Yikes.

Enriqueta Martí i Ripollés, The Vampire of Barcelona (Murderpedia)
---
Enriqueta was leading a double life. During the day she dressed in rags and begged at houses of charity, convents and parishes in the destitute parts of town where she selected children who looked the most abandoned. Taking the children by the hand, she made them pass as her children. Later, she prostituted or murdered them. She did not have any need to beg since her double work as a procurer and prostitute gave her sufficient money to live well. By night she dressed in luxurious clothes, hats and wigs, and attended the El Liceu, the Casino de la Arrabassada and other places where the wealthy of Barcelona gathered. It is probable that in these places she offered her services as procurer of children.
---
At the same time as she was prostituting children, she was also practicing as a witch-doctor. The ingredients she used to make her remedies were made from the remains of the children that she was killing, who ranged from infants up to children of 9 years. From these children she used everything that she could; the fat, blood, hair, and bones (that normally she turned into powder). For this reason, she did not have problems disposing of the bodies of her victims.

lengthy (and I mean lengthy!) articles on the woman at link above; proof
that the times we live in are not unique in their ability to produce monsters

Yes, one of the very few female sexual serial killers who was the instigator of her actions. There were some that did so as followers like Hindley and Homolka or as a team like Graham and Wood.

The book, Murder Most Rare - The Female Serial Killer, lists only her and Wuornos in the Sexual Predators chapter.

I had her on my list of upcoming centennial entries.

It is heartbreaking to see pictures of these pitiful little kidnapped children that she murdered just because they lost their appeal in her pedophile brothel or to harvest body parts for various rituals.

One I had not found yet, thanks.

Haven't gotten to read more than the first few paragraphs yet, but she looks normal, in fact, pretty, was rather ingenious with the, erm, medicinal disposal. Wow.

When my daughter was young, she used to ask me about crimes. I tried to explain that they have always been and give her simple examples to help understand. Like Cowboys and Indians killing, raping, pillaging, or families murdering and burying on their farmland. Crime has always been and always will be, and it will always be disturbing and shocking.

Off to read more, not looking forward to the children's pics.

In some ways her attractive appearance makes her even more frightening, like some deadly poisonous sea creature.

I don't remember where I saw the pictures of the child victims. Is it in this article?

The crime that most resembles this one in my view is the Gonzalez sisters who did something similar in Mexico during the 1950s and 60s.

I was always vaguely fascinated as a child by notions of the Viking nemesis pushing ashore and storming the villages of my English forbears, raping, pillaging, etc., an interest that crested in my teens when Led Zeppelin released its great, Norse-specific, single, "Immigrant Song."

Also did a 180 in my view of scalping after finding out I had Native American blood; "Custer had it coming," etc. etc.

Lol at poisonous sea creature, so true though.

There are photos in the article, the photos link. :(

Not sure I've read about the Gonzalez sisters yet either, will look it up.

A bit dismayed to say that I find Enriqueta "a looker" too!

Vikings remain fascinating, no matter the age.

Ah, Led Zepplin, yeah, the helped, also liked "No Quarter."

I've always know about our Native American heritage, but oddly have never been interested in much other than Dad's knowledge of medicinal/poisonous herbs, he took that with him though. Perhaps I should learn more about Native American life now, all I know is they got taken!!

This lady was most fascinating and quite the entreperneur, not one I would want to encounter!

In Ponent's flat they found curious things: an ancient book with parchment covers, a book of notes where she had written recipes and potions in elegant calligraphy, a package of letters and notes written in coded language and a list with names of families and very important figures in Barcelona. This list was very controversial since among the population it was believed that it was the list of Enriqueta's rich clients.
Still reading my way through this. Excellent read if one likes chilling reading materials.

Oh, I had to stop reading once I saw the poor little boys name "Pepito". For reasons unknown my heart always breaks for kids named Pepito.

As for the Vikings of your childhood daydreams did ummmmm "Oden" figure in?

No, none of the mythology, just angry-looking men with shields storming ashore.

Did have a good friend who named his dog Odin. Poor thing, animal was not the brightest.

"Pepito" was the name of the hired hand on the old "The Real McCoys" show, btw.
