Thomas case: 3rd Fullerton officer charged

SANTA ANA – Ex-Fullerton policeman Joe Wolfe, the first officer to land a blow on mentally ill transient Kelly Thomas during the July 2011 melee that led to Thomas' death, has been indicted by the Orange County grand jury.
Wolfe was accused in the indictment of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of the use of excessive force, the Orange County District Attorney's Office said Thursday.

They should have charged him with the other two originally, imo. I don't know what they see now that wasn't on the video before. This DA worries me a little. jmo

I've always had a fishy feeling about Rackauckas. He was far too lenient on Cicinelli, and gave Ramos the brunt of the charges. Seems skewed to me.

Testimony got underway Tuesday in the trial of two former Fullerton police officers charged in the death of a mentally ill homeless man.

Ramos and Cicinelli are charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of 37-year-old Kelly Thomas, who died five days after an altercation with police outside a Fullerton transit center in July 2011. Ramos faces an additional charge of second-degree murder and Cicinelli an additional count of using excessive force.

Prosecutor: Fatal beating followed police threat

ANTA ANA, Calif. — A bloody beating by police that left a California homeless man dead began when one of the officers on trial in his death grew frustrated with his evasiveness, snapped on a pair of latex gloves and told him, “’See these fists? They’re getting ready to (expletive) you up,’” a prosecutor said Monday.

Kelly Thomas Trial: Prosecutors set to call more witnesses Monday

The trial resumes Monday in a Santa Ana courtroom for two former Fullerton police officers charged in the July 5, 2011, death of a homeless, mentally ill man.

Manuel Ramos, 39, is charged with second degree murder and involuntary manslaughter; and Jay Cicinelli , 41, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and use of excessive force in the death of Kelly Thomas, 37.

Orange County prosecutors are expected to call more witnesses Monday in the fifth day of the trial.

Attorneys for two former Fullerton police officers charged in the death of a mentally ill, homeless man launched their case in defense of the men this morning in a Santa Ana courtroom.

The attorneys for Manuel Ramos, 39, and Jay Cicinelli, 41, called Thomas' grandfather, Walter Dieball, as their first witness. Dieball is expected to testify about a 1995 incident in which Thomas struck Dieball with a metal fireplace poker.
