The house listing makes me even more sad. Something was really wrong for them to leave that place and their kids. I know it's none of my business, but I will forever be haunted by this until I know why this happened.

A memorial service has been scheduled for Sunday for the Cargiles in Black Mountain at the St James Episcopal Church at 4 PM. There is a good article in today's Asheville Citizen-Times here:

"The private lab doing the toxicology reports had not yet finished one for William Cargile because his body was more decomposed, Pustilnik said. Medical examiners had said he died first, but this week Pustilnik offered more specifics saying the difference “was probably a couple of days” before Leslie Cargile’s death."

If Allen died a couple of days earlier, doesn't this suggest murder suicide?
I am surprised that they are just closing the case.
Something does not add up.

Not necessarily murder-suicide, because if he ingested his dose himself, it's suicide. Since most of it sounds like oral medication, it would be extremely difficult to force him to take that much medication.

I think perhaps he took his, asked her to make sure he was dead, and then she was to take hers.

I wonder if she was having second thoughts and that's why such a difference in time between his and her deaths.

Something occurred to me today - what's sad is if she did have second thoughts she may have just gone through with it so she wouldn't have to explain why she was in a room with a dead person for a day or two.

There is an excellent article in the London Daily Mail about the Cargiles. Interestingly, it is where I first read about the story. See here:

Wow, they were living large, that is for sure. I wonder what he did for a living. I know doctors make a lot of money, but that house is huge.

Thank you vytiense. At least the article does touch on what we were thinking. Financial issues....and their consequences. At least that is stated in the article. I'm so happy that they at least left notes to their two kids...and someone who lived in their home with them (?).

It is also interesting that they made reservations in Laredo, but ended up staying in Galveston....

The very sad part of the article is the the "Do not Disturb until noon on Thursday"

So sad, we will probably not know the extent of the financial problem...as it isn't our business anyway...but it was obviously something they thought was big enough to not want to be here to deal with it.

Well, that just makes me sad. I've always had the feeling there was some kind of financial house of cards getting ready to come down and they made an exit when they knew it was about to happen.

I hope the medical office wasn't being investigated for Medicaid/Medicare fraud. I don't remember it being mentioned when the office re-opened.

It definitely sounds like they were going to Mexico (Laredo), but it also sounds as if the suicides were completely planned. They left notes at the scene, it says in that Blue Ridge Now article.

I don't know that there was a big financial scandal or just no way to live well through retirement since nothing has come out and provisions were made for so much.

Hmmm, why go to Mexico to commit suicide when it looked as if they were running off to Mexico for financial reasons? Was the plan really to run off to Mexico and one of them had other plans? I hadn't thought that at all until this new news came out.

Maybe they decided that if one of them wouldn't do the Mexico plan, they'd both just commit suicide? What a strange story.

Lots of fairly wealthy people have fantasies of running off to Mexico to stretch their fortunes if they start to dwindle, btw. There are websites devoted to how to do it and stuff. I've heard from folks angry about different kinds of taxes who swear they'll do that someday -- just the Mexico part!

RIP. So sad and bizarre.
