VA - Shoosmith Landfill - WhtFem (UP 6642), 20-35, w/Richmond trash, Aug'86

I found these two cases on Doe Network and wanted to post them for you all to take a look at. I think there are a lot of similarities between these two women and was wondering if anyone else thinks this might be a match?
Elizabeth Crawford disappeared in July 86 from South Carolina, this unidentified womans torso and leg were found in August 86 400 miles away in Chesterfield VA. I looked the towns up and it is a straight shot from Simpsonville SC to Chesterfield VA on I85.

Case History

The victim was located at the Shoosmith landfill in Chesterfield County, Virginia on August 7, 1986. The head, hands and both legs had been removed from the body by some type of electrical/mechanical saw. Only the torso and left leg have been recovered. It appears the remains were kept in a relatively cool environment (refrigerator) or semi-air tight container to delay decomposition.

and here is the info for Elizabeth Crawford.

http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/517dfsc.html

Elizabeth Noleeka Crawford
Missing since July 16, 1986 from Simpsonville, Greenville County, South Carolina.
Classification: Endangered Missing

Vital Statistics
Date Of Birth: January 11, 1952
Age at Time of Disappearance: 34 years old
Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 5'3; 125 lbs.
Distinguishing Characteristics: White female. Brown hair which was frosted blonde at the time of her disappearance.
Marks, Scars: Scar on the abdomen from a hysterectomy operation; 2 moles on left side of the face
Nickname: Libby
Dentals: She has a dark front tooth.
Circumstances of Disappearance
On the evening of July 16, 1986 Ms. Elizabeth Crawford received a telephone call at her home at 108 Cherrywood Mobile Home Park in Simpsonville, SC. After receiving this phone call, Ms. Crawford told her son she was going to a friend's house and would be back soon. Ms. Crawford never arrived at the friends house. This was at 10:30 PM and she has not been seen since.
The Simpsonville Police Department have witnesses who state they saw Ms. Crawford two days after the disappearance in the company of a white male outside the Ingles in Simpsonville.
On July 19, 1986, Ms. Crawford's 1978 Chevrolet Malibu, 2 door was found abandoned in Fountain Inn on Georgia Street in front of Wilson Sporting Goods, five miles from her home.

Does anyone else think this could be Elizabeth Crawford? They are only 2 states away so they may have been compared/ruled out already?

I've bolded the matches and it looks like it could very well be a match - the only discrepancy I see is the unidentified female's estimated date of death was June 1, 1986, while Elizabeth Crawford didn't go missing until July 16, 1986.

The UID had a vaginal hyst. There would not be any abdominal scar. I really don't think this would be a match since Elizabeth had a scar. IMHO

VA - UID Female Hot Case 139 - discovered 7 August 1986

When submitting the info on the other case, I also queried DN on this one. I had seen on an old forum somewhere from 2006 that someone was going to submit this one, but according to DN this has never been submitted. The forum poster never updated the post to say whether they sent it to anyone.

This one was submitted to the Doe Network matching panel this morning by me.

http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/38dfva.html

Hazel Alice Klug
Missing since May 20, 1986 from Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia.
Classification: Involuntary

Vital Statistics Date Of Birth: August 22, 1962
Age at Time of Disappearance:
23 years old
Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 5'3; 117 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics:
White female. Blonde hair; blue eyes.
Marks, Scars: She has a scar on the abdomen.

Circumstances Of Disappearance
Klug, a title researcher for a Richmond law firm, spoke to a co-worker whom she was dating on the phone around 11:30 PM on May 20, 1986 from her home in the Crestview area of Richmond, VA. It was a normal conversation and Klug gave no indication that anything was wrong.

Klug did not report to her workplace the next day, May 21. The police searched her home and discovered that her dog was still at home, along with her car.

The only items missing were Ms. Klug's purse and a suitcase. The suitcase was large enough to put the 5-foot-3-inch Ms. Klug in and take away unnoticed.

Police suspect foul play in Klug's disappearance.

Wow.

Er... the only thing wrong with this is why she hasn't been looked at already.

She matches in every way including time, she is found in the neighboring county, she has an abdominal scar (possibly a hysterectomy althoguh she would have been very young to undergo such a procedure), there is an indication that the victim was kept in an airtight container (such as Hazel's missing suitcase).

It would be easy to eliminate a match based on the medical information of the body found but Jeez... if it's not her then it'd be surprising and if she hasn't been looked at then it'd be positively shocking.

I actually thought that a long, long time ago (back in the summer) but was so sure that it was just too similar to be true and NOT already be checked out.

It is possible, however, that it has been checked with LE directly (bypassing Doe) already and ruled out. Also possible that LE ruled it out themselves back during the original investigation.

There are still hurdles to jump, it's just that no one has ever turned the match over to Doe Network.

I've got my fingers crossed for this one. Her face has been in my memory since I first saw it...

I'm confused. How do they know the hair color of the UID if they only recovered her torso and one leg?

