Adam Baker faces new charges, can't leave U.S.

Police say Baker used James Starbucks' name and Social Security number to get power with Duke Energy. Starbuck married the daughter of Adam's wife, Elisa Baker, who is charged with murder in her stepdaughter's death.
The crimes allegedly happened in August. Police said a report was filed in December.
While police commented Wednesday about the recent charges, they wouldn't say if Baker is still being investigated in connection to Zahra's death.
“We're not going to talk about anything today except for the case that he had his court appearance on this morning,” said Deal.

AB to remain in custody
The father of slain 10-year-old Zahra Baker made his first court appearance Wednesday on felony charges of identity theft and obtaining property by false pretenses. He faces up to 30 months in prison if found guilty.
Immigration officials have also placed a detainer on Baker, meaning even if he posts the $10,000 bond, he will remain in custody. Baker has been living in the United States illegally, according to Catawba County jail officials.

Businesses raising money for playground in memory of Zahra Baker
ICKORY, NC (WBTV) - Three grocery stores in Hickory are joining with the Kiwanis Club to sell support cards for the Zahra Baker All-Children's playground.
Baker is the 10-year-old girl who was reported missing by her father, Adam, last October. Several weeks later, her dismembered body was found in Caldwell County. Zahra's stepmother, Elisa, has since been indicted on second-degree murder charges in connection with Zahra's death. Read related story about charges now filed against Adam Baker.
Three Fresh Air Galaxy grocery stores are now selling support cards for $1, $5 and $10 to raise funds to building the playground in memory of Zahra.
"We are very excited that Galaxy Foods has taken the initiative in this project and hope it will serve as a roadmap for other businesses to get involved," said Lanny Huffman, President of the Hickory Kiwanis Club. "As the Kiwanis Club and Kiwanis community, we find it a wonderful challenge and commitment to raise money for this cause."

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Adam Baker, the father of a slain Hickory girl, has been released from the Catawba County Jail and is now being held in a federal prison in Texas.
Baker, who was hoping to get his passport back recently, had been held in the county jail from April 13 until this morning, although he posted bond this past weekend.

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. -- The father of 10-year-old Zahra Baker is no longer being held at the Catawba County Jail but it’s unclear exactly where Adam Baker is now.
Authorities said Baker was picked up recently by immigration officials, but U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said he is not currently in its custody.
Citing privacy issues, ICE spokesman Temple Black would not confirm whether immigration agents took Baker into custody or whether he was released.
Federal prison records list an Adam Baker in custody at a federal prison in Anthony, Texas, but show that person has been in custody since 2009.

DA pushes for more restrictions in Adam Baker release
In a motion filed on April 21, attorneys requested a judge restrict Baker from leaving the 25th Prosecutorial District, which includes Burke, Catawba and Caldwell Counties.
Under his current pre-trial release, Baker is not allowed to leave the state but does not have any county restrictions.
On Wednesday, his lawyers filed a response asking the judge to deny the request. They argue Baker is not a flight risk, and he is already wearing an electronic monitor.

Zahra Baker's father sees charges dropped
The charges against Adam Baker were dismissed Friday in Superior Court in Newton. Baker's lawyer, Mark Killian, says the Australian native has made restitution in the case.
Baker was accused of writing bad checks for around $240 to local grocery stores.
He still faces other charges, including felony identity theft and obtaining property by false pretense.

NEWTON, NC (WBTV) - Adam Baker appeared in Catawba County Superior Court Wednesday morning for a bond modification hearing and a judge told him he is free to leave the state as long as he files a notice in advance.

Superior Court Judge Eric Levinson ruled Baker must abide by all federal requirements relating to the ankle monitor, that he must give the district attorney’s office at least seven business days’ notice of any out-of-state travel and that he is to notify the clerk of court’s office of any change of address or change of employment address.

Elisa Baker under heavy guard at Caldwell County arraignment
Elisa Baker pleaded not guilty in her arraignment hearing for four felony charges in Caldwell County Wednesday afternoon.
Baker, 42, was in court for two counts each of felony identity theft and felony obtaining property by false pretenses. She is accused of using her daughter’s information to obtain phone and communication information from CenturyLink at a Hudson residence, as well as that same daughter’s information to get services from Duke Energy.

District Attorney Jay Gaither said he didn't want to comment as to why the state wants to keep such a close eye on Adam Baker. Meanwhile, while the multiple court hearings are held for Adam Baker and Elisa Baker, the community continues to build a memorial for Zahra alongside Christie Road where her prosthetic leg and a bone were discovered.

"The indictment alleges Elisa Baker conspired and distributed oxycodone, hydrocodone and alprazolam from at least 2006 to October 2010, when she was arrested in connection with Zahra's death. Oxycodone and hydrocodone are prescription painkillers and alprazolam, commonly know as Xanax, is used to treat anxiety disorders."

Zahra to be honored at Nascar Race
