friend as “casual conversations of young college students based on curious musings, not deep criminal confessions.”

The team of lawyers representing Stephen McDaniel-- the man accused of killing and dismembering Mercer Law graduate Lauren Giddings-- are challenging the District Attorney's intent to seek the death penalty.
DA Greg Winters filed his notice of intent to seek the death penalty almost a year ago on the grounds that Giddings' murder was "outrageously or wantonly vile, horrible or inhuman in that it involved depravity of mind."

Documents in Giddings Slaying Chronicle Case's Early Hours
Published December 15, 2012, Updated December 17, 2012
By AMY LEIGH WOMACK and JOE KOVAC JR. — Telegraph staff
But what went on in a roughly 20-hour span in the immediate aftermath of Lauren Giddings’ torso being found has largely remained a secret.
What may or may not have happened in those hours could prove pivotal in the defense that Stephen McDaniel’s lawyers are mounting for their 27-year-old client.
Court documents filed Friday by McDaniel’s attorneys, Franklin J. Hogue and Floyd Buford, also reveal an almost hour-by-hour chronology that police and prosecutors have, for the most part, kept under wraps since their probe began a year and a half ago.
