At some point recently it seems she must have been employed since one of the charges is larceny from an employer. MOO

Thanks Panthera...I remember reading that...question is could it be from her hubby's employer? I don't remember it specifically saying her employer but I bet that is what it meant. Thanks!

Deductive reasoning. Police haven't shared a whole lot of information about the case, but they have been pretty open about their trouble pinning down when Zahra was last known to have been alive. LEO has spoken to the mother directly (by phone) and I expect to the grandmother as well, and would certainly have gotten access to phone records by now via Australian authorities assisting. It's only in the past couple of days that they've come up with a "sighting" that puts her alive any more recently than about 6 weeks before her disappearance. Grandmother has also spoken to the press and hasn't mentioned anything about when she last spoke to Zahra. So not a peep about any phone contact with her since at least the time of the last change of residence.

Also, if grandmum (and/or mum) had been speaking to Zahra periodically by phone, it's hard to imagine they wouldn't have detected at least a hint of trouble in her tone of voice, even if she was being monitored during calls by EB/AB and not free to openly make any complaints. And if I were a loving grandmother or mother, whose young cancer survivor, amputee grand/daughter had been half way around the globe for two years with her not-too-bright dad and his "gothic fairy" internet bride, and I thought I heard even the slightest hint of worry or unhappiness in her tone, I'd step up the phone call frequency and notify Australian child welfare authorities if I found I could no longer reach her. I'd also be insisting, either directly, or if blocked by EB/AB, then through Australian child welfare authorities, on confirmation that the child was receiving appropriate follow-up care and monitoring for a cancer survivor and amputee.

Also the child was deaf, so telephone conversation may have been difficult or need Adam / Elisa to do some interpretation for each side....

I just don't see how she could have held down a job. I predict she was receiving payments based on mental illness. And I am not even trying to be funny.

VERY possible here in NC, but she would have had to give it up when she went to AU, then start all over again when she got back, and she would have had to work somewhere prior to collecting.

A trip to the doctor's with no insurance? Hmmm. 100-200, for something simple. God help you if you need xrays or even blood work.
Not familiar with the area, but I am guessing maybe 600/month for the house.
Groceries? 125 per week, I am guessing. But that would be for ample food, I think.
Guessing AB made 12/hour.

These are my guesses but in my metropolitan area, costs are much higher than they would be in Hickory, NC:

- income: $30,000-ish
- doctor: varies, depending on health care plan/coverage
- rent: $500-$900
- groceries: $150

You do understand as a CHILD her requirements are less- They just need a statement from an audiologist or Doctor saying she is hearing impaired and it isn't going to get better.
The standards applied to an adult are different.

But in Zahra's case it is all moot because the loss of her leg qualifies her all on it's own.

My post is from the childhood section of the criteria. I don't mean to be argumentative with you. It's just that this is what I know about. Not as the parent of a child on SSI but as an employee of the state of NC.

Are. You. Serious?

Could the members from the US answer a couple of questions for me.

So, based on the evidence that AB was the sole income earner in the household, what would be his wage - just a rough idea???

What does a trip to the Dr cost? Like Australians under Medicare, do you receive a rebate on a Dr's consultation. For example, I might pay $50 upfront to my GP, then take my receipt to the Medicare office and get about $23 back.

What would be a rough estimate of rent they were paying on the most recent house?

How much would a family of two adults and a child spend on groceries per week?

(Just trying to get an idea of their financial situation).
I'll add what I can

I would think he wouldn't be making anymore than $10. per hour (if that)

I don't know about rent in that area - maybe a local could help out there.

Groceries - I buy for 3 DH DD and me - now I spend anywhere from $75. to $100. per week - but could get by on much less. That includes all cleaning, laundry and various other supplies as well.

I think it would be safe to say that they were "struggling". Gasoline is $2.79 a gallon here (just stopped today). Where they were they probably drove quite a few more miles than someone in the "big city" like me - don't know. I know when we lived in rural NC (eastern) we were spending a whole lot more on gas because we had to travel a lot more. I was driving 40 miles one way to work!

HTH

OMG... that poor child. What if they took her hearing aids away and then she couldn't hear/talk to her grandmother on the phone (if she ever did anyway). No one to tell about the hellish life she had... :(

I don't think it would be worded that way if it weren't her employer. :)MOO

Even if one is married to a US citizen, if one has had a drug conviction elsewhere, one can never be legal here. I really wonder if AB had a conviction of some kind in OZ.

Everything I am reading says to get citizenship through marriage in the US you have to have been here for three years.

And I see nothing about not being allowed if you have a conviction in another country ? Might be there but I don't see it.

that is fine I'll take my 23 years of experience working with SSI and shut-up.

Again, trying to catch up, but I can't. Can someone let me know if anything new came out today? Thanks.

Wow, that's extremely different to the living costs in Australia.

In Australia, AB would have earned really, really good money at a sugar mill. He would probably have received at least $60k - $70k per year (and that's a basic wage).

A Dr's visit would be $50 tops, not specialist appointments, just a general GP visit/check up. As previously mentioned, we received around half back through Medicare

Not sure on the cost of food and rent where AB and Zahra were living. Property in Australia is getting really, really expensive, so $600 per month is not much at all.

$12 per hour is so lousy, I can't believe it. But, it seems living costs in the US are substantially lower so I guess it's all relative. Just as an aside, my 17 year old daughter earns $14 per hour - she is still at school.

Thanks for the info.

ETA: So I guess we can assume that life was better in Aus, probably less pressures from a financial perspective.

Wish I were kidding. I am looking at insurance statements...how much it would be without. This is back from when I had insurance. Now I just don't go.

Oh that's so unfair....I just don't know how people cope without insurance in the states. I hope things improve soon x x x

Not really except more talk about the sighting at the furniture store last month along with two residents of the mobile home park where AB/EB lived saying they saw them there at night about the same time as the furniture store sighting, but didn't see Zahra.

Also a new article about Zahra's grandmother and family in Australia.

Waiting for news hard on grandmother, family in Australia
