When I saw this thread, I instantly wondered why I hadn't heard about it locally - then again, it is kinda far from the city of Chicago.

Lake Villa is a suburb about an hour and a half North of Chicago - pretty small, and the closer metro area would be Waukegan.

---

Have not heard about this on the local news, but I'm in Chicago - maybe it has hit further markets by Wisconsin and Waukegan.

Prayers and well wishes to this family - hopefully he's found quickly.

His I-PASS transponder was recorded traveling northbound on Interstate 294 through a toll booth at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Around the same time, police said, Steward reportedly had a phone conversation with his employer.

A signal from his cellphone was detected in the area of the 2700 block of South River Road in Des Plaines about 10:28 p.m. Friday night, but since then his cellphone has been off, police said.

The place where he paid a toll and the place his phone last pinged are less than a mile from one another (as the bird flies). Unbelievable. It appears to be at the same exit as the toll. I'm having problems with Google maps cooperating.

Hope he is found really soon.

Steward, formerly of Vernon Hills, was on his way from work to his home in Lake Villa but never arrived. Steward's parents still reside in Vernon Hills.

Nicholas Steward was last seen driving a white 2008 Saturn, police said in a news release. He did not return home from work Friday, and a missing-person report was filed Saturday, according to police.

So at 5:30pm his Ipass pinged that he was traveling North from the Touhy toll booth, but five hours later at 10:30pm his cell phone pinged less then a mile away in the same area?

Someone else using the cell?? Was it thrown out?? Strange.

I hope he's found soon.

"He called his wife to tell her he was on his way home from work but never made it there," said Vole.

This area is rather urban, so it isn't like he drove off the road and is unconscious in his car somewhere.

My only thought is a body of water. In the area are: Axehead Lake and the Des Plaines River. I'm not sure how deep the river is, but there is a dam nearby. The lake appears to be pretty small. (Source: google maps)

Maybe he left his cell phone at a gas station if he did go off and get cigarettes?

I294 would be very busy at 5:30 pm on a Friday. It would be nearly impossible to leave the roadway and crash or for foul play without someone seeing something. River Rd would be fairly busy as well at that time but possibly light traffic at 10:30 pm. I see a pond near the area of the last cell ping. How accurate can the location of a cell phone be located? A few feet,? A quarter mile?

It's very urban, but there's also lots of nearby secluded forrest preserves in the area. Did he go buy cigarettes, pull into the forrest preserve to have a smoke, and meet foul play??

Another thought. O'Hare airport is very close by where his last pings are located.

Just throwing ideas out there...

I used to live in the area, and yes it is unbelievably congested- making the liklihood of him going off-road in some type of accident unseen by others very, very unlikely.

A couple questions:
1) What was the call to his employer about at 5:30? Who is his employer?
2) Was the call home to the wife a normal occurrence?
3) Surveillance video from gas stations near the ping?
4) It seems strange to me that someone would exit the expressway at that time of day to purchase smokes. As stated above, it is unbelievably congested, and getting back on can add 30 minutes to an already long commute. I just don't see it.
5) Any trouble at home?
6) Any legal troubles?

ETA: OK, number 4 isn't a question. So sue me!

Lake Villa really isn't far from Chicago - the long commute time is mainly due to horrible traffic. I'm not terribly far from there and they would definitely receive Chicago television stations there. I did see reports on the morning and noon news which is what brought me back here after a bit of a hiatus.

My question - how did the wife get local police to consider him missing less than 24 hours after his last known contact. I always thought that 48 hours was pretty standard for missing adults unless there was evidence to show that foul play was possible. Maybe authorities know more than they are letting on?

And what about the final ping - was it confirmed to be a call from the employer? Do we know if it was a call or text? Incoming or outgoing? So many unanswered questions but that sweet boy needs his daddy to come home.

MC Machinery is also located in Wood Dale which is a very close suburb to the city. I would expect more coverage of this on the afternoon and evening newscasts.

I wonder if they've checked out all the parking structures in Rosemont and surrounding the airport. There is a whole new area in Rosemont just off the highway where there is a big new mall, a casino and restaurants. To say nothing of the dozens and dozens of large hotels and large office buildings with large parking lots in the close vicinity to where his phone pinged last. I really hope they find him soon.

The Des Plaines River and Axehead Lake are both right in that area, unless I've got the wrong 2700 Block South River Rd.

You are looking in the right spot- it's just EXTREMELY built up around there. Wall-to-wall traffic, too.

If he stopped for cigarettes it was probably at the oasis, a quick exit and entrance to highway that has food, coffee, gas, etc

I grew up down the street from where his phone pinged.

There's a new casino just down the street.

Childhood friend Kristin Vole, 30, of Vernon Hills said they went to Sunday school together at St. Mary of Vernon in Vernon Hills. She and other friends took the advice of a police officer, who is a friend of Steward’s, and they checked all the exits looking for his car starting at his place of employment in Wood Dale where he worked as a machinist.

“We just want to keep it up on social media and the news outlets in case someone saw something,” she said. They have also started putting posters in various places, including where she works at Ernie’s Shell Gas Station on Route 21 near Lincolnshire.
