The ATF has taken over the investigation of a car explosion that left a man and his two children seriously injured in Monroe on Tuesday night.
The Volvo station wagon was traveling on East Elm Avenue, near the ramp to I-75, at 5:41 p.m. when it exploded, Monroe police said in a statement. Investigators on the scene found evidence of a car bomb, according to the statement.

Police did not publicly identify the three victims or say who owns the vehicle. The Monroe Evening News reported law enforcement officials saying the father, reportedly a divorce attorney from Sylvania, Oh., pulled his sons from the burning vehicle.

Monroe police are investigating what caused an explosion in a vehicle that hurt a father and his two young sons Tuesday night.
Police said the explosion happened near the intersection of Elm Avenue and I-75 in a wooded area.
The father and two boys were taken to St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio, where they were in serious condition.
Local 4 has learned that the father is Erik Chappell, an Ohio-based attorney.
Police said the cause of the explosion was being investigated as a possible car bomb or electrical malfunction, but nothing had been confirmed.

sorry to post again LOL... but just wanted to share that St. Vincent's in Toledo has the BEST burn unit in the area where the crash happened. I am sure they are getting good care there and wish their family the best for a speedy recovery.....

"This was not an intent to injure; this was an intent to kill," said a family friend who declined to be identified. "Everybody's going to make it, but there's a lot of heartache ahead. I'm still in shock."

Mr. Chappell was released from the hospital before 11 a.m.

It is believed the device was placed underneath the passenger side of the Chappell car. One of the boys was sitting in the passenger seat and suffered serious lower extremity injuries, especially to his legs.
The bomb may have contained shrapnel, because all three victims suffered wounds from flying debris, officials said.

from looking at the map and pictures... it seriously looks like he had JUST gotten off of 75.

Can you imagine if it had exploded on the highway?????????

eta: I am seriously a little freaked out as I am on 75 daily at the same time of the day around the same area to drive my own ds to football practice! at that time of day 75 is bumper to bumper... tons of traffic... it is such a blessing that they all got out alive and that it did not explode on the highway....

Mr. Chappell, an attorney with Lyden, Liebenthal & Chappell which has offices in Sylvania and Monroe, lives in the upscale North Shores community along Lake Erie in LaSalle Township.

A neighbor, Nancy Sovey, said she saw Mr. Chappell and two boys loading football equipment into his car at the home between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Donald Dawkins, a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, said authorities still don’t know what the device was — or whether it was inside the vehicle or attached to it — when it exploded.

"For the person who did it, it went off when they wanted — unfortunately for everyone else," Mr. Dawkins told The Blade.

He said investigators were working to put it back together from the many pieces that were collected from the scene.

Federal investigators are asking for the public’s help to learn who planted a bomb in the car that exploded Tuesday night, injuring a lawyer and his two sons in Monroe.

“We got a ton of leads,” said Special Agent Donald Dawkins of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. “We have some serious directions that we’re going toward, but none that I can say are concrete.”
