DETROIT, MI (WDIV/CNN) - A 10-year-old boy, frightened and banged-up after a car accident, and an officer following an instinct that goes much deeper than his uniform.

Officer Lt. Joe Tucker calls it “the instinct of a father, the instinct of a man, and the instinct of a human being.”

Thursday morning, Alana Beard and her four children were on the road to school when they were involved in a crash with another car on Detroit’s west side.

“That was my first time ever in an accident,” Alana Beard said.

Tucker was in his personal car, off duty, when he drove by the accident scene. The 22-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department saw Johntez Byrd alone on the ground, and this special moment was born.

“Neighbors were tending to the other children, and the young man was still sort of alone,” Turner said of Johntez. “So he was crying and nervous, so I laid down next to him.”

More at link. What a great OFFICER! :)

This is like the cops that I know. Thank you for posting this story. :cop:

I wish more people would pay attention to events like this. That's a great cop!

You're very welcome. There are tons and tons of great cop stories out there like this. I guess they're not controversial or negative enough to get attention from some.

Ditto! :) Thanks for posting.

Amen. I wish the media would pay more attention to events like this.

Awwww, what a great person! If only more people were kind to children, we would have adults who pay forward the kindnesses they were shown as children.

Yea like the cops I know too but what about all the young people today who've never interacted with a cop? They're just learning to use the internet and what do they see and hear? They need to see the actions of the good cops, like this one IMO. Sure there are some bad cops out there but they are the minority. What will our young people do when they need help? Who will they turn to? Will they run to the cops or run away from them in fear?

A few years ago following a thunderstorm with tornado I have a patrolman find an infant alive in a tree. He brought her back to his patrol carwanting to check on her well-being and to clear the dirt that was packed in her mouth and throat. She was so hysterical she just clung to him and he held her and bounced her like she was his own. The story got out because it was caught on dash–can.

Awwwww....... a good cop and a caring, loving man.

But egads, the poor baby! Thrown up into a tree by a tornado! Amazing she survived such a violent flinging!

Warning. Tl;dr. Baseball kept me up and wired.

Absolutely true!

IMO it's not that these threads don't have great and touching stories (they do!) that keep them low in the comments, it's just there's not a lot of room for discussion after people say YAY! And Great JOB! and Shiny examples! And Lucky for the kid he had that officer there to comfort him. Maybe start a thread with daily updates? (Cop of the Day, and lets us vote? Get your Cop of the Day Smile here!) We could all enter nominations. That would at least keep on thread constant and at the top of the list. That might be fun. (I can see the googling "super awesome cute cop lost kid" "city cop saved kitty from bus barreling down at 84mph on city street!")

There's disagreement on other threads and for whatever reasons when the disagreements or speculation or theories, sleuthing, opinions, religion, all so common in WS threads show up the conversations really move, and more and more people participate. But when it's a cop like this who did a great thing all there is to say is great stuff and everyone should agree, so the conversation fades out fairly quickly. JMO. I never ignore the stories about good cops going above and behind or being kind to someone who really needed it. I read them all. I appreciate the honesty and the balance these and other happy, feelgood threads offer to the site. The balance saves my sanity frankly. :)

If someone starts posting controversial stuff for whatever in one of the threads it means dissent and disagreement and where's the fun in that?.I mean it's fun, in a way, in the deep threads, but no one wants that here, do they? (Not that I think it's likely)

Also when the more negative (or more disturbing crime related) threads get going they get the attention (more posts, higher on the new posts, they get more attention) of others who come in and post and keep it going. It's not like one side (though imho there are no sides. I know disagree, maybe just because I'm not limited to one I refuse to see it.) There are way more details in their threads, more stuff that's sleuthsable and more characters to be investigated. More poster sleuth, theorize, comment, opine and test out ideas. It just what we do ime.

SO. In conclusion I think great cops are great but I have high standards for Law Enforcement Officers and I like to be on top of the situation and when I'm researching the other stuff they do it's nice to just be reminded what the real scene is like. It's not hopeless. Take time to look at the whole picture. I do it with football players and politicians and I've never let it turn me into "ALL NFL PLAYERS ARE AWFUL!" There are lots of good guys out there on the field. (Except the Steelers.)

And one more conclusion, you have been warned JLSCook that cops and their K9s are my ultimate emotional trigger and if you post a story about a cop and his sweet, adorable, faithful puppy who saved a lamb, or a kitty, and escorted some baby turtles across the QEW you are expected to hold my and hand my kleenex while I watch. Repeatedly. :)

FTR: I am NOT anti-cop. Cops are great. I have friends and family members who are cops. I call them when I need them. I hugged the stuffing out the cop who arrested my daughter's ex-boyfriend. Bad cops are something different. I won't disrespect this thread by discussing that.

I'm anti-bad people and I don't care who the bad people are.

I didn't mean to go OT, but after reading some of the comments I thought it would be okay to come in and share my viewpoint.

Will I get a K9 story, pleeeeeease?

There is already a News That Makes You Feel Good thread, why lot an LEO News That Makes You Feel Good?

Peace! And in Dexter's words: Hugs!!

AND OT POST: I'm always ready to talk about the epidemic in Chicago. :(

If this posts a million times please forgive me. My internet is wonky tonight.
