I totally believe he was simply because it's the only thing that would resolve my questions re: how quickly the two suspects were arrested, how eagerly LE tracked the case, and how much intel LEO seemed to have prior to the body being located on Sunday.
This KC Star article from one year ago also made me an even bigger believer in the CI theory:

But now that I think about it, would LE even want to publicize he was a CI even if it was true?

In regards to your question about if LE would want to publicize it if he was in fact a CI...My guess would be no, they wouldn't, as it might compromise aspects of their investigation/tip their hand so to speak. In a few other cases I've followed where the victim was a CI, the fact eventually came out during the investigation, but it wasn't confirmed immediately. Sometimes I think the family helps reveal the truth because in their quest for answers and justice, they feel like LE may have unnecessarily put their loved one at risk or should have done more to protect them. If that makes sense.
