The Serial Killer Detector (plus traits of SKs and Mass Murderers)

Statistically speaking, the average serial killer is a white male from a lower-to-middle-class upbringing. In fact, over 90 percent of serial killers are men.

Most serial killers are in their 20s or 30s.

Most mass murderers are single or divorced.

As children, soon-to-be serial killers often torture animals.

More than 60 percent of serial killers wet the bed beyond the age of 12.

According to the A to Z Encyclopedia of Serial Killers, many serial killers are obsessed with starting fires. Ottis Toole, George Adorno, and Carl Panzram are just a few of the many serial killers with a childhood history of arson.

Many mass murderers and serial killers have an extraordinarily high IQ. For example, the Unabomber is a genius.

A lot of serial killers come from dysfunctional families with an absent father. Marc Lepine (mass murderer of 14 people) is one of the many examples of fatherless serial killers.

Many serial killers suffered through childhood abuse. “The Boston Strangler” Albert DeSalvo was even sold off as a slave by his alcoholic father.

Serial killers often have a history of attempted suicide. Charles Edmund Cullen, the most prolific serial killer in the history of New Jersey, had 20 suicide attempts throughout his life.

Mass murderers are often loners who have very few social connections.

Not all serial killers have a cluster of those specific traits, though, it ought to be said.

Not all serial killers have high IQ's. I can think of several with below-average intelligence. Not all have troubled/abusive childhoods, not all are men, not all are 20's-30's. Some are children. Some were raised in good, loving families.

And of course, statistics can only cater to the ones who've been caught and documented, also. It could be that serial killers with a cluster of those behaviours are more likely to make mistakes...

Not picking on the list - just, I think it ought to be put in perspective somewhat, since there's as many exceptions to each point as there are examples.

There's some good, fairly comprehensive information on the FBI site:

http://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/publications/serial-murder

And the scripps link posted in the OP is pretty awesome. I'd like to see a system like that get some funding, be expanded and improved on, to include serial rapists (who may move on from rape to murder, or go back and forth) and so on.

If I was super-rich, this is one of the things I would cheerfully fund!

The searchable database on the Scripps site is FBI SHR (Supplementary Homicide Report) data, which is now searchable on their own site ( link ) and here's the document wrt coding, etc. ( link )

the original scripps news link is broken. I found the Serial Killer detector here: http://applications.scrippsnews.com/

Thank you! I've updated the link in the opening post.

Much obliged. :)
