Mr. Highfill’s family is still unknown. He was reportedly born in Biloxi, MS, but had been in the Atlanta area for many decades. He was known to his landlord and friends for more than 20 years, and used his landlord as his emergency contact for healthcare issues. He told his friends he had no living family, and Accurint and Ancestry searches bear that out.

Well that Census I posted isn't a match... that Herbert H Highfill Jr was born in 1924 and died in 1998.

Gulfport and Biloxi are one metropolitan area. There is a "Hubbard Highfill" born to John and Laura, aged 2 months, born in Georgia in the 1930 census (reflecting age as of April 1 1930). They also have a child "Hubert Highland" but he is born in Georgia 1919 and died in California 1995.

This family went from Mississippi to Georgia then back to Mississippi, children born in both places. Could Hubbard be Herbert H? Birth date fits and locations are very close.

I also saw a census record for the same family in 1930 in Cave Springs GA and wondered the same thing. I think it is a strong possibility that Herbert was once Hubbard. All the boys in the family had middle initial of H.

I've been waiting on ancestry to get the 1940 census searchable by name to see if I could find the family again.

They weren't at the same address in 1940 according to what I've seen.

I searched 1940 Cave Springs and didn't find them.

Looks like the mom, maiden name Laura R Riley, died in California in 1954. I've found death dates for almost all of the children with last one being 1995, which fits with Herbert saying he had no family left.
