Family of Linnea Lomax seeks answers after tragic news
The day after Linnea Lomax's decomposed body was found along the American River following a 10 week search, her large extended family waited to learn how and why she died - and how her tragic end might help others.
Lomax, 19, had gone from a joyful, outgoing El Dorado High School student with a 4.1 GPA to a stressed, depressed U.C. Davis freshman contemplating suicide.

Linnea Lomax's body found near American River
A UC Davis student, who has been missing since late June, was found dead Friday morning.
Linnea Lomax, 19, was last seen on June 26 leaving an outpatient treatment facility on Howe Avenue.
Volunteers helping the Lomax family look for Linnea came across the decomposing remains in a riparian area of the American River in Glenn Hall Park, near Sacramento State, around 10:18 a.m.

UC Davis student remembered by friends
Friends of a missing UC Davis student gathered to reflect on her death after remains were discovered by searchers Friday.
The body of 19 Year Old Linnea Lomax was found near the American River in East Sacramento.
Lomax was well known for being heavily involved in her College Life Christian Fellowship group. Members of the group got together at a home in Dixon to pray and talk about what happened.

Linnea Lomax, the 19-year-old UC Davis student found dead last week along the American River, hanged herself, her father said today.
Craig Lomax made the disclosure during a press conference in Placerville called to thank the volunteers who had spent months searching for Lomax, who disappeared 10 weeks ago after leaving a psychiatric hospital.

Mother tells how she found Linnea Lomax hanging by river; parents thank searchers
Thrashing through the thick brush on the banks of the American River on Friday morning, Marianne Lomax got on her hands and knees, crawled through the bramble and came to what she called a "pretty place" alongside the water.
There, she found her 19-year-old daughter Linnea, hanging from a tree.
"I looked for two seconds and I knew it was her," recalled Marianne Lomax, wrapped in a prayer shawl and standing alongside her husband, Craig. "I believe God brought me to her, and there's closure because of that."

Reporter's Notebook: Cristina Mendonsa on Mental Illness in Young Adults
The thought was always to respect the family and that a suicide was more of a tragic personal event than a crime that needed media scrutiny. We covered Linnea Lomax's disappearance extensively when we were unsure of the circumstances but the coverage was curtailed once her body was found and we confirmed it was a suicide. I couldn't stop wondering about this young woman who smiled at us from pictures, had a loving family and a seemingly bright future. I wondered about the months leading up to her suicide and wondered about the role mental illness might've played.

I requested an interview with the Lomax family because I hoped there would be lessons from Linnea that could help others. They are a lovely family who loved and supported Linnea, they are intensely proud of her and her mental decline hit them by surprise.
