Last week, the University of Minnesota’s undergraduate student government voted down a resolution to hold an annual “moment of recognition” on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, citing concerns that it might inflame anti-Muslim sentiment.

The University of Minnesota says it is moving ahead with plans to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks following an outcry over a student group’s vote against holding a moment of silence.

The announcement Wednesday, from President Eric Kaler and Dean Johnson, chairman of the Board of Regents, said the university is reaffirming its commitment “to honor and remember the victims of 9/11.”

A spokesman said the university has been receiving calls for almost a week, since it was first reported that the Minnesota Student Association, which represents undergraduates, had rejected a resolution calling for a “moment of recognition” for 9/11.

The vote prompted a backlash on social media.

“We certainly did hear from folks on this,” said Evan Lapiska, a U spokesman. “Dean Johnson and President Kaler wanted to make sure that the folks were aware that the U is committed to honoring the victims.”

This unfortunate era of intolerance on college campuses for any ideas one does not agree with, or that one could perceive as "offensive", is an outgrowth of the "safe spaces", "microaggression" movement. The Atlantic Monthly (below) has a very good article delving into this new phenomenon of intolerance for any opposing or uncomfortable ideas among college students. Very disturbing that University professors are losing their jobs over the things described in the article.

I'm interested to hear what Websleuthers think about this new phenomenon.

Normal, sane people begrudge no one who is dead a moment to be remembered.
 
Fwiw, find it difficult to understand why students at the University of Minnesota are being held responsible for commemorating 9/11. Aren't they there to learn?

If every location in the US is held responsible to uphold a remembrance of 9/11 then could understand the perceived controversy.

Does McDonald's hold a moment of silence at their US locations? Krispy Kreme? Should they?

Assume this is an attempt at race baiting - a poor one at that imo. Good luck with getting the population of the US on board that this university is wrong about this issue.

If the University has been commemorating 9/11 for 14 years, why has it suddenly become an issue ?
 
Why didn't they care enough to do this years ago? Do they have moments of recognition at any other time during the school year, like December 7th, November 11th, May 8th, or April 4th?

Theo Menon, the student group representative to MSA for the College Republicans (CRs) at UMN, introduced the resolution; MSA’s forum voted against it 36-23 (with three abstentions). The proposed resolution pointed to the university’s lack of any sort of commemoration regarding the attacks on 9/11. It then called for a campus-wide moment of recognition on every September 11 from now on.

Thanks I misread. I thought they were stopping it because of the possible backlash to the Muslims because of the tragedy in Paris.
 
I wonder if this is the same student group that got the university to stop mentioning race in a warning to students when a rape occurred on or near the campus.
 
U of M is my Alma Mater! Proud to be a graduate. MN scores at the top every year for is it the ACT or the SAT? I forget. Students there are top notch.

Even more proud of Gov Mark Dayton who is a multi millionare. From Dayton Hudson and Target family founders. A true man of compassion!

IIRC, the FBI agents who first reported messages involving getting terrorists into US flight schools in order to fly planes into buildings were assigned for field offices in Minnesota.

They were ignored....

Do they have a moment of silence for Pearl Harbor? How about the OKC bombing? Or the burning of the Branch Dividian complex?

Maybe just a moment of silence every single morning, to really set the mood for the day?
