He had been serving as a motor vehicle operator assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C., according to the Department of Defense.
It was Monahans third deployment overseas and his first in Afghanistan. Monahan, who joined the Marines in 2006, also served twice in Iraq. He left behind a wife, Sarah, who previously served in the Marines, and their children Kierlyn, 4, and Caleb, 2. He also has a son Nathan, 6, from a prior relationship.
