Defense: George Zimmerman in police custody

MIAMI (AP) — George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer charged with murder in the killing of Trayvon Martin, surrendered to police Sunday and was booked into jail after having his bail revoked two days earlier.

Zimmerman's legal team said in a tweet that he was in police custody. Zimmerman's bail was revoked because the judge said he and his wife lied to the court about their finances so he could obtain a lower bond.

On Sunday afternoon, about 40 minutes before the 2:30 p.m. deadline to surrender, Zimmerman was listed as an inmate on the jail website. He was listed as being held without bail and having $500 in his jail account.

SANFORD, Fla. -

Less than six weeks after bailing out of jail, George Zimmerman was placed back behind bars Sunday.

Zimmerman is accused of killing Trayvon Martin. He surrendered about 1:30 p.m., just about an hour before a court-imposed deadline by the judge who revoked his bail.

Zimmerman remained silent as he was escorted back to jail, but defense attorney Mark O'Mara said his client has a lot on his mind.

"He is worried about himself. He is worried about his wife. He is worried about his family. He is worried about everybody who has to be in hiding," O'Mara said.

George Zimmerman's Donations Spike on His Return to Jail

http://abcnews.go.com/US/george-zimmermans-donations-spike-return-jail/story?id=16490782

Donations to the legal defense fund of George Zimmerman have surged since the accused killer of Miami teenager Trayvon Martin has been ordered back to jail, his lawyer told ABC News today. ...........

O'Mara said that he will seek a new bond hearing and that the couple intends to apologize to the judge. .........

A transcript of one on April 16 conversation shows the couple talking in what the prosecution said was a code meant to hide the amount of money available. ..........

Zimmerman has waived his right to a speedy trial, meaning that if he is denied bail he could spend nearly two years in isolation as the trial, which is not expected to begin in 2013, progresses.

Attorney: George Zimmerman was confused, fearful
By MIKE SCHNEIDER, Associated Press – 1 hour ago
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The former neighborhood watch leader charged with fatally shooting Trayvon Martin was confused and fearful when he and his wife misled court officials about their finances during an April bond hearing that allowed him to be released from jail, his attorney said Monday.

"The gravity of this mistake has been distinctly illustrated, and Mr. Zimmerman understands that this mistake has undermined his credibility, which he will have to work to repair," O'Mara said.

Defense lawyers for George Zimmerman admitted Monday that their client made a “mistake” when he failed to mention some $135,000 he raised through a website before his April bond hearing, but the lawyers say this should not prevent Zimmerman from being released again on bail.

Zimmerman, charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin of Miami Gardens, returned to jail in Seminole County on Sunday after a judge revoked his $150,000 bond. Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester said Zimmerman sat silently “like a potted plant” while his attorney argued in April that he didn’t have the money to pay a higher bail.

In fact, Zimmerman and his wife controlled at the time at least $135,000 in donations Zimmerman solicited over a website in the days before his arrest in the high-profile case, prosecutors said. Zimmerman first mentioned the account to his attorney five days after the bail hearing.

Prosecutors also had an issue with Zimmerman's second passport because it was not disclosed to the court until after he was granted bond. Lester required Zimmerman to turn over his passport as a condition for granting bond. Rionda said that Zimmerman had another valid passport that was not disclosed to the court until almost a month after bond was granted.

John Romano: Time to fix a flawed 'stand your ground' law

http://www.tampabay.com/opinion/col...to-fix-a-flawed-stand-your-ground-law/1233609

.........So, no, I will not argue with the concept of a law based on self-defense.

But would you mind if I argued against the vagueness of that law?

Because if you read the [link] comprehensive report of "stand your ground'' by Tampa Bay Times reporters and researchers the previous two days, it's pretty hard to deny the ambiguity, misapplications and overall confusion this law has created in our court system.
-------

Yet consider the possibility that their confrontation had ended differently. What if it had been Martin who killed Zimmerman?

The teenager would have had a tailor-made case for a "stand your ground'' defense. After all, Zimmerman was an armed man pursuing Martin for no apparent reason.

Now, isn't there something remarkably ambiguous about a law that can be claimed by either side in the same deadly confrontation? The deciding factor should not be who survived long enough to act as their own witness.
