Despite a lengthy weekend search near Fort Bragg, former Vacaville community activist Michele Schlick-Harris remains missing from Mendocino County.

Schlick-Harris, 52, drove away from her Fort Bragg home in a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle on New Year's Eve and hasn't been seen since.
Her roommate, Guy Batchelder, reported her missing on Jan. 6 and her car eventually was found parked outside a roadside inn in the small community of Caspar, about five miles south of Fort Bragg. The car was locked and its burglar alarm was set but had not activated, according to Fort Bragg Police Lt. Robert Watson.

A former Vacaville community activist who disappeared from her Fort Bragg home more than a month ago remains missing.

According to Fort Bragg police, 52-year-old Michele Schlick-Harris drove away from her residence on New Year's Eve. When she failed to return, her roommate reported her missing on Jan. 6. Her blue Volkswagen Beetle subsequently was located in the small town of Caspar, about five miles south of Fort Bragg.

Police Lt. Robert Watson said the car was locked and legally parked near a roadside inn there. The car's alarm system was functional but had not gone off and there were no signs of foul play.

The car later was impounded by police, who reportedly found Schlick-Harris' purse inside. Police are planning to conduct a forensic examination of the car and its contents this week, Watson said.

Schlick-Harris' blue 1999 Volkswagen Beetle was found parked in Caspar after she had been reported missing. Fort Bragg Police officers opened the car Jan. 17 and had it towed to an undisclosed location for further examination. Her driver's license was found inside the car. A search of the nearby areas and along Caspar Creek also turned up nothing.

Details of Disappearance

Schlick-Harris was last seen in Fort Bragg, California on December 31, 2007. Her roommate says she drove away from their residence that morning in her blue 1999 Volkswagen Beetle (which had no license plates) and never returned. She has never been heard from again.

Schlick-Harris's roommate reported her missing on January 6. He didn't do so before because he thought she was with a friend in Redding, California; he found out otherwise when that friend called to ask where she was.

Several days later, Schlick-Harris's car was found legally parked near a roadside inn in Caspar, California, five miles from Fort Bragg. Her purse and driver's license were locked inside, along with an uneaten banana Schlick-Harris had taken from home for her breakfast. The vehicle's alarm system was functional and had not gone off.

A search of the area turned up no sign of Schick-Harris. Her roommate stated she did not normally go to Caspar.

Schlick-Harris moved to Fort Bragg from Vacaville, California a year before her disappearance. She was a vocal critic of the city government in Vacaville and, in 2006, was arrested for violating a restraining order requiring her to stay away from city officials and employees. She pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 31 days in jail and three years' probation.

She was estranged from her husband at the time of her disappearance; he lived in Vacaville. Her case remains unsolved.
