A Clackamas County judge reached a verdict Friday in what prosecutors and doctors called one of the worst child abuse cases they had ever seen.

Assault, criminal mistreatment and reckless endangerment charges against 23-year-old Derek Piskorski stemmed from the alleged abuse of a 3-year-old boy.
The judge read a lengthy verdict just before noon, declaring Piskorski guilty on five out of six counts of assault and criminal mistreatment.

Piskorski was dating the child's mother when he was accused of pouring scalding water over the child's neck, shoulders and back of his head, causing severe burns. He was also accused of putting the 3-year-old boy into a freezer.

The child's mother, Katey Scheurman, pleaded guilty last month for failure to intervene and sentenced to 180 days in jail along with three years' probation.

Scheurman told KGW in a jail interview that she was not able to protect her son. "I was just not thinking. I guess didn't know how to protect him right," she said

Clackamas Circuit Court Judge Ronald found 23-year-old Derek Piskorski guilty of scalding a 3-year-old with hot water and holding the boy's hand to a heater. He was also found guilty of criminal mistreatment and reckless endangerment. Piskorski was found not guilty in an allegation he stuffed the child into an operating freezer.

When asked why she didn't step in and stop the alleged abuse, Scheurman said it was because of her love for Piskorski.

"I was stupid and I was in love," she said. "I just didn't know how to protect myself and my son."

"It's just horrendous," said Sue Robinson. "When I first saw him in the hospital, he was unrecognizable, he was so swollen."

The boy is in the custody of the Department of Human Services. Officials said he continues to recover but suffers from emotional problems related to the abuse.

Several of Katey Scheurman's family members said they want her parental rights terminated. They also plan to set up a trust fund to support the boy.

Piskorski opted for a trial before Thom rather than a jury. Thom said determining the facts presented some challenges. Both Piskorski and Scheurman "have repeatedly been untruthful," Thom said. "They out and out lied."

Thom concluded that the 6-foot, 210-pound Piskorski spanked Noah with a belt, forcibly held the child under 130-degree water during causing extensive second-degree burns and pressed the child's hands against a wall heater until grill marks were burned into Noah's skin.

Thom said he puzzled over a hospital photo of the burns, cuts and bruises on Noah's body. Thom said he realized what made some of the injuries.

He took Piskorski's belt, which was seized as evidence months ago, and slapped the bench hard enough to make a hole.

The indentation, Thom said, was similar to the mystery marks on Noah's back.

This is very close to me. I checked her My Space because my daughter lives in Oregon City and I was curious if they knew each other. What gets me is when she says she knew it was wrong but she was "in love". What about being in love with your child? I hope she does get her parental rights terminated.

What I can't understand is how he was charged with 2nd degree, IMO it should have been attempted murder, and attempted murder should be dealt with just as severe as if he had succeeded in what he was trying to do!

Any mother who sits back and allows a pos to do this to their child should get the same punishment they get, she's just as guilty!

When I first saw pictures of Noah, my first thought was, Oh My God what a beautiful child!

I am pissed off she got some laughs cause it will probally be many years before her son will ever feel laugher without fear. He will most likely cry that he misses his mommy, children love unconditionally..too bad his "mother" didn't get that memo!

Didn't this guy have to sleep sometime? You can't protect your child? Besides making the mistake because you are so neeedy you bring a man into your home who hurts your child you could make the mistake of getting a bat and breaking that creeps dome while he's sleeping.

O.K. that's not the answer.

Myspace's are so telling. "Looking for someone that is sweet. has to like children". Then the diary thingies or whatever they call them "My feelings". ME ME ME ME ME ME. Oh and this baby was cutting teeth at one point and making her stressed. Yes, it's stressful so you think some brute is going to help?

Also Noah's first haircut. A caption saying he and another boy are coloring like "good little boys". They're babies, lady. They are always GOOD boys.

God please protect this beautiful child. Please let him get the help he needs to grow and not suffer because his own mother didn't protect him.

Sorry for the rant. BTW, her family members want her parental rights terminated. Why is this child in foster care? Will one of her family members take this little boy as their own? Anybody think about calling for help if they knew the guy was abusive?

"The only emotion I've seen in your expression is a feeling of being sorry for yourself," Thom said. "But I've seen little or any sympathy for Noah...We will not ever tolerate this sort of behavior from you or anyone like you against the youth of this community."

Piskorski, 23, choked up as he spoke on his own behalf.

"I hope -- I don't know what will happen to his life -- that he has a future and has a lot of friends and does good in his life," said Piskorski, clad in jailhouse stripes. "I also hope you will see I'm a good person. I've made some mistakes in my life, and I'm sorry. I hope everybody can forgive me."

According to trial testimony, Piskorski held the boy under scalding-hot water until his skin was burned off his back.

Another time, he held Noah's hands against a hot wall heater until his skin was branded with grill marks.

He also beat him with a belt buckle and held him submerged in the bathtub until he gasped for air.

I agree with others. The mom should get the same sentence as the abuser. This is just way over the line.

OMG! I hope this poor thing recovers enough to have a happy and satisfying life. Please, please, please! Keep that 'monster mom' away from this child!

Hopefully, she will NEVER have another child. If she does, the child should be TAKEN AWAY ASAP!
