I didn't watch 20/20 but I swear that there was a photo being shown the first day that showed a body on the floor, covered in a white sheet or blanket, with dark hair sticking out. I vividly remember it because I thought it was very tasteless to be showing that picture so soon....I would put money on the fact it was shown on HLN, since thats the only news station I watch. I have tried to find it since reading this thread (not to be morbid, but because there seemed to be interest) and I can't find it doing a google search.

I will record that opening segment from the beginning of the show and eventually post it here.

Waited all that time for 20/20 and then it turns out to be non-informative. Wasn't that long. Didn't really give any details - just the basics. No mention of a bat and that picture I saw in the beginning never surfaced again.

I recorded on my DVR and just found the pic you are describing...girl lying face down, head turned to the right, white sheet/pants/skirt, black top lifted up, etc...hmmm I do wonder whether this is a staged photo or from the crime scene????

"Law enforcement confirms a murder weapon -- a baseball bat -- was found in Joran van der Sloot's hotel room along with the body of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez" - CNN

Notice it says 'a' murder weapon.... not 'the' murder weapon.

In regard to the supposed baseball bat, my 85 yr. old mother has always kept a couple around in case of burglars. Her advice is that it doesn't matter if the burglar has a gun as long as she gets the first whack in. JV could have bought it in country for protection. It's not exactly like he was staying at a five star hotel.

There is a link (don't know which one right now, but I will find it) that has a story translated into English that said there was a tennis racket found in the room. I will go find the story.
ETA...link was in thread #2

"Meanwhile, the Homicide Division has sent analyze the racquet found in the room, which would be the weapon of attack."

This is google translated. Maybe 'racquet' means (baseball) bat?

REPORTED ON 20/20 on 4 June 2010
SF's father said "she is a hero" and stated no other women will die in the hands of Joran, it will help Natalee's family. What a beautiful person he is (JMO) no mention of his grief, just all the positive things that have resulted from his daughter's death.
SF family member investigating her disappearance (not coming home for 3 days) was told she had left the Atlantic City casino with Joran. She did an Internet search and learned of Joran/Natalee case and took it to the authorities.
Joran stole her $5k winnings.

I hope Joran sits in jail and is NOT bonded out, 4 yr wait per "Krowdkat" post is fine with me, than let him be found guilty. I hope he does not get any special treatment. I also hope the officials take their time gathering evidence to prove without a doubt that this is indeed guilty.
***
In the meantime, the FBI can finalize the extortion case and he can be charged with that too!
***
Justice for Natalee, Justice for Stephany!

In the public opinion poll JVDS is a hated man. At this time he is being judged by a foreign country for their murder by their rules. We think differently and judge differently here in our country. As much as we dislike him and wish the worse we can not lose site of our ways and how we believe a person should be judged. I am an American and truly believe in the innocent until proven guilty. I do not believe in torture or inhumane treatment of prisoners. This system is going to be different. We have no say, we have no control. He is responsible for the situation he is in right now. All I can think is "God have mercy on his soul".

Greta has Mark Furman down in Peru and he said that:

* finger nail clippings are standard procedure down there
* her head may have been bashed against a corner of the wooden bed frame

LNL

Mark Fuhrman on Greta. He is in Lima.

Said...the ME said she died of blunt force trauma. No apparent rape. No baseball bat. The ME theorized that the trauma to the back of her head and neck was due to someone hitting her head on the european style wooden bed frame. The mattress was aschew at that end of the bed where her body was found on the floor.

Nothing about not having an eyeball.

LNL

The ME theorized that her head was hit on the wooden bed frame. He never mentioned a baseball bat. I think if there was a weapon like that he would have mentioned it to Mark.

I tend to believe this version vs. the stuff we are hearing from some of the other sources, especially the translated ones.

Mark Furman did not mention a bat, but he did not say that there wasn't one. He said that she had blunt force trauma to her head which the ME said was more severe than what would have happened from just falling and hitting her head on the wooden bed frame.

ETA: All above bolding and underlining by me.

