Bloomington Police search for missing 20 year old woman
Lauren Spierer, age 20.
She is a white female, 4 feet 11 inches tall, slender build, has blue eyes and long blonde hair. She is listed as a student according to IU Bloomington's website.
Spierer was last seen walking south on College Avenue from 11th Street on her way back to her apartment in Smallwood Plaza, located on College Avenue.
She did not arrive to her apartment and video footage does not show her entering the apartment complex.
Spierer was wearing a white tank top with a loose, light colored button shirt over it and full length black stretch pants. She was not wearing shoes.

I am assuming that the white truck has not been located, as LE would certainly want to stop the calls coming in from the public with tips about every white truck on the road.

Did we have a list going of what possible jobs would involve being out at about 4:30 AM for legitimate purposes?

I have newspaper delivery/distribution stuck in my head for some reason, as well as a truck seeking day laborers as another possibility. Both might have a reason to circle blocks, i.e filling paper machines for example, or seeking workers. Also private security patrols often use a white truck, I've seen this in various cities. (It seems that LE would be aware of security firms and vehicles in the area however.) Any other ideas?

My uni had white trucks like those as facilities vehicles during construction. Usually not out early in the morning unless to move cones and barrels to new locations that couldn't be crossed.

Do day laborers usually hang out in downtown areas? I usually see them here by the highway.

Questions for IU students/grads, Btown, and other locals: Does IU operate on the Blue Light Emergency Phone system? If so, are the poles located just within immediate campus areas, or does it extend to popular student housing in the area such as where LS and the POIs lived? Do students know about and actually use them? What about campus emergency telephone lines?

I don't know what that is.

Are incidents required to be released to the public? What about emergency texting/calling alerts? Any and all info on campus safety for IU would be much appreciated.

I think the research park should be searched more thoroughly (it is located on the other side of 10th and Morton on Google Maps).

Allegedly, that truck going west on 10th turned north onto Morton the first time around, but not the 2nd.
Why would someone then go into the research park on the 2nd pass?

Hey guys
Can someone tell me again about how long it took to walk from Smallwood to CR's apt? From other maps, i thought it didn't look as far. But looking at this one carefully, it seemed she still had a ways to go and corners to turn walking alone on her way home that night. :( Did JR say he watched her till 10th and College?
That still left her a little ways to go. How long did they say it took to walk from one place to the other?
WHY couldn't JR just freaking walk her home that night? WHY??
Do any of these POI's have cars? Any of her "friends" have cars? Or white trucks by any chance?

I hope this is not some illegal immigrant grab........flee to Mexico deal.

I know of several cases where it was exactly that.......working constuction, killed someone and returned to Mexico.

Campus blue lights are an emergency telephone system. Basically they're a giant pole with a big red button that if pressed, places a call directly to 911 and light a blue light at the top. They often look like this:

In an emergency situation they can be used to report suspicious activity, or, if you're chased, you can hit all the buttons as you run away so emergency personnel can track you.

Thanks for the help!

IU doesn't have the emergency blue light system, I believe we have some scattered call boxes but nothing substantial. When I visited friends at University of Maryland I saw the lights and was surprised when they weren't here too, considering we have a larger student population than UMD. There is a safety escort service with limited hours:

Because 10th Street continues on 1 more block to another main North South Street that runs the length of the City, (Rogers St.).

I don't understand why we have'nt seen more tape/pictures of her or the truck. Should'nt there b her crossing or attempting to cross 10th street? And the truck should have been picked up going all the way around the block.

Police follow phone call tip, search wooded area near Martinsville, nothing found
http://idsnews.com/news/story.aspx?id=81958

At about 3 p.m., the BPD received a phone call on a tip line that said there was a suspicious odor in the area, BPD Capt. Joe Qualters said.

“We went up into the area that was described. We also checked by air the whole area up there, and while checking apparently someone found what appeared to be a fresh mound of dirt described as two feet by four feet,” he said. “They then began checking around underneath that ground and found absolutely nothing.”

If there are no cameras there, then it's not possible to get tape/pictures.

Also, looks like HT's FB profile is now set to private.

Just an FYI, where the bars are and Small Wood is located is off campus.

If JR's statement that he saw her turn off 11th, onto College Ave. is accurate.
She had 2 1/2 blocks in a straight line to walk to get to Smallwood.

According to the [ame="http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6698438&postcount=25"]LE timeline[/ame] she walked 1 1/2 block from Kilroys to Smallwood in 3 Minutes.

She then walked 1 1/2 - 2 blocks from Smallwood to 10th St. alley in 7 minutes.

So, her walk from the corner of 11th & College Ave to Smallwood should have taken less than 10 minutes.

Hi folks, I've lived in Bloomington since the late '80s and have been attending searches daily for Lauren since they began. Thanks for the intelligent discussion of this case. I hope I can add to the dialogue.

Nickel, there are a few Blue Light phones, but they are not easily accessed (I honestly can't remember where they are and I walk through campus every day). People used to get a kick out of setting them off and running away. These are only on campus. The area in which LS lives is on the far west side of downtown-- quite a distance from campus. Her building is, however, located right next to the Monroe Country Jail and City Hall is behind her building, so there is a constant police presence there.

The research park has been thoroughly searched (part of it by me). Why go through the research park on the second pass? Because it empties straight out onto Rogers Street. If the driver took a right, he could go half a block to 11th Street, take that west and then on to Vernal Pike and across SR 37. Or, as I have suspected, take a right on Rogers, continue to 17th St., turn left and be on the very isolated Maple Grove Road / Bottom Road in under 10 minutes. There are woods, fields, marshes, prairie land within 10 minutes of where LS was last seen. Going through the research park to Rogers would be a quick and easy way to get there.

If I may point something out, for people who aren't from Bloomington: if you note on Btown's excellent map, the sidewalk on College Ave. is actually separated from the street by a (roughly) three-foot wide grass "buffer" strip. I point this out because it slightly complicates the idea of an abduction by someone pulling alongside and pulling her into the car. If LS was indeed abducted along this strip of road, her abductors would have had to either coax her off the sidewalk and towards the street OR park, get out of the car and grab her. There are houses all along this strip of road with multiple residents and I've had a hard time envisioning this scenario when absolutely no one along this area heard or saw a thing.

How many different roads could this truck have taken to leave the downtown area, once they passed thru the 2nd time? Seems like there would be cameras on most of the streets, at least one per street. I wonder if LE has an idea of which way this truck went and will begin to released more info this week, since it does not seem as though they have found it. I am still rather stunned that in 5 days of internet postings, etc. this ruck has not been identified. People other than the actual driver and occupants if any know whose truck this is.