Maybe they found some of her hair w/body

Not sure however, how they would know it was her hair or the perp, it states NO DNA available.... hmmmm. Good question.

I wonder why NO DNA has been taken and entered into CODIS. We can assist with this by providing info on how this ME can get FREE DNA kit for this UID and get her info in CODIS with hopes of matching her to someone missing that has been entered.

I did think that it could have been body hair that they made the judgement on but the fact that they referenced highlights and length suggests it must have been head hair.

Probably they assumed it was the victim's due to the length (men have short hair, don'tcha know ). In the absence of DNA testing at the time there may have been other forensic tests but I guess we don't know.

It's surprising that there is no DNA available from the body, given that it must have been relatively well preserved at the time and isn't that old now.

I'm just worried that if that UID is Hazel Alice Klug, that after 22 years, there may not be anything stored for her case to provide a match with this UID.

The Doe info gives no indication on what (if anything) is available to match her to this UID. DNA, etc.

How difficult would it be to match a torso and a leg to a person whose been missing for 22 years without a DNA sample? Sounds really hard to me but I'm not a forensics specialist.

I was rereading the initial post...the only submission has been to the DOE Network? If correct, I would also submit and discuss (you may get answers to all of your questions) to LE handling each case listed here, making them each aware you submitted to the other agency and DOE. JMO.

Wow, Henrico County's website has a beautiful full-sized portrait of Hazel Alice on their website....

http://www.co.henrico.va.us/police/c.../klugphoto.pdf

I'll have to wait to call them (I'm at work) but I will send an email this morning and see if they will let me know anything that way. If not, I'll call sometime this week.

VA - Shoosmith Landfill - Female HC 139, 20-35, Aug 1986 - w/Richmond trash

The date/time of death may be incorrect if remains were stored in a cooler of some kind. This may be a match to this case file:

]The Doe Network:Case File 929DFMD - Billy Jean Hall - Missing since February 28, 1985 from Jessup, Anne Arundel County, Maryland

Scars match and she had injuries from a car accident.

Hall left Jessup on February 28, 1985 in a Nissan Camper to go to a biker convention in Daytona Beach, Florida. She was to be gone for two weeks.
After four weeks, no one had heard from Hall and she was officially reported missing. Chester VA is very close to I-95 - the route she would have most likely taken to get to Daytona.

Thoughts??

Definitely plausible.

Slight concern (as with Hazel) is that we don't know why Billy Jean had an abdominal scar; she appears to have had surgery as a result of the car crash however, and of course there is no mention of her having had a hysterectomy or of course of any buttock scarring on the UID.

That, and the time frame, make her less likely than Hazel to me but assuming that Hazel has already been investigated and somehow excluded, I'd consider Billy Jean a serious candidate.

I'm pretty sure the Henrico authorities would have looked at Hazel Klug as the first candidate for the headless torso found in the next county - that find made headline news at the time. The abdominal scar on the torso was probably vertical as was Billy Jean Hall's scar. The bone island anomaly in right Iliac may also be as a result of accident trauma. Again, would be difficult to tell exact time of death if the body had been placed in a freezer. The fact that the head and leg were removed might suggest there was identifying characteristics there - such as would have been very obvious with Billy Jean Hall's reconstructive surgery?

Another possible candidate might be Patricia Ann Schmidt DOE 2158DFVA- she went missing 060485 from Richmond VA. She has a C-section scar and had red hair??

My only question about the UID being Billie Jean Hall is that on the Charley Project it states that her credit card was used in Daytona Beach which lead the investigators to believe that she actually arrived in Daytona Beach.

Just a thought.

That is correct except that it was a white male that used the card - not Billy Jean.

I have found a MySpace for a woman who claims to be Hazel Alice's cousin (her parents are now deceased) and wonder if I should send her a message?

Edit: Not about the UID, obviously. But just a polite message, maybe letting her know she should try to get her added to NCMA too.

hiya shannon! I typically always try to refrain from making initial contact with someone that has a missing family member, I leave that up to LE. If they come to us, well then.... JMO, FWIW.

However, if she has a myspace, and the myspace is talking about the missing case...I don't see why we couldn't send her a 'bulletin', informational, possibly even from WS/LTWH (we have a myspace page, needs work, LOL!) We could send her Project Jason's site, our site, info on DNA, different databases she could be listed in, yada yada.

We should have something like the done, but we don't. We have been going on a case by case basis.

Thoughts?

shannon, you have myspace experience?? HELP WANTED!

Well, it's "sorta" talking about the missing persons case. It has a message on it about Hazel Alice and directs anyone with interest or who knows anything to go to the Charley Project page.

There was another reason I decided not to approach this person anyway. Anything that sets a whistle off in my head I follow, you know what I mean?

Oh, and yes, I have MySpace exp. If you want I'd be glad to assist.

I spoke with Chesterfield Co VA Sheriff's office and apparently there is DNA available on the UID. It's old, of course, and may be unusable at this point. The Md State Police are following up on the possible match with Billy Jean Hall to this UID also.
