Krispy Kreme in UK launches, quickly closes, KKK club

A branch of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in Hull, England, had the bright idea of launching a 'KKK Wednesday' club for kids. The moment the promotion hit social media, people began pointing out the other connotations a KKK club might have.

The Hull branch has withdrawn all the promotional materials and Krispy Kreme's HQ in the U.S has issued a formal apology:

' "We do believe this was a completely unintentional oversight on the part of our longtime franchise partners in the U.K.," according to a statement shared with USA TODAY Network by company spokesperson Lafeea Watson.'

One time I was visiting a state park with family and some people had tables set up in the middle of the park, selling food. I thought different groups were represented. I noticed a sign at one table for a fraternity/sorority called Kappa Kappa Kappa. Noting that the organization's initials were KKK, I avoided them. Only after I had purchased an item did I realize that Kappa Kappa Kappa alone was sponsoring the sale as a fund-raiser. I felt terrible about it and mentioned it to my sister but she didn't think there was anything sinister about the organization's name and said if they were associated with the other (sinister) KKK, they would not have been authorized to have a fund-raiser in a state park. I hope she was right, but I can't understand why an organization or business would use those initials knowing the connotation.

This promo happened in England. I do not believe that the KKK was a big part of their history. And I do not know how much American history is taught in their schools. I am sure this was an innocent mistake. Unfortunate but not intentional.
