(Reuters) - A Carnival Cruise Lines ship was stuck at port in St. Maarten on Thursday with equipment trouble, a month after another Carnival vessel was disabled by a fire that trapped thousands of passengers at sea for nearly five days.

Carnival Corp said the Carnival Dream's emergency diesel generator malfunctioned during testing on Wednesday, causing temporary disruptions overnight to elevator and toilet services...

Reports: Another troubled Carnival ship

A month after a fire crippled a Carnival ship in the Gulf of Mexico, another one of the cruise line's vessels may be experiencing its own problems.

Multiple passengers aboard the Carnival Dream have contacted CNN, telling stories of power outages and overflowing toilets, all while docked in port at Philipsburg, St. Maarten, in the eastern Caribbean.

"We are not allowed off of the boat despite the fact that we have no way to use the restrooms on board," Jonathan Evans of Reidsville, North Carolina, said in an e-mail early Thursday. "The cruise director is giving passengers very limited information and tons of empty promises. What was supposed to take a hour has turned into 7+ hours."

The Dream was scheduled to leave port around 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday...

PHILIPSBURG, ST. MAARTEN — Passengers from the Carnival Dream were heading to the airport Thursday instead of sailing home after an on board generator problem halted their trip in the latest maintenance headache for the world's largest cruise line.

The Dream was in St. Maarten on the final stop of a Caribbean cruise when the crew announced they would not be sailing home to Port Canaveral, Florida, because of a mechanical issue with a diesel generator, passengers said.

Carnival Cruise Lines said the Dream had a "technical issue," with its backup emergency diesel generator that was discovered during a test on Wednesday. A company statement said the ship did not lose power but that there were periodic interruptions to elevators and restrooms.

Carnival said all systems were functioning normally Thursday but the company had decided to make flight arrangements for the passengers to return home by air.

Then, Elation.

Then, Dream.

And now, Legend.

While those are happy names for cruise ships, some Carnival Cruise Lines passengers say their recent onboard experiences belie the names.

In yet another setback for the cruise line, the Carnival Legend is having technical difficulties that are affecting its sailing speed. It's the latest in a growing list of woes for the travel company.

The Legend was on the last leg of a seven-day Caribbean cruise that departed Tampa, Florida, on Sunday. In a month's time, three other Carnival cruise ships have reported problems...

I saw some of the passengers interviewed. Some were pretty accepting of it, saying that "these things happen," others were belligerent, obviously planning their lawsuits.

I like the people that tweeted, "how DARE they strand us on a tropical island???!!"

Life is too short. Pick the battles that you're going to let raise your blood pressure. You know everyone is going to get compensated, so what's the big deal?

Will Carnival keep its customers?

Jebb Graff isn't turned off -- yet -- by Carnival Cruise Lines' recent troubles.

Graff took a seven-day cruise last fall on the Carnival Fantasy to Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay and Nassau, Bahamas and had a wonderful time. "It was a fantastic trip," wrote Graff, a photographer in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, in an email.

"A few veteran cruisers grumbled about the age of the ship, and the decor being dated, but the service and experience was really great," he said.

Graff said he would definitely take another Carnival cruise. But he has some conditions.

"There's no question that Carnival should be seriously looking into their maintenance policies and double-checking their work to make sure their customers and crews are having the safest voyages possible," wrote Graff. "If these issues continue to go on unchecked, then I'll change my answer."

Carnival has a window of opportunity to convince customers its ships can sail without too much trouble, according to several travel agents and cruisers interviewed by CNN.com. But the company has to prove it is tackling the recent spate of mechanical issues faced by four Carnival ships, the most serious of which left more than 4,000 people stranded for days aboard the Carnival Triumph last month...

There were conflicting reports from passengers about the freedom that they were given while the ship was stranded in St. Maarten. From the article that I posted upthread: "We are not allowed off of the boat despite the fact that we have no way to use the restrooms onboard," Jonathan Evans of Reidsville, North Carolina, said in an e-mail Thursday. "The cruise director is giving passengers very limited information and tons of empty promises. What was supposed to take an hour has turned into 7-plus hours."

If this account is true, then "being stranded on a tropical island" isn't as grand as it might seem. Sure, the weather was gorgeous, and St. Maarten/St. Martin has beautiful beaches, historical sites, art galleries, shopping, dining, but being held hostage on the ship and not having access to these amenities isn't necessarily pleasant. Passengers were expected back onboard at the scheduled departure time regardless of the prolonged stay in port.
 
All these breakdowns speak to poor maintenance and/or no preventative maintenance of the ships.

Additionally, most cruise ships are in service practically non-stop 365 days a year. Unless a vessel is scheduled for major refurbishment or requires major mechanical repairs, the ships remain in service while the issues are addressed. Painting, varnishing, carpet/upholstery cleaning, window washing, etc. are done while the ship is in transit with passengers aboard. When a ship has to be taken out of service for an extended period of time, revenue is lost in passenger fares and onboard sales. :twocents:

Troubled Carnival ship arrives back in Tampa

Tampa, Fla. — A Carnival cruise ship that experienced technical issues with its propulsion system and canceled one stop has arrived as scheduled in Tampa, Fla.

...Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen says Legend arrived about 7 a.m. Sunday in Tampa, and passengers were off the ship by the normal debarkation time of 10:30 a.m...

...Gulliksen says Legend should depart on time Sunday afternoon for its next trip, at a slightly reduced speed and with one itinerary change. He says the ship will stop in Costa Maya, Mexico, instead of Grand Cayman because it is a closer port.

Schumer calls for cruise ship bill of rights

Sen. Charles Schumer is calling on the cruise ship industry to adopt a "bill of rights" to guarantee passengers certain protections while aboard their ships.

The New York Democrat says Sunday he'll be asking industry leaders to voluntarily adopt the guidelines which include guarantees that ships have sanitary conditions, back-up power, medical staff and other standard procedures.

Schumer's plan would also include the right to a full refund if a trip is abruptly canceled due to mechanical problems.

As long as people keep patronizing companies like this, they have no incentive to improve.

Oh you have me giggling! You know the slo-mo shots of the survivors they show in the beginning doing various survivor-like things?

They could have a shot of someone wading through sewage on the boat, someone mopping their brow with their buff because of the sweltering heat and no A/C, a couple of people at a long buffet table of food they have to eat quick because it's spoiling....
