Gatineau police said conducting "routine links" between the murder of Valerie Leblanc and that of Chinese murdered by the now famous Luka Rocco Magnotta.

"Nothing leads us to believe that this man is connected (the murder of Valerie Leblanc)," said Sergeant John Paul LeMay, the Gatineau police.

The only element that leads investigators to Gatineau to recheck certain aspects of the case Leblanc is the treatment of his corpse".

The mother of Valerie Leblanc believes it’s unlikely her daughter’s death has anything to do with accused killer Luka Magnotta.

Eighteen-year-old Valerie Leblanc’s burned body was found behind a Gatineau CEGEP in 2011, and her killer is still at large.

Earlier reports said Gatineau police were looking into a possible link between her death and Magnotta, who is charged with first-degree murder for killing Chinese student Jun Lin and shipping his body parts in the mail.

But Leblanc’s mother Julie Charron believes the link is tenuous at best.

“My motherly instinct tells me they aren’t linked,” she said. “This man lived in Montreal, I don’t think he ever lived in Ottawa, so it would surprise me if he was involved.”

I don't think there is a connection. The suspect in Valerie's case spoke fluent french.

She is probably right, though I think it is good the police want to make sure there is no possible link.

I just wanted to clarify that:
  • LM only lived in Montreal for the last four months, and
  • I am sure I read in one of the news articles that LM did live in Ottawa at some point in his life, IIRC, I think it was said he lived on Laurier Ave., which is in the downtown area.
Will go try and see if I can find that news article.

Editing to ad: "Although they could provide no details, Ottawa police said they believe Magnotta lived on Laurier Avenue for a time in 2006."

Bumping for Valerie Leblanc.

"When darkness falls and hides the portraits of Valerie Leblanc on the living room table, and on the nearby bookshelf, and on the photos in the study, the girl’s grandmother begins another night of restless sleep.

It is a year now since Valerie was found behind her Gatineau college, her teenaged body broken and lifeless.

A year of fruitless police inquiries.

A year of grief.

Huguette Leblanc, 68, squeezes a balled-up handkerchief in her right hand.

The French words are measured, careful.

“The people who killed her — the people who saw or heard something — the people who found and desecrated her body — the people who know who did it and don’t speak up — I ask myself how they sleep at night,” she says"

GATINEAU — Vandals have damaged a memorial to murder victim Valérie Leblanc, and police are asking for the public’s help in identifying them.

The granite plaque at the memorial behind the CEGEP de l’Outaouais at 333 Cité des Jeunes Blvd has been damaged, police said Wednesday afternoon.

A cross, a crucifix and a photo of Leblancs have also been damaged and defaced with graffiti. Empty beer cans are scattered around the area.

Police don’t know when the vandalism occurred.

Leblanc, 18, was killed in August of last year. Her body was found behind the CEGEP, at the spot where the small memorial stands now. Her body had been set on fire after her death.

The killer has not been found.

Residents who frequent Pinhey Forest trails off Slack Rd. are fed up with the area being used as a meeting point for gay men to engage in public sex.

The secluded forest that stretches across Merivale Rd. and Woodroffe Ave. has been a popular destination for men to meet for sex for years, according to Agnes Warda, Glens Community Association president.

But in recent months, the complaints have been pouring in far too frequently.

“When it started happening way too often and too openly we started feeling uneasy,” said Warda.

“Gradually, slowly, residents have been pushed away from the area (they) enjoy.”

Tracy Armstrong lives near the trail and said she stopped walking with her kids near the secluded P-15 parking lot more than 10 years ago when she noticed strange men loitering in the area"
