STOCKTON -- On the brink of trial for the torture of a 16-year-old boy, three of the four suspects in a Tracy torture case have accepted plea deals.
In San Joaquin County Superior Court this morning, Caren Ramirez, 45, the guardian of the battered boy -- known in court documents as Kyle R. -- accepted a deal that will give her 34 years in prison. Kelly Lau, 32, will receive 33 years and her husband, Michael Schumacher, 36, accepted a deal that will give him 30 years.
The Tennis Lane neighbor of Lau and Schumacher, Anthony Waiters, 31, who faces the same charges, was not part of the deal. more at link: http://www.contracostatimes.com/top-stories/ci_16288578

Wow. I'm actually impressed at the amount of time they got considering it was a plea deal. Normally with a plea we see really short sentences.

Thank you for this update. I often think about Kyle and I'm glad to see these will be behind bars for a long time. Hopefully they will get a regular "reminder" from other inmates, that they are the scum of the universe, the lowest of low, the sort of human trash that everyone despises and if I had my way put I would throw them all in a big hole in the middle of nowhere and leave them to rot. Rant over.

STOCKTON, Calif. -- Testimony and evidence is being presented today in the trial of one of the men accused of torturing a teenager and holding him captive for months inside a Tracy home.

Thursday was the second day of trial for Anthony Waiters. Three other co-defendants pleaded guilty earlier this month.

Waiters is charged with torture, false imprisonment and child cruelty.

Prosecutors showed pictures of the teenage victim Thursday, and crime scene investigation technicians unveiled more photos of the boy while he was in the emergency room of a Tracy hospital.

Pictures showed that his ankle, which was shackled, had deep scars and open wounds. He also suffered a long cut to his back and numerous scrapes and bruises.

Waiters, according to Hayes, used his fists, lighting fluid and a knife to participate in the abuse that lasted more than a year.

Prayers for Kyle that he holds up strong to face this monster in court...I hope Waiters doesn't see the free world for decades to come.

STOCKTON, CA - The teenager, who escaped from a Tracy home where he was shackled and beaten for nearly a year, faced one of his alleged tormentors Friday as he took the witness stand.

Kyle, 18, was the first witness in the trial against Anthony Waiters, one of the four adults accused of torturing the teen and providing some of the weapons used against him, including an aluminum bat.

According to Kyle, the adults would not only use a belt and a mallet in their beatings, they would also heat up the bat in a fireplace and then hit him with it.

The other three adults charged in the case, Caren Ramirez, Kelly Lau and Michael Schumacher, face at least 30 years in prison after accepting a deal with prosecutors and pleading guilty.

During his testimony that started at 9 a.m., Kyle, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 250 pounds, said the four adults referred to him as a problem child. The beatings started because Ramirez, his former caretaker, blamed him for her debts, says Kyle.

"Kyle, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 250 pounds..."

Good for Kyle! It sounds like he's pretty healthy these days!

I knew Kyle was a tall boy but he has filled out. I'm sure he's a young man who relishes his food. He probably never takes it for granted. Does anyone remember how much he weighed when he escaped?

GOD BLESS KYLE :praying:

How long did they get and are they throwing away the key?

""They were all just laughing at me because I was trying to put the fire out," said Ramirez, then about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 100 pounds.

The teen, now 6 feet 2 inches and 250 pounds, recounted other acts of cruelty, alleging Waiters once got a knife from the kitchen and cut his arm while Ramirez and Lau held him down."

Thank you. Amazing what happens when a boy is allowed to eat and is learning to love himself. He's still so young, though, and needs a tremendous amount of love and support. It's going to be a long haul. He does look great, though. I'll bet the first responders really relish seeing that photo.

What a brave young man.

Teen testifies about abuse at Calif. torture trial

STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) — A teenage boy who stumbled into a Northern California health club nearly two years ago almost naked with a chain shackled to his ankle testified Friday that a neighbor cut him with a knife, lit his pants on fire and beat him unconscious with a boxing glove.

In his first public appearance since his escape, Kyle Ramirez, 18, took the witness stand and vividly described the abuses he said he suffered at the hands of defendant Anthony Waiters and others while being held captive in 2008.

They "would just hit me. My back, my head. Basically everywhere," Ramirez testified.

Stunned jurors shook their heads as the teen gave his horrific testimony in San Joaquin County Superior Court.

Waiters, 31, is one of four people accused of torturing Ramirez and holding him captive in a Tracy, Calif., home. Waiters has pleaded not guilty to aggravated mayhem, torture, kidnapping and false imprisonment involving the teen.

Michael Schumacher, his wife Kelly Layne Lau and the teen's then-legal guardian Caren Ramirez have pleaded guilty to charges that included use of a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury to a child. They could face at least 30 years in prison when sentenced Dec. 6.

During questioning by prosecutor Angela Hayes, Kyle Ramirez testified that Waiters beat and burned him shortly before Thanksgiving 2008.

"They were all just laughing at me because I was trying to put the fire out," said Ramirez, then about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 100 pounds.

Thank you for this story and PICTURE! Kyle is so brave - and so big! 6'2" and 250! I doubt any of those freaks would dare to try to hurt him now!

We should put this on Kyle's thread....

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The defense and prosecution made their final arguments to jurors in the trial of a man accused of torturing a teen boy in a Tracy home for more than a year.

San Joaquin County Deputy District Attorney Angela Hayes shows pictures of the victim, then 16, huddled on a hospital bed with a lock and chain around his ankle, reminding jurors that Anthony Waiters is charged with beating, burning and torturing the teen boy.

Defense attorney Alan Jose attacked the victim’s testimony in his final plea, saying the victim’s testimony was inconsistent and arguing there’s no physical evidence linking Waiters to the crimes

STOCKTON - Before deciding the future of a man accused of torturing a teen chained in a Tracy home, jurors heard two tales in closing arguments that began Wednesday.

The teen identified as Kyle Ramirez, now 18, is a reliable source whose tales of beatings are consistent with medical evaluations and evidence collected, according to the prosecution.

But the defense cites inconsistencies in the stories the teen told police and portrayed him as a young man with the potential to exaggerate or lie.
Closing arguments are expected to continue today. After they are complete, jurors will begin deliberating on the fate of 31-year-old Anthony Waiters, charged with torture, aggravated mayhem, false imprisonment, corporal punishment to a child, and a number of other charges.

STOCKTON - Jurors on Thursday began deliberating the fate of Anthony Waiters, a Tracy man charged with torturing a 16-year-old boy held captive in a home next door to his for more than a year.

Now 18, Kyle Ramirez escaped from the Tennis Lane home on Dec. 1, 2008, wearing only boxer shorts and a shackle around one ankle. He was emaciated, cut, burned and covered in soot from the fireplace where he slept.

If Waiters is convicted of all the charges, the 31-year-old could spend the rest of his life in state prison. He's accused of torture, aggravated mayhem, false imprisonment and other charges.

The five-week trial reached a climax when Ramirez took the witness stand and pointed to Waiters. He said the defendant cut and beat him and took part in abuse with three others. Waiters lived next door with his mother
