Deaths of Male College Students-General Discussion #6

Posting advance notice to readers that the parents of Matthew Ward and of Joshua Swalls will each be giving Killing Killers in depth interviews in early December concerning their sons' disappearances and drownings in Indiana this past October and November.

This will hopefully shed additional light on these suspicious deaths, as well as to call more public attention to the young mens' cases so police will feel compelled to continue to investigate them.

The first interview, regarding Matt, is scheduled to go live here in the opening days of December, followed shortly thereafter by Joshua's. Photos will accompany.

Here is part of that interview with Walton Matthew Ward's mother. He had a blind date set up from cupid.com but the date never showed....apparently Matthew had mentioned a few things about this girl and one thing that struck his mom as strange was that the girl had told her son she had a women's wrestling scholarship from Indiana. The mother looked into that and found there were NO women's wrestling scholarships of any kind there. And he made a one second 911 call that was terminated soon before he "accidentally" drowned in 3 FEET OF WATER!!!!!

cut & pasted:

Q#28: Who first discovered the cell data concerning the emergency phone call, and how did detectives react when they learned that Matt had dialed 911 only minutes before he went missing?
“The missing person detective had the phone records pulled, so we knew very early he had dialed 911. Their answer was it was probably a misdial, no worries.”
Q#29: Was the 911 call the last one Matt made, and who else had he chatted with or attempted to notify in the course of that entire evening?
“Yes, the 911 call was the last outgoing call I am aware of. I can now pick the phone up at IMPD, not sure what good it will do now. They have been messing with it for weeks. Who knows what they have done.”
Q#30: Throughout law enforcement’s handling of your son’s disappearance and drowning, do you feel they have been 100% helpful and forthright?
“NO, and I [take issue] with their incompetence. [The answer below is from Matthew’s father, my ex-husband.]”
“The answer is absolutely NO. The IMPD effort has been very frustrating and unresponsive during the entire process from the initial missing report to this moment! IMPD initially filed the necessary electronic missing person report but took no action to investigate the case. It appears they chose to manage the case from behind their desk and did not take any proactive action. My ex-wife assumed the investigative responsibility by going to various bars in the Broad Ripple area interviewing bar managers, security personnel, bartenders and employees. She established locations, timelines, videos, and contact names who had met my son that night. She obtained mobile phone and computer data to help trace leads. She had posters with a picture made, posted and distributed. She contacted the media and conducted multiple TV interviews to increase awareness. All pertinent information was given to IMPD for follow up. IMPD was lethargic with the follow up appearing to hope my son would magically appear. The one consistent response we got from IMPD was how very busy and overworked the detectives were with each handling approximately 30+ cases.
“Not until the body was recovered and positively identified 11 days later (Oct 23) in the White River did any real follow up take place. The response was still very slow taking weeks to make contacts, conduct interviews, search the area and gather facts. To this date (Dec 5) many questions remain without answers. We had provided a specific list of open issues . Yet IMPD has classified his death as accidental due to drowning, stating it appears my son accidently fell into the canal. It is very suspicious and illogical that a very healthy and strongly trained 23-year-old athlete ‘fell’ and drown in three feet of water on his own.
Q#31: What is the current status of the police investigation into Matt’s death, and have you received the final autopsy and toxicology reports yet? If so, can you share any or all of these findings with the public?
“As it stands right now it will be accidental. They found ‘no defensive wounds’ or head injuries. I do not think they could tell too much about scratches after nine days in the water. However when pressed, they indicated ‘no trauma’ whatsoever.”
Interviewer's note: There were three very different Blood/Alcohol findings (BAC) in this case, depending on the organ tested. These were: 0.132 in the eye, 0.28 in the heart, and 0.4 in the urine. Police told Julie Kvinge they “don’t know what this means.” Making the final BAC determination even more murky is the fact that alcohol is naturally produced in all dead bodies during decomposition and especially elevated in those that have been submerged.
Q#32: Do you believe your son really drowned, or do you think he was murdered?
“My son was murdered, and I will spend the rest of my life looking for who did this cowardly act to my son. I know this group or whatever they are have gotten away with this over and over. I believe from what I know their time is coming to an end very soon.” Julie Kvinge, mother
“I believe he was murdered on the basis of: 1) a 911 mobile call being placed at 1:40 am and terminated within one second 2) his cell phone was found two weeks later in workable condition on the bank of the canal (normally would be in his pocket) 3) he was in excellent physical condition capable of getting out of three feet of water and, 4) he was visiting from California and was not familiar with the area and accessible paths to the canal. My conclusion: Someone (probably more than one) was with him and knows what happened.” –Walt Ward, father

Read the whole interview here. His mother shared many details. IMO,there is someone or a group of people that are targeting these young men. I believe that are doing their research on these men beforehand...whether it is through facebook or dating sites such as cupid.com. Maybe some of them are accidents but cases like Walton Matthew Ward's really strike me as odd.

My God what a set up!

We don't even know if he was meeting an actual female. A male could masquerade as a female online.

How sad. Drowned on his own in three feet of water....my behind.

Do not buy into the no foul play thing!!! My nephew was jumped, beaten, and left for dead in the canal near there. He was allowed to make one last call to tell someone to never quit looking for him as he was told by the three or four people who jumped him that he was going to die that night. Fortunately, that time, they failed! Don't stop pressing the issue!!!!

Hmmm....

These drowning cases of male college students with similar physical height and weight, etc. both enfuriates me and intugues me...

