108 people missing in mudslide

This is a particularly hard event to follow. I watched a news clip today with interviews of those whose loved ones are missing.....I could feel their heartache.

A few pictures from the searches over the past few days.

Wanted to update. My friend's uncle was recovered earlier this week, and finally identified. He died from blunt-force trauma. She is grieving - he helped raise her. But, finding him and identifying him has helped the family move forward a little bit.

I'm praying for her, her family, and for everyone affected by this tragedy.

Oh Leilei, I'm so very sorry. Your friend and her family will be in my prayers.

One of the 30 bodies found does not fit with descriptions on the missing persons list, which, as of Thursday included 15 people, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office.

The only clue to the man's identity is his gold molars, said Heather Oie, operations manager at the Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office. He might have been someone who was on the highway or going for a hike.

This makes me want to cry:

"Fire Chief Opens Door on Mudslide's Emotional Trauma"

"Each night, I would stop by the station to check on my troops to see how they were doing," he said. "I will never forget talking with one of my young firefighters assigned with the tactical rescue team."

"His team recovered a young victim hours earlier, and I could see in his eyes the pain and despair as he described seeing the same toy that his daughter had."

Coming close to breaking down in tears, Stedman told the congregation: "From a first responder's perspective, I believe this incident will stay with each of us for the rest of our lives."

I only knew about this from another forum I visit, but there was a suicide in the aftermath also:

The search continues to produce daily accounts of grief and loss. On Tuesday, a U.S. Army soldier who took leave to search for missing family members believed to have been buried in the muddy rubble was found dead of an apparent suicide, authorities said.

Specialist Christopher Dombroski, 20, was found in the Capitol State Forest just west of Olympia, having suffered what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Thurston County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Greg Elwin.

Dombroski was the nephew of Steve and Theresa Harris, who are among the seven people listed as missing in the mudslide, said Lieutenant Colonel Joe Sowers, an Army spokesman.

The soldier, who had served one tour in Afghanistan, was granted time off from work at the 7th Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, south of Seattle, to help search for victims of the slide, Sowers said.

The family of a man long missing in Washington's March 22 landslide is confirming that the latest remains discovered were his.

Steven Hadaway was installing a satellite television dish at a home when the slide struck. The 53-year-old's brother confirmed to KIRO-TV on Monday that the remains found last Thursday were his...

The remains of 42 people have now been recovered, with one person known to be missing -- 44-year-old Kris Regelbrugge, whose husband also died.
