Three middle aged men thought to have been held as slaves, have been rescued following police raids in Bristol and Gloucestshire in the south of England. Two people have been arrested and charged with slavery offences.

Raids included a travellers' camp, business unit and residential home. Five others have been arrested in connection with cannabis production, money laundering and handling stolen goods.

The victims have been taken to a safe place and are being cared for

England seems to be becoming a people-trafficking/modern day slavery centre of Europe. It is an absolute disgrace and I am deeply ashamed of what is happening in the country of my birth. To anyone who has or is continuing to suffer, I am so sorry.

Completely antithetical to any progressive notion of the UK, this slavery matter is.
 
Six of the seven people arrested have been bailed.

When authorities said they are ensuring victims are safe and cared for, I hope they meant it. I wouldn't be surprised at all to find victims are threatened otherwise, and they'll be especially vulnerable if they are now homeless.

The increasing difficulty for people in England to find reasonably-priced, rented housing seems to be a contributing factor in many of these cases. The articles at this link make the point quite well, I think.

I'm glad to hear these people are being found and freed. It does seem much more awareness of trafficking has occurred in the past few years.
 
Kate Garbers founded that charity, after a visit to the Ukraine where she asked what happened to the children in care there, after they left. The answer set her on this journey. Just a brief google showed she does a huge amount of good and gives lectures, talks and works with many authorities to disrupt (love that attitude) human trafficking. What an admirable lady.

Thank you for bringing this news to WS. I know this is happening all over the world. It is devastating to be reminded how cruel humans can be, regardless of country, especially "next door".

That's what came to my mind, too! On the one hand this new case may lead to (another) backlash against the traveler community, on the other hand imo this traveler "trend" needs to be examined more closely. Which I don't know how they'll do without cries of racism... Operation Netwing came under criticism iirc.
