When is/are the only time that the PM (Private Message option) can/should be used? I know that request for personal information is not allowed.

The PM option can be used as your own leisure. However, no one is supposed to be violating our rules via PM. How is this moderated, you ask? When someone sends a PM that is a violation and the recipient alerts the PM, just like you would a post. If those involved in the PM don't alert, the mods don't know about it and are unable to assist the members.

Are there rules regarding posting a missing person that doesn't appear to have been reported missing? I was reading a case from the 1970s about a man who killed his first wife and 2 others are missing. One of the missing wives has profiles on all of the usual sites, the other does not. There are numerous articles about her being missing and suspected dead, and there are pictures in the articles, but there doesn't appear to be any official reports. I would hate to think that no one is looking for her. I don't know the proper protocol for posting her info, or if it's even allowed.

Strike through:
You know when you bold word(s) in the forum, you get this (less the spaces) at the beginning of what you want to bold [ B ] , and at the end of what you want to bold, you get this [ /B ]

So, to do a strike you will have to manually put the code in since WS doesn't have a button shown to wrap it for you. It would be this (less the spaces) at the beginning of the word(s) you want to strike
[ S ] and this at the end [ /S ]

I like to strike words
Thanks MUCH thanks for that, AnonymousD! Having been trying to figure that out for ages.

Re: YT video embedding, sometimes mine will here and sometimes not. Cleaning the cache and/or closing then re-opening the browser tend to help.

Can one change Missing Person threads to recovered/alive/no longer missing or similar? I was looking at this thread:
NY NY - Alice Hennesey, 7, & Julia Willan, 3, The Tombs prison, 1879 - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community
I've located the two children mentioned in a census record several months after the article that named them missing, and one of the children alive in her 20s.

Please contact the moderators in the Missing area when a status has changed. There are certain criteria that must be met before changing the title status in these areas.

Thank you!

I have a question for the mods. It seems as though HLN is going to cover the Trayvon Martin case LIVE when it starts. Are we going to be allowed to discuss this case when the trial begins?

When I make a post on a fast moving thread (or come back hours later) is there a way to see any/all responses to that particular post without wading through every post on a lot of pages?
Thank you!

Yes, we've been discussing that behind the scenes. Stay posted!

Not at this time. We are moving toward an upgrade to our system and after that, we might be able to add a modification that will allow this function.

Thank you for the answer Kimster! That would be a great function to add when you upgrade!

Change of email

Hello! I haven't been on Websleuths much since the Casey Anthony Trial and recently only lurked at times for the Jodi Arias trial. I realized that my email I have is my old address and I have since switched, but it's a Gmail address. As you can see, I've obviously been away TOO long because I wasn't sure where to post this to get some help? Could someone pleeease help me? It would be much much appreciated!

Sometimes, when traffic goes WAY up because of happenings in cases or popular trials, we are asked to not refresh because it slows down the site, which doesn't allow some folks to be able to log in. What I don't understand is how to read the forum if I can't refresh the page? Isn't that no different than going to a different page (like -- go to pg 2 and then back to 1)? How do people read new posts? And if people can't read new posts, what is the point of looking at the forum or posting to it in the first place? Is there something I'm not understanding?

I hear what you are saying and I completely understand. The idea is based on changing your settings to 100, and then you can read more posts at one time. Then we aren't changing pages as often - we hope. But if one is waiting to read a post about breaking news, everyone is going to refresh often anyway.

The good news is that management is working behind the scenes to repair this problem and it will be a mute point. This was just a suggestion for the situation today. As soon as improvements have been made, everyone will know.

Ah, changing the page settings to 100 would keep the need for refreshings down. I get it!

But not "Don't refresh at all," right? There might need to be a fuller explanation down in the Arias forum because some folks are as confused as I was. I bet the critical mass will be reached again on Wednesday when court reconvenes!

At some point, you have to refresh.

Keeping it to a minimum is the key.