I have followed on WS some cases that fit these parameters... And am interested to learn more about research regarding this mystery.

Me too!

Do you think that the death of Jonathan Dailey may fit in? He was college age living in Boston. He left his apt at night. They found him a week later chained to cinder blocks in the river. ME is still determining if foul play was involved.

Sad similarities in these cases:

Nick Wilcox (missing since 1/1/13)
Prescott Wright and Zachary Wells (missing since 12/20/12)

I visited the one website tagged a few years ago. Is there a database- like spreadsheet- that lists names, ages, locations, last seen at, times, dates, regular drinker, etc? I did a google search and there are many men the the past year alone that aren't on here or the other website. Thanks in advance for any help.

I haven't run across any but I can google and find out.

I wonder if the director,Andrew Fitzgerald, had worked (or consulted) with some of the victim's families on this documentary. From what I can gather, from the clips I've seen,it seems he feels victims are being waterboarded and held captive for a period of time. On the imbd website it says the budget was an estimated $40,000.

Also, Charlie Geurts, missing on January 15 2013 and found "drowned" in Wisconsin's Lake Monona in the city of Madison on April 17, 2013. This case was ongoing @ the same time as Nick Wilcox was still considered "missing".
There is a page dedicated to these crimes not sure if it is allowed here or if anyone has linked it yet, but I will attempt to here. It has a lot of information about many, many of these cases.
If it is not allowed, MoDs please remove accordingly.

Same scenario over and over with a similar victim. It makes me wonder if intelligence is being gathered on the victims. I really want to see that documentary. What do the film makers know that the general public does not? Why do they think water boarding is involved? Have they been collaborating with victim's families on this documentary?

Have been reading up on the cases here for quite some time.

I strongly feel that many (not all) of these cases are connected. WAY to coincidental and I do not at all buy that so many of these guys just happened to stumble into a body of water (sometimes miles from where they were last seen....not all of them vanished "near" water). Someone or a group of someones is getting away with murder; unfortunately with the help of various LE who are quick to rule these deaths suicides or accidents.

Why has this thread seem to go so quiet?

After reading through the threads of cases such as Brian Shaffer, Jesse Ross, Joshua Guimond and then the COUNTLESS male college students who just conveniently happen to share the same overall physical characteristics who have gone missing from bars or college campuses only to be found days or months later in a body of water, this is certainly one of the most intriguing and baffling unsolved crime cases of the last decade. And YES, I do consider MANY of these young men to have died as a result of foul play. Certainly a few were accidental, but there are just TOO many similarities in location, circumstances, etc... for many of these cases just for them to be accidental.

I am very intrigued by the connections between many of the victims; particularly the ones in WI, IA, and MN. Please explain how it is just a coincidence that there victims who were linked by family/friends/school/location just happened to die "accidentally" the same way? And many victims have disappeared from the exact same location.

The Iowa connection is intriguing to me because I grew up in Iowa and attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Talk about a party college town! Drinking galore happens there. And it just so happens that the Iowa River runs right through downtown Iowa City and campus. I have not once heard of any drunk guy accidentally falling into the river. Yes, it happens, but to happen MULTIPLE times in ONE small city and all be ruled accidents (looking at you, LaCrosse) is absurd. I also find it interesting that a potential victim in Maine had the last name of LaCrosse. Hmmmmmmm. I know other "word" connections have been made.

I have read through all the threads here and many times wanted to jump in, only to realize I would be responded to something posted years ago.

I wish this case would reignite some attention. Though it doesn't seem to be happening as frequently as it did during is seeming peak of 2005-2009, it seems to occasionally still be happening.

Again, some of these drownings are accidents, no doubt. But not all of them. No way. Something or someone more sinister is at play and it is a shame that LE has not taken this more seriously. I seriously try to ponder the motive, but it is baffling.

I think that many of the victims were actually drowned before being placed into the rivers/lakes or were drowned at the edge of some of them. I remember reading something several threads back about a method of drowning where the killer lays the victim in a body of water and then lifts their legs, submerging them. This would leave them very helpless with nothing to do by flail their arms, ultimately leading them to drown with very little signs of trauma or a struggle. I also think many of the young men were kept alive for various periods of time before being murdered and, of course, some have still never been found.

I'd definitely like to discuss this case further, so hopefully someone jumps in. Been quiet for too long.

Saturday night, 8-30-2014, PM EDT, Fox News Channel will air a special hosted by Greta van Susteren on the La Crosse drownings which many believe are tied to the "smiley faced killers".

This caught my eye tonight...same song...second verse:

Body of missing Pa. college student Shane Montgomery recovered

Search teams from the Garden State Underwater Recovery Unit pulled Shane Montgomery’s body from the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia around noon Saturday, Fox 29 reported.

~Snip~

Shane, a 21-year-old senior at West Chester, had been out with friends until the early-morning hours of Thanksgiving and never made it home. His mother has said he was escorted out of Kildare's Irish Pub in the city's lively Manayunk neighborhood around 2 a.m.

~Snip~

Fox 29 said the biggest break came two weeks ago when investigators found Shane’s car keys near the river.

~Snip~

Surveillance video showed him heading towards a parking lot along the banks of the icy river.

“This is the last place we know he came,” Philadelphia Detective Capt. James Kelly told the station. “Nobody else followed him. He walked into the parking lot. If he came back here, there’s a lot of different ways he could have gone that wouldn’t have been picked up by a camera.
