Ex-Notre Dame honor student pleads guilty to killing father

Mike Martindale /The Detroit News

Pontiac — A former University of Notre Dame honor student has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to second-degree murder in the July 27, 2012 death of his father.

Under a plea and sentencing agreement Patrick Mikes Jr., 21, of Troy, will go to prison for 12 to 20 years and receive much-needed mental health treatment, his attorney, Christopher Andreoff said.

Mikes was originally charged with open murder and facing a possible life sentence in the slaying of his father, Patrick Joseph Mikes Sr., 55, whose body was found dumped in a Genesee County cornfield.

Mikes Jr. remains in the Oakland County Jail and will be sentenced Sept.10 by Oakland Circuit Judge James M. Alexander, who accepted the plea on Tuesday. Under the agreement, Mikes could be considered for parole within his minimum sentence of 12 years, Andreoff said. He will also receive credit for the 13 months he has spent in jail...

:bump:

Patrick Mikes, Jr. will be sentenced today for the murder of his father, Patrick Mikes, Sr. I will post update when it's available.

The neighbor seeing Mike Sr. leave on the bike keeps making me think. I keep thinking of the possibility that Mike Jr. dressed in his father's clothes, put on his dad's bike helmet and some other "obvious" gear (sorry.. not up on biking gear).. and left the house on the bike.. ditching it somewhere.

The two men are different body types, not to mention age difference and the son has a full beard Sorry, not buying that. The neighbor was mistaken and the younger son had probably been threatened by his older brother (or was also mistaken).
