Canada - Five slain at Brentwood house party, Calgary, 15 April 2014 *Insanity*

He ran away after the stab bongs, which would show some consciousness of guilt. Why not stay and keep stabbing people ? His parents have such a tough road ahead. They will have to live with not being able to intervene in time or not acting on their instincts soon enough. Tragedy all around, no silver lining .....

Respectfully snipped. I do not think him running from the scene implies that he understood he had some something wrong.

Reports suggest he targeted specific people, he could have run away once he had stabbed everyone he intended to. He could also have run away through fear (delusions that someone was going to hurt him) or running away due to so much adrenaline. He could have understood something very wrong was happening around him, but not be aware he was the cause for example.

Assessment explained

Dr. Kenneth Hashman, the head of forensic psychiatry services for southern Alberta, said the assessment made sure de Grood understands he will be appearing in a courtroom, that he understands the charges against him and that he is able to communicate with his lawyer.

Hashman said if a patient has no history of mental illness, then psychiatrists will collect information through a series of tests over a period of 30 days.

Even if an accused is found fit for trial, they can still be found not criminally responsible if they are found to have been mentally ill at the time of their crimes.

Fay confirmed a not criminally responsible defence may be considered.

A man accused in Calgary’s worst mass murder is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday after months in custody... De Grood, who is 22, is to appear in court to give his election and plea.

A psychiatric review determined that de Grood is fit to stand trial because he understands the charges against him and is able to communicate with his lawyer.

The accused, the son of a senior Calgary police officer, has been in psychiatric care since his arrest. His lawyer has not ruled out a defence that de Grood was not criminally responsible.

From grandmothers and uncles to university friends and pals since childhood, they sit together as one unified group, their devastation evident only moments earlier when many break down outside the courtroom’s doors, some weeping openly, others retreating to the washroom to wipe their eyes and try to pull themselves together.

“I didn’t know it was going to be this hard,” one elderly woman, a relative of one of the young men slain, tells me, apologizing for her tears. “I just miss him. Any chance you have some tissues in your purse?”

It’s hardly surprising, this spontaneous surge of emotion. This is, after all, the first time they have come face-to-face with the former friend who allegedly stabbed to death five promising young people on April 15, at what was a low-key gathering to celebrate the end of the post-secondary school year.

From part two of your link.. very moving, my heart goes out to all the families involved who must show restraint, just when their hearts must be breaking. imo.

"Fay offers an explanation for de Grood’s unsettling courtroom demeanour. “That’s more an effect of the medications he’s on, he’s desperately eager to please,” he says of his client, whose silence is in contrast to his “no comment” remarks at his first appearance, via closed-circuit TV, in May. “I think a lot of people, not knowing that, would think he’s being inappropriate.”

As for those here to bear witness on behalf of the dead, it will also be a long time before they speak out. Says one as he escorts a weeping woman out into the morning sunlight: “We’ll have plenty to say, when this is all over.”

"The house which was the site of Calgary’s worst mass murder has been put up for sale.

Five young people were slain at an end-of-school party in April at the house near the University of Calgary campus.

The real estate listing for the 1,033 square foot, four-bedroom home puts the asking price at $489,900.

The listing promises a great location on a massive lot but adds it “needs some work to turn it into the gem it can be.”

The house on Brentwood Blvd that the murders took place at is for sale.

I've been thinking about this case since it happened, as have many others.
The one thing that stands out to me is his course of studies....Psychology and Law. Interesting and unlikely combination at first glance, but perhaps not so much. They certainly could be complementary...each one helps the other in all kinds of instances.
MD is still undergoing psychiatric treatment and will be assessed to determine if he will be deemed to have been "criminally responsible at the time of the murders".
No doubt there's something going on there with the mental illness factor...there appears to be anyway.
There should be more information forthcoming on August 29, 2014 at the next scheduled court appearance for MD.
