WVC Council and WVCPD meets behind closed doors in anticipation of lawsuit

West Valley City • Amid growing criticism of the police investigation into the disappearance of Susan Powell, city council members on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with Chief Thayle "Buzz" Nielsen to discuss the case.
The council members voted at a study meeting to go into executive session to discuss "pending or reasonably imminent litigation."

....and in a related story, there will be a new chief of police in WVCPD. *sarcasm*

We can hope, right.

No Sunshine laws in Utah?

Washington Senator Pam Roach is seeking to change laws in Washington to prevent parents who are being investigated for murder do not have visitation rights to their children

http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=1984...impact-in-wash

It appears that every LE dept that had anything to do with this case, except Utah is trying to rectify problems in the system. Utah just appears to be in the CYA mode all along. Clearly they never put the "best interest of the children" as a first and foremost issue. There are laws in place to protect children and share info with CPS - even in other states when kids are at risk.

I'm sensing a lot of Utah's reactions/inactions are political. Both Big P and Little P. I suspect WVCPD is the scapegoat here. The WA sheriff said as much in his interview - good detective work - it just didn't go anywhere.

Why? And who, really, squelched it from going further? Now we're getting into some corruption issues...

WVCPD is no longer speaking on the case? What a laugh.. it is obvious they have kept their mouths shut far too long already.. What's new? Had they spoken up and shared info long ago we may still have Charlie and Braden with us. What a crock of nonsense. CYA after the fact. We can praise all day about the evidence they collected but they did nothing with it, ending in the brutal murder of two innocent, vulnerable children.
Shame on you and your ineffective protocols... wake up!

Former US Attorney for Utah says there was enough to press charges for obstruction without a double jeapordy issue for bringing charges against Josh later.

Are the PD &/or Atty's "that gambled with two little people's lives on trying to make a pretty package for their court case" - elected officials? Does Utah really want these people making decisions for their citizens under the guise of "to Serve and Protect"? Sick and Wrong - that is my opinion and I am sticking to it. I personally feel they (Utah LE & Attys) sacrificed these children so they could have a perfect case instead of allowing a Grand Jury to make that decision. Is there some sort of OMBUDSMAN for the Utah LE an State's Atty's office reviewing this case and all of the places it went wrong? If not. . . it is HIGH Time someone had to answer to higher ups and the changes that need to be made.

They agreed unanimously? No arm twisting indicated? I'm wondering if there might be something they can still use in the ongoing case against SP.

Very disappointing that the Utah press seems to have said, "Oh, okay," and gone away.

Where are the lawsuits?

Washington State Child Fatality Review report confirms Utah did not share information with authorities in Washington that could have kept this children safe and possibly prevented these children's deaths. Bring on the law suits and open your check book Utah . . . you have a lot of explaining to do! Had Washington State had the sealed information that Utah LE was in posession of early on . . . the supervised visits in Josh's home may never have been possible. There would have been more emphasis on Josh's potential for DV against Susan and subsequent evaluations would have been made based upon those factors. The delay in sharing the sealed info with 8 people involved in the Washington CPS case directly placed these children at risk . . . as the children had been having supervised visits in Josh's home for quite some time and the Judge in Washington was reluctant to suspend or restrict those visits - given the children had come to anticipate them in their Father's home over several months without further proof of a safety risk. The original reason the children were placed out of the home in Washington was due to the risk that Steven and what was in Steven's home presented to the children. Since nothing was disclosed about Josh and the possible risk he presented to the children - Washington was in a difficult bind. Had Utah given up the info and evidence they had on Josh . . . these kids might well be alive today (IMO)

While I think Utah seems to have done absolutely nothing to protect the boys, Washington can't congratulate itself on having done much either. Everyone in the U.S. knew who Josh was, what he was suspected of, and that his wife was mysteriously missing. Had there been a single person in WA who gave two hoots, they could have publicly pressured Utah into giving them information. They sure were eager to do that public shaming of Utah once the boys were dead.
