Colorado officials fear an experienced Chicago hiker not seen since leaving for a solo hiking trip a week ago could be in danger because he was not familiar with the treacherous hiking path near Vail.
James Nelson, 31, a member of the Chicago Backpackers Meetup Group, set out Oct. 3 on a five day, 25-mile hike of Mount Holy Cross, said Shannon Cordingly, a spokeswoman with the Eagle County Sheriff's office. Authorities launched a search when he did not return on Friday.

The family of missing Ravenswood hiker James Nelson will be holding a vigil and raising funds for Colorado search and rescue teams that attempted to locate Nelson, the family announced today. The vigil will be held in Nelson’s home town at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2301 E Court St, Iowa City, IA. Sat, Nov 6, 2:30P.
James is from Iowa, was doing a 25 mile hike, in CO.
