It has been 200 days since Madeleine McCann vanished without trace from ‘The Beach of Light’ in Portugal and although it has dominated the headlines, Madeleine is unmentionable, except in terms of abduction. One day the child is alive, the next she is dead, but then she is ‘sighted’ with a scruffy Arab woman in Morocco, she is a victim of the Russian Mafia, she is in the care of a kindly couple or she is a rich Arab woman’s maid, but the suggestion that Madeleine may have died at the hands of the official suspects, is met with outrage.

In media circles it is sacrilege to criticise or satirise the arguidos, Kate and Gerry McCann. Journalists are queuing up to sing their praises. Allison Pearson believes “the allegation is not just revolting. It is surreal.” Bel Mooney says it due to cultural differences and ‘emotional Mediterranean types’ misunderstand the British “stiff upper lip.” Mooney and Paul Routledge both ask, “How many of us have - but for the grace of God - been there?” Very few, most responsible parents take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of vulnerable children.

Tony Parsons scraped the bottom of the barrel with a xenophobic slur on the Portuguese “sardine-munching” Ambassador and the whole police investigation is considered ‘a smear.’ Any facts surrounding the case are reported as “vile attacks” such as the fact that they left their children alone for three hours every night. Something the McCann’s don’t deny; but it’s not just the press who fete them, eight former top cops have come forward to demolish the circumstantial evidence and declare the parents innocent. Not least, Lord John Stevens.

Retired Police Commissioner Stevens instinctively agreed with his friend Professor David Canter about Madeleine's disappearance, when he concluded: “I feel abduction is the most likely possibility.” Stevens added, “In other words, the McCann’s were not involved.” Also going by instinct, John Stalker doesn’t believe for one minute they are guilty and says, “All the criticism of Kate and Gerry and their friends has been completely out of order.” The McCann’s legal team are now advising the prosecutor, “not to go any further” with the case.

Possible forensic evidence has been dismissed out of hand by these high ranking officers and progress by the Polícia Judiciária is being hampered by bureaucracy. The McCann’s enlisted the Control Risk Group including ex-SAS to discover Madeleine’s whereabouts and involved a Spanish detective agency, but they throw up false leads and the featureless kidnapper still evades detection. Meanwhile, Kate looks for Madeleine while jogging and Gerry searches on the golf course, while her fund pays their mortgage.

Dr. Creepin - that's a good summary of some of the bizarre media response to this sad crime but the commentators stupidity doesn't say anything about the actual guilt or otherwise of the McCanns. Unless you consider the effort put into the smoke screen by them as evidence.

Meanwhile, Kate looks for Madeleine while jogging and Gerry searches on the golf course, while her fund pays their mortgage.

And, meanwhile, people continue to purchase wristbands, t-shirts, and posters to support the McCann's lifestyle.

Just interested what you mean by lifestyle - do you mean they are using the fund for things like holidays , cars , new clothes , regular life ?

Of course not. No one has suggested clothes or holidays. Lifestyle to me means using the fund for mortgage payments, for unnecessary trips (US). But, of course, if the funds are used to pay the mortgage, that does leave extra money for other things.

oh ok I just interpreted " Lifestyle " as meaning just that - everything to do with your life .

their web sight is quite clear about what the fund is being used for - they will soon have to return detailed accounts to companies house as they are a ltd company so we can all see what the fund is being used for in detail

If I see Gerry in the news driving a new ferrari I will let you know ;)

It would be nice and honorable that once this whole thing is cleared up and they get back in their feet, they can return the money they spent in their house mortgage at least.

Kate must be buying new clothes for all the meetings that she is having concerning missing kids. After all, she supposedly only had the holiday casual type clothes and had to buy a new outfit to go meet the Pope.

That's never going to happen. The McCanns feel entitled to use the money given to the fund, which is a debatable point.

Worth noting that enough people gave that neither one had to consider going back to work for several months, which is not the case with most parents of missing children. They must either suffer financial ruin or go back to work as best they can. Kate is lucky in that she apparently can choose not to go back to work.

If the two could keep up with everything else immediately, such as entertaining the twins, meals with friends and family, visiting places, jogging, blogging , business meetings with Pope, church, missing kids, politicians, impeccable grooming and fashion, etc. then why weren't at least one capable of working very soon? It's not like they were totally housebound unable to function from depression and mental trauma. Actually, I think it's odd that both seem to react and behave exactly alike. You'd think at least one would look horrible, act totally out of it, be angry, be hospitalized by now, etc.

...has taken a page from the McCanns' book. He has started a begging website to raise money to "pay expenses", and so that his boys "will not be homeless."

Sociopaths, whether wife-killers or child-killers, have much in common.

DP's 'beggin for money' site was closed.
Not sure why. I had a hinky feeling it was because an arrest was imminent.

Oh, good. I can't wait to see that guy behind bars. In the general population.
