Well, the defense certainly put up a fight so I can't imagine that the DP can be overturned on appeal. Let's hope the state of Conn. doesn't waste too much time and money on SH. I'm anti-DP but this is a case that screamed for it. May this bring some closure and comfort to Dr. Petit and the surviving family and friends.

Thanks, McDraw. I thought I was odd for feeling that way. I know a lot of people personally that have never sat on a jury and they are all soooo sure of how "simple, and cut and dried" coming up with a verdict is -when it's not!

ADD: I just have to add this in to get it off my chest - as obvious as it is if someone is guilty, our legal system makes sure juries walk through a process, proceedures, steps, legalities, paperwork, etc. It is draining and serious and weighs heavy on your mind. JMO

The average time on death row in Ct can be up to 20 years! The last two executions occurred "rapidly" only because the criminals asked that all appeals be STOPPED and even THEN the defense lawyers within the state took up the cause to continue the appeal process!

I just want to say that I broke into tears when I saw this news. I remember listening to SP sentencing and broke into tears then too.

I followed Laci's case, word for word, even reading the actual transcripts days after they happened and KNEW from early on he was guilty. But it's so heartbreaking when it's over. There are no winners in cases such as this. Death on both sides.

Contrary to the chat on the street, it was not cut & dry, these folks are torn UP! lots of tears, deep sighs and closed eyes but huge relief after being polled BUT no changes! And folks seem to be FALLING back into the chairs in relief after being questioned.

Judge chose to speak with jury in public: thanking them and reminding them that they need not talk to anybody and can be escorted out secretely if they wish, acknowledges that they saw things that they never thought they'd ever see and saw depravity.


Welcome to my world of seeing depravity of human actions BUT at least I'm prepared for it, thankfully HOPEFULLY these folks will be restored by the knowledge that they achieved justice for a family

Joypath, that is surprising. Not sure why sentencing wouldnt happen today. since there is no presentence investigation/report necessary, this is a simple matter and takes only a few minutes. Sure seems like a waste of logistical resources to have to bring him back in a month for sentencing then.

TOTALLY agree! going to "snoop" and try to get some inside dope if possible...but not call in too many favors for this piece of fecal material, if you get my drift!

I don't get to log in that often these days, but I want to give joypath a big shoutout and say THANK YOU for all that you do. I've been through many a major trial SAGA trial/penalty/punishment-phase myself (observer and wife of the prosecutor.....never an expert witness!) and I admire you so much. Just want to say Thanks, and I know just how draining the march to justice is. My heart aches for Mr. Petit and the Jurors. Take Care, and thanks for the updates!

Anyone know when exactly the next trial is scheduled? I just keep hearing "next year". That will be just as gut wrenching i'm afraid. Maybe even more so. The letter and diaries and the book will figure prominantly in that trial i imagine.

I watched the interview with the family and it was heartbreaking.

Dr. Petit's father-in-law spoke first and just broke my heart. His wife also spoke a few words and it is very clear that they are exhausted and thankful.

Dr. Petit spoke and my tears flowed like water listening to him. He was so thankful for the prosecution, the jury, the press (even though he did get tired of having his picture taken so much), his friends and his family. He expressed he was fortunate he was employed and a physician as it seems the defense has unlimited funds for their case, but the victims do not. He spoke of his beautiful wife and how much she meant to him and how hard she worked for others. He talked about his lovely daughters, little girls to him, who were tortured and murdered in their bedrooms surrounded by stuffed animals. He said the medical examiner required someone identify the bodies and his sister and brother agreed to do that since he was in the hospital. When they returned from the hospital, Dr. Petit wanted to know if they could have an open casket service. By that time, I was crying too hard, I could barely hear what was being said.

I am amazed at Dr. Petit's strength and courage in front of the microphones. I am afraid I would be so angry and bitter, that I couldn't speak as eloquently as he has done. Unfortunately, there is another long and dreaded trial looming in the near future for him and his family again. Another time of reliving that horrible night and hearing over and over again the heinous things done to his wife and daughters. I know he will again be surrounded by family and friends. I worry about him when this is all done as I feel right now this is his agenda....bring these pieces of scum to justice. I pray for strength for him and his family during the next trial and for the rest of their days as they have to live with the fact that 2 "men" decided to create a chamber of murder and torture out of their family home for no other reason than to be in control of others who have worked hard and have it better than they do.

May God be with Dr. Petit and his family as they continue this sad journey they have been thrust into.

Well gang I am a little late but am relieved that the DP came through, I was worried that with the amount of time it seemed to be taking that it might not happen. I pray that this gives Dr Petit and other family members a bit of solace on the part of Hayes.

I wish the best for the jury members too, they have had to view and hear things that no one should have to. God Bless them all!

Not sure if this is a qualified source but according to it, CT has only 10 people on death row and only 1 that has been executed since the supreme court reinstated the DP back in '76.
