On his last journey home, Island Heights Marine accompanied by special police, veterans escort

Monahan, 25, of Island Heights, died Nov. 26 in combat in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. On Tuesday afternoon, his body was escorted home to Ocean County...

...In Afghanistan, Monahan was in a vehicle when it struck an improvised explosive device. He had been serving as a motor vehicle operator assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C., according to the Department of Defense.

It was Monahan’s third deployment overseas and his first in Afghanistan. Monahan, who joined the Marines in 2006, also served twice in Iraq. He left behind a wife, Sarah, who previously served in the Marines, and their children Kierlyn, 4, and Caleb, 2. He also has a son Nathan, 6, from a prior relationship.

A Jersey boy... God Bless Marine Cpl. Christopher M. Monahan Jr and his family.

“This was the least I could do for him,” said Janice Jones of Toms River, whose father was in the Navy during the Vietnam War. “I gave two hours of my time. He gave his life for our country.”

Such simple words... off to cry now and say a prayer..

It is heart warming to see the Patriot Guard, Veterans and the community come out to honor him.

Rest in peace Marine Cpl. Christopher M. Monahan Jr.

Thank you so much for your service.

You are a hero!

I wish that when both wars are over we could have a gigantic ticker tap parade in NY. Like in the old days. I don't think they have had one since WWll. I think it would be so good for our soldiers and for the entire US. I have the details worked out in my mind. Some of our billionaires could sponsor it, as a tax deduction. I know there is a lot that would need to be worked out but I think it's the least we could do for our women and men who served our country with more tours than any other wars. My condolences to the family of yet another fallen soldiers.

It would be nice to think that right now, since when are all of our conflicts going to be over?, that folks could recognize the armed forces that are charged w/ defending our country are doing their job, whether they agree w/ the decision to do so or not, & that they are serving their country as best as they know how...put yourself in their place....& think about, & pray for, the military families that think about this, every day...

OMG,I just today stood in a procession for a boy one town over,a marine who was killed on Dec.1 in Afghanistan. People lined the streets
along the route. It was so moving. I think the motorcycle procession was what did it for me. His name is Cpl.Anthony Denier. He was just 26.

Everyone one of our soldiers deserves this final escort and support. So tragic that this is still going on.

God bless all of those who serve us, who serve our country in our stead.

Rest In Peace young men. Thank you for your service. Please know you are cared for and cherished.
