Both air and ground searches were in progress Monday morning after Sunday efforts failed to find 26-year-old Spc. Nephi Soper. Troopers’ Helo-2, as well as a Guard helicopter, were searching for Soper as weather that grounded them for much of Sunday lifted.

Soper, assigned to the Alaska Guard’s 1-297th Reconnaissance and Surveillance Battalion, missed a 6 p.m. Friday drill formation on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson after a taxicab dropped him off for his solo trek Thursday night at the Prospect Heights trailhead on the Anchorage Hillside. His plans reportedly involved traveling north overnight, emerging near Arctic Valley Road and proceeding to JBER.

Missing soldier’s brother: He had training, enjoyed going on outdoor “adventures"

....."Nephi Soper’s family is planning to come to Anchorage in March, Noah Soper said. They have set up a account to cover their expenses on the trip. He said they will not be conducting a search for him themselves, “as we might be the ones looking for rescue as well.” The Sopers will instead be collecting his personal belongings from his home and putting them in storage for the time being.

“We’re all very worried, and we know it will be hard to go see where he lives and see all of his stuff with no trace of him,” Noah Soper explained. “Very hard. It is a very traumatic time in our lives.”.....

"The search was suspended because of the lack of resources, they already exhausted everything," Nephi's brother, Noah, said. "Pretty much every government agency that you can think of has been involved in it."

Darlene Soper, Nephi's grandmother, says Nephi had a gun and a large back pack, and they know what he bought before he left, so it might give them some leads.

"He stopped at the convenience store there, when they interviewed the clerk, he said Nephi had bought a few things there, and they knew what articles he bought, and they told other hikers in the area that if you spot any trash to pick it up," said Darlene.

She says the search is suspended until new clues are found, but believes he can fend for himself and survive a long period of time on his own.

Nephi's family believes he`s probably still alive, and is asking everyone for prayers.
