Found Deceased IN - Mitchell O'Banion, 17 mos, Whitewater River, 1 June 2011

who takes a little baby in a kayak? kayaks are tippy and prone to rolling.

I think that one of them should have stayed in the area, instead of BOTH going for help.

Lots of good questions in the comment section of that first article. Besides the obvious one (who takes a baby, without a secure flotation device, kayaking in a flooded river???), inquiring minds want to know if anyone saw them *with the baby* while launching the kayak. When's the last time anyone besides the parents saw the baby?

It's terrible to be so jaded, but we see this time and time again....

Or if anyone saw them *with the baby* when they rented the Kayak..

Why would the parents take a 17 month old kayaking? Kayaks are completely unstable. I understand being on a boat but NOT a kayak. Bad parenting in my opinion. Praying for this poor child.

I see Sophieness beat me to it.

Approximately 50 people are assisting with the search along with experienced kayakers working along the shoreline.

Emergency officials are considering this incident a tragic accident.

The search area set for Friday is about 24 miles long.

Catron said there was no date set to call off the search.

Although the river level has gone down some, the current remains swift, officials said. With such conditions, Catron said, divers will only enter the water if there is a high confidence that something will be found.

On Thursday, a camera was found and Catron said officials are trying to determine if it belongs to the family.

This is heartbreaking. So many little kids lost to preventable things lately. I hope for a miracle.

I do feel for these parents but I have one word to say <modsnip>. I can not beleive they took a 17mth old in a kayak on a flooded river and didnt put his life jacket on properly.

If you look in the comments of the first news link posted above, a lady who has a child with the father of the baby missing, says they bought the kayak as the love the outdoors and went last week and took her son as well....she says they are easygoing people and dont think of the bad that can happen......

I am sorry but this one has made me angry as well.....

Crews to search 24-mile river stretch for boy

Division of Watercraft workers started Friday at the Ohio River and are moving upstream in search of the 17-month-old boy who went missing after his family's kayak capsized on the Whitewater River on Wednesday.

The search area set for Friday is about 24 miles long. This is the third day for the child believed to be named Mitchell O'Banion of Independence. Multiple agencies have joined forces for the search and recovery effort.

Officials say the toddler's parents, Carmen Sickmeier, 34, and Lawrence J. O'Banion II, went into the river with the help of Morgan's Outdoor Adventure
at Blue Creek Road and made it to a spot about 4 ½ miles downstream before their kayak overturned as they tried to avoid a large branch in the river. The couple told officials that their child's life jacket may have been fastened incorrectly.

Some 50 people have been searching for the toddler from daybreak to sundown everyday. The kayak and the toddler's life jacket were recovered Wednesday evening. "We cannot eliminate any stretch at this point," said Gary Catron, of the Indian Conservation Office.

I have two comments here:

1. Morgan's Outdoor Adventures assisted the family in entering the river. Did they not notice that there was a baby, or say something like 'the river is high, dangerous; what about the baby"? Did the person who assisted them actually see the baby, see the child-size lifejacket?

2. The river was so high it was dangerous for professional divers, but not for a 17-month-old??

http://www.wlwt.com/r/28115666/detail.html The family is from Independence and Mitchell is one of four children.

Okay, this is really bothering me. There are three other children in this family? At least two of them would have to be older than Mitchell. Why was only 17-month old Mitchell taken on the kayak trip?

This is crazy.....my husband used to kayak and its extremely dangerous. Much more dangerous than being in a tube boat or anything like that. Definitely not a sport for a small child, much less a baby.
Its so heart breaking....why did this happen?

Here is the website for Morgan's Outdoor Adventures

I also found a PDF of their release form:

I wonder if the parents had to sign a form like this?
This story really makes me angry and sad.

Hmm, no age limits. Children have to be a certain height to board rollercoasters at Six Flags, but not kayaks on a rain swollen river?
