Ontario man missing in Mexico

OTTAWA — An eastern Ontario man attending a showcase in Mexico hasn't been seen or heard from seen since last Friday and his family is now fearing the worst.

Daniel Dion went to Acapulco three weeks ago to showcase eco-purses he designs.

The disappearance of an Ottawa-area businessman in Mexico has prompted his family to fly south to organize a search for him.

Family of Daniel Dion say he was last heard from while at a restaurant in Acapulco on Friday. He didn't make it to a business appointment the next day and his credit cards haven't been used since.

Daniel Dion was the kind of man who called or texted his wife often, as much as 30 times a day. But the well-connected Sherbrooke native who was on a business trip in Mexico hasn’t been heard from for a week.

Family members in Montreal were fearing the worst Thursday.

OTTAWA-Police in Mexico are refusing to help find a Carleton Place businessman who has been missing since he ate dinner at a restaurant in Acapulco a week ago, his family says.

As a result of Daniel Dion’s disappearance, his distraught wife and brother have flown to Mexico to join in the growing search for Dion, who turned 51 last week. But they have been met with resistance by Mexican police.

“They basically (told) the family to do the investigation yourself,” Dion’s niece, Franceska Dion, said in an interview Thursday night.

“This is completely unacceptable.”

The credit card transaction was denied, but Daniel Dion's family hopes it will lead to new information about his whereabouts.

OTTAWA — The family of an Ottawa area man who disappeared in Mexico about one week ago received word Saturday evening that Mexican police had found the car he had rented with a burnt body in the trunk.

An Ottawa-area businessman who was reported missing in Mexico has been found dead, his family says.

Daniel Dion, 51, was from Sherbrooke, Que., but lived near Ottawa in the town of Carleton Place.

His sister, Johanne Dion, confirmed on Sunday that authorities have found his body, but provided no other details. Family members had flown to Mexico to help with the search.
