CANADA Canada - Jolene Riendeau, 10, Point St Charles, QC, 12 April 1999

The Gazette has learned the suspect is a 47-year-old man who was charged in 2001, in Montreal court, with sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl. A year later, he pleaded guilty to sexual assault, sexual touching and inviting a minor to touch him in a sexual manner. He was sentenced to a 20-month prison term and 3 years of probation. As part of the same case, he was convicted of assaulting an adult woman and received the same sentence.

The link shows the error 404 message - so perhaps article was removed for some reason?

Thanks, the link seems to be fine now.

Here is more from detailed article..

In 2009, he was charged, in Montreal court, in two separate cases that are still pending. In one, he is charged with assaulting a woman in 2009. In the other, he is alleged to have threatened, forcibly confined and sexually assaulted a woman in 2007. He was granted a release, shortly after he was charged, by agreeing to follow a series of conditions.

A spokeswoman for Jolene's family said they are disappointed with the latest development but hope someone will soon be charged.

"It does not mean in anyway that it is over and complete," said Pina Arcamone, executive director of the Missing Children's Network.

"Needless to say that we're all very anxious at this point to know that someone sooner rather will be arrested and charged."

I wonder what is going on?

The Montreal police tried to keep a lid on information getting out while the man was questioned Friday, a matter Sgt. Ian Lafrenière described as "crucial to the investigation." Lafrenière said Jolène's remains were found in Montreal but wouldn't specify where or when.

"It is a jagged edge for us," he said. "We don't want to compromise a court appearance. That's why we are keeping some information to ourselves. Honestly, I know I'm holding back a lot of information. In 12 years as a spokesperson I think it's the first time that I'm doing it (to this degree). But in this case it is so important. We don't want to miss this one. We've been investigating this for 12 years."

Lafrenière said the man arrested Friday was not the person who led police to Jolène's remains. "What we can say is that it is someone who is wellknown to the police. Earlier in the week, when we announced we had found the body and that the case was a homicide, we said we were on a serious trail. That trail led us to this man. We hope this leads to him being arraigned."

I remember when Jolene went missing so well. I had even been in that part of the city the weekend before getting 'Green Spot' hotdogs. It is not such a good area. Over the years, I heard nothing. I'm glad she has been found for her family to have some closure. I wish I knew where they found her but they must have their reasons. I'm all approval of the police not releasing details if it helps get this guy. If he is still on the streets, he needs to be taken off them.

Suspect in Montreal girl's murder released
By QMI AGENCY

MONTREAL - A suspect in the disappearance and death of a little girl 12 years ago has been released by police.

The suspect was released around 3 a.m. Saturday.

"The investigation is not over," police spokesman Ian Lafreniere said.

No other information was expected to be released before Monday by police.

Police kept silent for more than 7 months after finding body of missing girl
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/canada/breakingnews/121505934.html
Police say they waited so long to publicly disclose their discovery for strategic reasons, as part of their investigation strategy.

Unbelievable, I have never heard of a case like this before. Holding back info on found remains? Has anyone else?

I can't say I have ever heard of LE withholding information about remains being found for months. However if it means they will have a better chance of nailing the person who is responsible, then I can understand why.

I am anxious to see how this case unfolds. I hope Jolene and her family finally get the justice they deserve.

OMG. I can't believe that LE waited since September 2010 to inform the family.

It seems apparent that it was possibly a construction worker who found Jolene's remains, since the Bridge is under Construction.

Was the Bridge built in 1999? Was there work being done on it then?

Was the announcement made in the media of remains being found, back in September 2010?

Different types of analysis were done on the body. The first confirmed the identity but others brought us to a suspect," Lafreniere said.

The delay "was really part of the goal of the investigation. We didn't want to reveal it immediately. It was the same thing for the family. We have explained why to the family and I think they understand," he said.

"The ultimate goal was to find a suspect but also to charge him."

Well, Champlain Bridge was definitely not built in 1999. It is Canada's busiest Bridge, with 160,000 crossings a day. That is likely why the location was chosen :(

Her fate was a mystery for 12 years, but Jolene Riendeau's remains were hidden a few metres below a span used by 60 million motorists every year

Makes me think that maybe under busy bridges might be a good place to look for other missing people...

Thanks, Dotr.

BBM: What sort of a test could have brought LE to the suspect in her murder, that would not have enabled LE to arrest them? EG. DNA testing would prove fairly conclusive, wouldn't it?

Also, I don't like the sounds of these things. I am wondering if Jolene was kept alive for some time, or if her remains were recently re-directed to the recovery location, perhaps because of the tip to LE regarding the Lake that they recently dredged?

I am also wondering if her remains were incomplete, thus leading some to question if they were human?

Lafreniere would not say whether the body had been buried, or who found the remains. In September, however, a police spokesperson told reporters remains were discovered by construction workers excavating the area. At the time, police weren't sure whether the bones were human.

Lafreniere said investigators are holding back information because of details only Jolene's killer would know. That includes how long investigators suspect the body was there.

I think the suspect must be someone the family knows... given that police didn't even tell this girl's parents that she had been found.

I'm wondering if the remains have been under that bridge for all those years or if police think they were placed there more recently for some reason? I wonder when the last time the bridge was serviced in that area would have been?

There is significance in my view as well to the fact that her remains were found under a bridge, in an area that was easily accessible by a bike path. As I recall, the girl left home on rollerblades. This makes me wonder if SHE knew the person they're suspicious of? Her remains were found 3kms from where she was last seen. So did she roll past that bridge for some reason? See someone she knew and maybe go down there with someone (perhaps even willingly for some reason?).

Or was she grabbed along her route somewhere, and stuffed into a car as she wheeled by?

Police are saying they know the suspect. He has a criminal history of assault against a 4 year old as well as other history. One has to wonder what line of work he was in? Construction perhaps? Just wondering out loud really.

I wonder if that is the case, if LE felt confident that the individual would not attempt to harm other family members or those close to the family.