Just to bump, we are getting conflicting stories of what Mark F said in this thread, so who knows.

Not calling any of you guys out, and no disrespect to the above quoted posters, but just shows how things can be interpreted differently. I appreciate the info as I couldnt watch it either. We'll know the details in time, maybe not our time, but in time. You have to imagine things are and have been happening fast and furious the last 24-48 hours. Signals get crossed.

Gosh, the old gang is back on Greta tonight. Bernie and Jim are on. Even Ted.(Ted even has gray hair now...what is left of it.)

Yay a reunion! LOL Sorry I missed it!

I thought that the US Attorney didn't have enough evidence to go after Joran May 10th or shortly thereafter. How could they have extrodited him without sufficent evidence?

They didn't have a completed case nor an indictment on the 10th AND it is not a crime that meets extradition criteria (as posted earlier in the day by another poster).

Why they are trying to blame the FBI who was clearly trying to put together a case against him and get him off the streets for this death is BEYOND me. Had they been able to lure him to a location he could be arrested they would be calling them geniuses.

We also have to keep in mind folks are translating articles via google/babelfish etc. which aren't always accurate translations. Misinformation happens often enough without the problematic language barrier. Also, IIRC Stephany's brother threw some of this information out there. It's hard to say at this juncture what is true or not. It's always like this in the beginning of cases and yes, it drives us all quite batty.

How would they know it was a "baseball bat" unless they had the actual bat? I mean - couldn't you knock apart a wooden bed and use one of the corner posts as a bat? Woudln't that be consistent with "baseball bat" wounds?

Clubs, boards, anything that you could swing and strike with. Makes me wonder why they are saying (or we're hearing) specifically "baseball bat" - unless they have one.

The picture on 20/20 showed no white sheet. Just a girl lying on her side - red shirt - long dark hair that was "spread out" so you couldn't make out any features.

Also, I thought there was no bail in Peru. Even so, I do think this case will be dealt with post haste as the international media scrum has arrived.

It sounds like there is bail, but most people can't afford it.

"Arrest and Detention

The law requires police to file a report with the Public Ministry within 24 hours after an arrest. The Public Ministry, in turn, must issue its own assessment of the legality of the police action in the arrest. Judges issue warrants based on sufficient evidence. The law also provides for the right to prompt judicial action. The time between an arrest and an appearance before a judge averaged 20 hours. Judges have 24 hours to decide whether to release a suspect or continue detention. A functioning bail system exists, but many poor defendants lacked the means to post bail. By law detainees are allowed access to a lawyer and to family members. The Ministry of Justice provided indigent persons with access to an attorney at no cost. Persons detained for espionage, drug trafficking, corruption, and terrorism may be held for up to 30 days. Police may detain suspected terrorists incommunicado for 10 days. The Public Ministry oversees the detention centers, which the ombudsman also monitored."

I'm trying (unsuccessfully at this point) to find out if Peru entertains the insanity defense. No luck so far.

One thing I did get from the Dateline show was a better translation/understanding of what her father supposed had said about Stephany sacrificing herself to bring Joran to justice.

It sounded to me that he was taking comfort in his faith, and that he believed that God took her for a reason, and that by her death there would be justice for Natalee and that no other woman would have to suffer because of Joran. I think he is trying to make sense out of this senseless brutality and it gives him comfort to think that her death will not be in vain.

Spot on IMO, what a strong, strong man.

I don't think it's conflicting. Both of us stated that the ME theorized or that the injuries may have been caused by.....

Thank you for the link, Cricket. I'm just jumping off your post.

Wonder why JeanC did not jump to release that info - bat found in room.

I did not hear Jean C., any of her guests nor her reporters in Peru state that a bat was found in the room (but I may have missed it), though she certainly repeated at least 3x that police confirmed that SR was beaten with a bat (paraphrase), and that a bat was the murder weapon. Confirmed a few times that autopsy showed COD blunt trauma to head, neck and back. Brother did as well.

I didn't hear it said that the baseball bat was found in the room either. But when I questioned it on the other thread, others assured me it was mentioned several times. :waitasec:
