FB page changed to Yashawnee Vaughn RIP We want justice.
Search is still on for Sat.
===================

http://www.katu.com/news/local/119027884.html
Police said they’ve served search warrants and collected evidence at two locations though they won’t say where those locations are. They also haven’t said how or why Yashanee was murdered.

My apologies. I fixed it.

Rest in peace, Yahanee. :rose:

Detectives said Yashanee's body had not yet been found and help from the public was still needed.

There could also be more arrests to come,
investigators said.

Vaughn was last seen waiting for a bus near a Taco Bell on NE 82nd Avenue on March 18. Detectives believes Vaugn was killed the next day.

Absolutely disgusting how both LE and media just absolutely dismissed this girl's disappearance for over a week. :banghead: How many times does this have to happen before people realize that NOT ALL TEENS RUN AWAY!!!

May she be found soon and rest in peace.

This case is extremely sad. I live less than 1/2 a mile from the taco bell & Madison high school. People have been out everyday posting flyers and talking to people at all the bus stops, max stop & businesses along 82nd. Family and friends tried hard to make up for the lack of media, I wonder if that helped break the case?

I graduated in '07 so I'm a few years older than she is but I'm going to do some searching on facebook and see what people are saying.

Prayers to her family

Such a sad, sad story!

I hate that police automatically assume runaway. It depends on which police department you are dealing with. Look at the recent case of 14 year old Isabella. The police immediately sprang into action in her case even though they also believed and had reason to believe she ran away. Yashawnee didn't tell anyone she was going to run away - so why not investigate FIRST, then determine her status? SO sad!

http://www.katu.com/news/local/119027884.html?

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested for the murder of a missing 14-year-old girl, Portland Police said Thursday.

There is also a video, in which the mother says the boy is her daughter's boyfriend.

This is truly sad, 2 children have lost their lives in different ways of course.

This is so sad. Two young lives wasted. Rest in peace baby girl.

Thanks for saying that, Lotsa. I just found out Parrish is a family member of a friend. I'm sure it is a tragedy for his family as well, and that something went horribly horribly wrong.

Peace for you, Yashawnee.
Another sad case to follow. :(

Portland police search Rocky Butte in connection with Yashawnee Vaughn case

Portland Police Sgt. Pete Simpson said searchers are on Rocky Butte today, looking for evidence connected to the killing of 14-year-old Yashawnee Vaughn.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office launched a "large scale search" of the area beginning at 9 a.m., according to Simpson.

Also from that link:

Earlier today, Teressa Raiford, a relative and friend of the missing girl's family, this morning pressed the police department to change its policy on how it reacts to reports of missing children.

"We're dealing with a minor," Raiford said. "What can we do to change the process?"

[snip]

The girl's mother, Shaquita Louis, reported her missing at 10:17 p.m. March 21, two days after Vaughn was last seen. Police did not assign two detectives to the case until Louis called police back on March 23.

I'm really getting tired of these cops that immediately want to classify every missing person as a runaway, until proven otherwise.

How many times do they need to be proven wrong, before some type of policy change is implemented?

This just makes me sick.

When they classify someone as a runaway like this, they are basically just saying that they will wait around for someone else to do their job, and find evidence that the missing child isn't a runaway.

How many more children need to die while police aren't taking the case seriously?

I have some local rumors I'd like to share with you all... My best friends sister lives in the townhomes the crime occurred. I've also over heard a few conversations while waiting/riding the bus and max 1/2 block from the taco bell she was last seen.

Sorry for the newb question, but what are the rules on this? Can I post as long as I give a clear warning it is strictly "rumor"?

TIA! Would love to share this interesting info & get your opinions.

Yes, you can post rumors. As long as you clearly lable them as rumors, and they are not outrageous.

However, this is generally done on a case-by-case basis, and if this takes off into something uncontrollable, the rules can be changed. Thank you for asking!

