Trivia fact: Does anyone know that The Monkees were not originally a band? They were hired as actors for the show, much like The Partridge Family, and became a real band once the show started!

Stephen Stills tried out, as did Harry Nilsson. And hundreds of lesser-well-known others. A long-time urban legend holds that Charles Manson tried out too, but he was imprisoned at the time.

From 2010-
Part 3 of Davy Jones on The Strange Dave Show. This segment finds Davy discussing the musical legacy of The Monkees. Topics include which gold record Davy has hanging up in his house, Peter Tork's drug bust in the 1970's, Davy's refusal to retire from show business, and a surprise email from Strange Dave's wife! Davy also questions whether or not Paul McCartney, The Grass Roots, and The Beach Boys actually played their instruments on some of their original recordings. Davy refutes any possibility of a Monkees Reunion and lashes out at bands like The Moody Blues and The Who for touring in 2010 asking questions like 'how much is enough' - that it's all about money and that Davy is in a happy spot right now.

Goes a lot deeper than that. Mike was the only one who knew how to play an instrument when they started. All the music was done by musicians . When the show became a hit Davey Mickey and Peter learned to play fired a person in charge because they wanted to go on tour for their fans.

So sad. I now officially feel old. Though I never had a crush on Davy he was always my favorite. (Speed Racer, Donny Osmond and then Shaun Cassidy were my crushes) Loved watching the show as a kid, and who could forget the Brady Bunch episode he appeared in.

Sleep peacefully Davy. :rose:

I just saw it on the internet. He died of a heart attack. That's why I always say. Live it up now. You could be dead tomorrow.

Sad part about it is from what I read is . He was complaining after doing a show last night of chest pains and did not go to the hospital than. They called 911 this morning and he arrived DOA . People please heed the warning with chest pains when you get up in age. Heart attacks victims can be saved now days.

Had a manager at work basically do the same thing.

This is really sad. I didn't catch the show until about 10 years later in reruns, and I didn't really have a crush on any of them, but I sure did want to hang out with them. Daydream Believer was one of my favorite songs for a long time.
RIP Davy Jones.
