Police: Great Neck man missing since Monday could be in Riverhead
BY TIM GANNON | STAFF WRITER

Quote:
A Great Neck man who has been missing since Monday is believed to be in the Riverhead area, according to Nassau County Police.

Steven M. Mayer, 65, of Great Neck was last seen at about 7:30 a.m. on Monday and last heard from Monday afternoon on a cell phone call that was traced back to a cell tower near Route 105 and Route 25, according to Mr. Mayer's son-in-law Mark Klinger. He said Mr. Mayer's cell phone battery has since died.

Mr. Mayer works as a metal trader and would not have had business in the Riverhead area, Mr. Klinger said, which is why the family believes he may have suffered a seizure or dementia while driving and gotten lost.

An earlier report said he may have been heading to the Bronx, but Mr. Klinger said his E-Z Pass had not been used and would have had to have been to get off Long island.

Mr. Klinger said volunteers are gathering at the Holiday Inn Express on Route 58 to help search for Mr. Mayer.

Mr. Mayer is described as 5-foot, 8-inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds. He is white, has brown hair and glasses and was last seen at 40 Radnor Road in Great Neck, in Nassau County on Monday at 11:30 a.m.

It is not known what he was wearing.

His car, which Mr. Klinger said also is missing, is a gray 2010 Nissan Sentra, four door sedan, with the license plate EWN-4035.

Anyone who may have seen him is urged to call the Mayer family at 1-516-847-5005, or police at 911.

Desperate Search Continues For Missing Great Neck Man

NEW YORK (CBS 2/1010 WINS) – On Long Island, police are asking for help in locating a man in his sixties who left his home earlier this week and hasn’t been heard from since. As CBS 2′s John Slattery reports, one clue put the man’s last whereabouts in Riverhead, far from where he lives

Praying for this family. See http://www.riverheadlocal.com/local-...-neck-man.html

Riverhead is the gateway to the Hamptons Resort area (40+ vineyards, beaches, boating) and this is a major holiday weekend coming up, with fine weather predicted. It's also Hamptons Film Festival week, with huge numbers of big name stars. There will be thousands of visitors touring the area, attending the movies, visiting farm stands, picking pumpkins, wine tasting, live music and various cultural events.

I hope the family has enough volunteers to get posters into every hotel/ B&B, restaurant, winery and farm stand. This man cannot have disappeared into thin air in such a small community. They say they know he didn't leave the Island because he didn't use his EZ pass, but there's no mention of the ferry from Orient, which goes to CT. That's only 20 miles from where his cell phone was last used.

It's also worth following the Riverhead Local page on Facebook because comments are being posted there as words spreads through Facebook, where a lot of these businesses are connected.

Missing Great Neck man's family wants search to focus on finding car

http://www.riverheadnewsreview.com/n...EWN-4035..html

Quote:
Jason Mayer said there had been information since Monday that suggested his father may have been on western Long Island, but that information has since been discounted and the search party is once again concentrating on the Riverhead area.
"We've been highlighting the search for him, but we want to highlight the search for his car, because a car is hard to lose," Jason said.

Search Intensifies For Missing Great-Neck man; Volunteers Needed

(Sunday, October 10th, 2010)

Quote:
Steven M. Mayer, 65 has been missing since Monday and has not been heard of since, as was reported first by YWN last week.

Searches over the last week have been ended with no results, and as a result organizations such as Shomrim, Chaverim, Hatzolah are all coordinating a massive search for tomorrow morning on a specific area. Search and rescue professionals from these Organizations have asked for help in bringing as many volunteers as possible to Riverhead, NY tomorrow for a detailed walking grid search.

If you cannot participate in the walking search we ask that you still come to help as there will be other tasks such as handing out flyers and driving around the area.

The search will begin at 9 am tomorrow morning and continue throughout the day. You can arrive at any time during the day.

Search For Missing Long Island Man Intensifies

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (WPIX) — The search for a missing Long Island man is intensifying asfrustration builds for friends, relatives and authorities after Steven Mayer, 65, disappeared without a trace a week ago.

In a world where it is increasingly difficult to avoid the ever-present eye of surveillance cameras or drive through busy urban areas without leaving a digital trace, it seems baffling that Mayer could have left his home in Great Neck for his job as a scrap metal trader in Hungtington, only to vanish into thin air.

With great sorrow I am informing my family, all of you, that my father in laws body, Steven Mayer, was found yesterday in Riverhead, Long Island by a care taker on a wooded property. My father in law, like Ilan, brought the Jewish community together in an extraordinary way when 2,000 people from Am Yisroel went to search for him last week and have offered their endless support. We thank Hashem for a resolution, although it was not the one we were hoping for. At least we can feel a sense of relief that my father in law was found and can get a proper buriel. The funeral will be Monday morning at Siani Chapel in Queens at 11:30 and shiva will be at 40 Radnor Road in Great neck.

Quote:
UPDATE (4:00 pm): The body found in a wooded area off Doctors Path near Sound Avenue Saturday afternoon has been positively identified as Steven Mayer, Riverhead Police announced this afternoon. The cause of death remains under investigation by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.
I feel so bad for this family, and hope they find peace soon, but the circumstances of this man's death don't add up. The timeline is troubling for a start.

He left his home at around 8am, supposedly to go to his office about 19 miles away (Great Neck to Huntington). Google maps is allowing 30 minutes, but when he called his secretary to say he was on the LIE heading East, and would be there in 15 minutes, that was 3.5 hours later. What was he doing for those 3 hours BEFORE he called his secretary?

He can't have been driving to Riverhead all that time, as it's only 68 miles away from his home in Great Neck, or 49 miles from his office in Huntington, which would be a journey of around 1.5 hours maximum. He could have been there and back in that time, or somewhere else and back in that time, like Manhattan for example.

Wherever he'd been prior to that, if he was on the expressway heading east to Riverhead when he spoke with his secretary/ boss, then traveling the distance of 49 miles (from Huntington) or 69 miles (from Great Neck), would have placed him within range of the Riverhead cell tower at around 1.30pm. This fits with the report that he made calls from the Riverhead area ( junction Rte 25 and 105) 1.5 hrs apart, with the last one made at 3 pm.

His body was then found less than a mile away from that junction 11 days later. So what was he doing between 1.30 pm and 3 pm on Monday Oct 4th that would ultimately cause his demise and place him deep into the woods?

The autopsy will hopefully answer all these open ended questions.

RIP Steven Mayer