Another sad case to follow. :(

I just heard on the 11pm News he lived with his father. They said neither he OR his father had been seen for days.

Other new info {sorry if it is already posted here} is they dropped his charge from murder to manslaughter as the judge didn't feel there was enough evidence for murder.

At his hearing today he smiled the whole time which terribly upset Yashawnee's family. Either that was from nervous energy being in that spot and only 16 or he is a bit deranged. I didn't hear anything negative said about his personality either yesterday or today.

They are searching a heavily wooded area near the Vaughn home, Rocky Butte. A big area. Maybe another local can tell us more about the Rocky Butte area - I know I'd like to learn more about it. That would probably be a first thought area to put a body. I think he would also require help to get her there. Not sure as I haven't been to that spot.

And since LE doesn't have enough to hold a charge of murder at this time there is great hope she could still be alive. That tells me there wasn't enough blood in his bed to show death which is a very good thing.

I hope she is found alive and very soon. xox

We'll wait patiently for your return Cinderella. lol I'd love to hear what you've learned. I've often found there is a grain of sand in rumors.

Emotions are raging on social networking websites, as teens express everything from disbelief and confusion to raw pain and anger. Accustomed to posting without censoring themselves, comments are sometimes veering into dangerous territory.
Vaughn was a student at Helensview High School, a small alternative school serving around 250-270 students. Principal Kris Persson said she felt awed by the compassion and caring her students are displaying, while facing a grief quite unlike any they have known.

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2011/04/parrish_bennette_arraigned_on.html

The arraignment started about 4:30 p.m., several hours after a massive search began on nearby Rocky Butte for clues to Vaughn's disappearance and apparent death. The search continued during the arraignment and officials indicated it would go into the night and weekend.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office had launched a "large scale search" of the area beginning at 9 a.m. and by 10 a.m., patrol cars were blocking access to some roads to the summit of Rocky Butte.

Rocky Butte is a heavily wooded city park built around an extinct lava cone. Here is a link to a map that gives an idea of size and terrain:

http://www.portlandonline.com/parks/index.cfm?a=93745&c=39872

It is a popular spot for hiking and biking and there are some beautiful views from the top. I have driven into the park at night and the drive is very dark in places, not many streetlights and there are many houses that don't have much in the way of exterior lighting.

It is also home to the campuses of City Bible Church, Portland Bible College and City Christian Schools.

Media reports have mentioned that Parrish was a known 'Disciple' gang member. I wonder if this is related to his gang activity....if he had help....if he was told to do this.
FWIW, Yoshawnee is giving a sign in her FB profile pic. The sign she is giving is the Black Disciple Gang sign.

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000697683843#!/profile.php?id=100000662081372

edit to add: I don't think that is her facebook profile. That one IDs himself (male) as from Compton. I was looking at a different page yesterday that included Parrish in her friends list.

From my readings yesterday, Yoshawnee's family (mom) may also have strong gang ties. Her family was agitating enough yesterday that my friend & her mother decided (were advised) not to attend the court proceedings yesterday. Also in the RUMOR category is that Y's family was calling for a revenge, er, "event".

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2011/04/parrish_bennette_arraigned_on.html
The arraignment took place in a courtroom packed with family and friends of Vaughn. Some of Bennette's family was also on hand.

Defense attorney Thaddeus Betz had argued that he did not believe the state had met the standard of probable cause to hold his client, prompting the prosecutor to ask the judge to clear the courtroom so they could lay out the case out of the public eye.

Waller at first declined to do so, prompting the prosecutor's office to send Deputy District Attorney Brian Davidson to the Donald E. Long juvenile facility to help argue the case. When he arrived, he said that revealing the details contained in the probable cause affidavit "would pose a significant risk to certain members of the community and compromise the investigation."

"We're not seeking to exclude the public from the arraignment," Davidson argued, just from the "sensitive nature of the facts in the probable cause affidavit." Waller agreed, moving the discussion into her chambers.
