CO- Dr. Michael Von Gortler, 53, & daughter Makana, 20, Missouri Mtn, 22 June 2011
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43589415/ns/us_news-life/
"A helicopter search Thursday of a four-mile hiking trail on a 14,000-foot peak found no sign of a father and daughter missing on a hiking trip, but the woman's aunt says family members still hope for a successful rescue.
Chaffee County Sheriff Pete Palmer says Dr. Michael Von Gortler, 53, and his daughter, 20-year-old Makana, a University of Colorado student, went to hike up Missouri Mountain on June 22."

Aw, they are cute. I hope they are ok. It seems like a long time, but my wilderness man boyfriend could stay alive forever and it seems like they had some survival skills.

Suzanne Kutz, Makana von Gortler's aunt, said the CU student and her father attended the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, which took place June 16 through 19. They
were planning to go on a day hike at Missouri Mountain, a 14,000-foot peak in Chaffee County, on June 22 and return home that night to Michael von Gortler's second home in Buena Vista.

That started off a search in steep, rugged terrain where rivers are still swollen from high runoff. Swift water teams have been brought in and the Civil Air Patrol is helping in the search.

The sheriff said climbing teams will search cliffs along a four-mile hiking trail on Missouri Mountain on Friday. He said searchers have covered 800 square miles trying to find the missing twosome. Authorities also examined their truck mileage and credit card records and found nothing suspicious.

“They are experts, and Mike is really well versed in plants you can’t eat and how to drink water that is not contaminated with giardia,” Box said. “(They know) different survival tactics that ordinary people that climb fourteeners wouldn’t know.”
Friends and family told CBS4 Dr. Gortler is known for hiking off the beaten path and taking risks, but that he is always prepared when he goes on a hike.

If he has very good survival skills, maybe they have a flare gun or a gps monitor or
??. I don't know. I don't go hiking in the mountains, but I can
only hope that they are awaiting rescue.

How sad. At least these two were together...and doing something they loved. May God bless their family with peace.

"Dr. Michael von Gortler and his daughter, Makana, both died from blunt-force trauma injuries to the head and neck," Amettis said. "There was no indication of injuries from lightning."
Relatives told 7NEWS they believe the two were likely blown off a cliff.
