IMO it's not that these threads don't have great and touching stories (they do!) that keep them low in the comments, it's just there's not a lot of room for discussion after people say YAY! And Great JOB! and Shiny examples! And Lucky for the kid he had that officer there to comfort him. Maybe start a thread with daily updates? (Cop of the Day, and lets us vote? Get your Cop of the Day Smile here!) We could all enter nominations. That would at least keep on thread constant and at the top of the list. That might be fun. (I can see the googling "super awesome cute cop lost kid" "city cop saved kitty from bus barreling down at 84mph on city street!")
There's disagreement on other threads and for whatever reasons when the disagreements or speculation or theories, sleuthing, opinions, religion, all so common in WS threads show up the conversations really move, and more and more people participate. But when it's a cop like this who did a great thing all there is to say is great stuff and everyone should agree, so the conversation fades out fairly quickly. JMO. I never ignore the stories about good cops going above and behind or being kind to someone who really needed it. I read them all. I appreciate the honesty and the balance these and other happy, feelgood threads offer to the site. The balance saves my sanity frankly.
If someone starts posting controversial stuff for whatever in one of the threads it means dissent and disagreement and where's the fun in that?.I mean it's fun, in a way, in the deep threads, but no one wants that here, do they? (Not that I think it's likely)
Also when the more negative (or more disturbing crime related) threads get going they get the attention (more posts, higher on the new posts, they get more attention) of others who come in and post and keep it going. It's not like one side (though imho there are no sides. I know disagree, maybe just because I'm not limited to one I refuse to see it.) There are way more details in their threads, more stuff that's sleuthsable and more characters to be investigated. More poster sleuth, theorize, comment, opine and test out ideas. It just what we do ime.
SO. In conclusion I think great cops are great but I have high standards for Law Enforcement Officers and I like to be on top of the situation and when I'm researching the other stuff they do it's nice to just be reminded what the real scene is like. It's not hopeless. Take time to look at the whole picture. I do it with football players and politicians and I've never let it turn me into "ALL NFL PLAYERS ARE AWFUL!" There are lots of good guys out there on the field. (Except the Steelers.)
And one more conclusion, you have been warned JLSCook that cops and their K9s are my ultimate emotional trigger and if you post a story about a cop and his sweet, adorable, faithful puppy who saved a lamb, or a kitty, and escorted some baby turtles across the QEW you are expected to hold my and hand my kleenex while I watch. Repeatedly.
FTR: I am NOT anti-cop. Cops are great. I have friends and family members who are cops. I call them when I need them. I hugged the stuffing out the cop who arrested my daughter's ex-boyfriend. Bad cops are something different. I won't disrespect this thread by discussing that.
I'm anti-bad people and I don't care who the bad people are.
