A girl who was believed to have been swept away by a massive tsunami that devastated coastlines in Asia has reportedly shown up alive, nearly seven years to the day after she vanished.

Indonesian state news agency Antara reported the girl, named only as Wati, was aged eight when she was ripped from her mother's arms by the rushing waters near her home in West Aceh, Indonesia, in December 2004.

Talk about a Christmas miracle.

Wow, no kidding, praise the Lord for this miracle!!!!

I read that earlier - what a GREAT story! Wow.

I just wonder where she's been and hope she was loved and was not taken advantage of.

The 15-year-old showed up in Aceh province’s hard-hit town of Meulaboh earlier this week, saying that not long after the wave hit she was “adopted” by a woman who called her Wati and forced her to beg, sometimes beating her and keeping her in the streets until 1 a.m.

When the teen stopped bringing in money, she was told, “Go ahead, leave ... go find your parents then, they’re in Meulaboh.”

Meri, who is aged 14 or 15 according to different reports, returned to her hometown remembering only the name of her grandfather, Ibrahim.

Someone at the cafe knew a man by that name and got in touch.

"When I saw my mother, I knew it was her. I just knew it," she said.

"When she saw her mother she yelled 'mama' and ran toward her," her father, Tarmius, told AFP by telephone.

"Both of them hugged each other and cried," he said, according to the Associated Press news agency.

"The birthmarks on her belly, and a mole and scar on her face proved that the little girl was mine," her mother, Yusnidar, told AFP

I'd like to see DNA tests to be sure. I'm trying not to be suspicious of this story but it's not working out for me.

she sure doesnt look happy does she? none of them do...

maybe they were just caught at a bad moment, but i think there should be more proof.

if its true, i hope things turn out good for the family.

At this point, I'm believing it - only because I know that at times of disaster, people will prey on innocent children and take them. For nefarious purposes, to make adoption money, for prostitution, for begging, for many reasons. It happened a lot in Haiti.
