Canada - Possible SK targetting sex trade workers in Ottawa, Ontario

Ottawa Police Chief Vern White issues warning to sex-trade women that’s short on details
The Ottawa Citizen - December 9, 2011

Quote:
OTTAWA — After issuing an unprecedented public safety warning to women Friday, Ottawa Police Chief Vern White refused to rule out the possibility that a Jack the Ripper-type serial killer is targeting the city’s street prostitutes.

With the downtown aboriginal women’s centre Minwaashin as a backdrop, White urged all women to be increasingly “aware, vigilant and safe” but refused to say what had prompted the sudden warning.

He did reveal to reporters that investigators have identified “a pattern” in the homicides of city prostitutes but repeatedly refused to go into detail, suggesting instead that an investigation into the murders was still in its early stages.
Quote:
“In light of recent murders and injuries to various women there is a sense that there is someone who is targeting women,” said Mansfield, who figures only 25 per cent of violent attacks against prostitutes are reported to police.

White said he wasn’t ready to discuss the police investigation.

“I am here at Minwaashin Lodge to speak to Ottawa residents about concerns the Ottawa Police has for women’s safety,” he said. “Our major crime investigators have recently identified a pattern with homicides involving sex trade workers in our community.

The Ottawa Citizen November 25, 2011
Quote:
OTTAWA — Some street prostitutes in Ottawa’s east end say they are unsettled after learning that a john tried to kill one of their colleagues, who was choked unconscious and then dragged to her attacker’s car.

The attack has renewed fears among sex trade workers, already on edge after a series of unsolved street prostitute killings.

Jonathan Mathieu is charged with attempted murder and a little-known charge that carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. The charge of overcoming resistance to commission of offence is described as attempts to choke or strangle.

In an Ottawa Police case that initially was not handled by its sex assault or major-crime units, it is alleged that Mathieu, 30, tried to kill a street prostitute after picking her up in the east end on Sept. 26.

The police theory is that Mathieu brought the prostitute back to his St. Laurent Boulevard apartment, had sex, then tried to strangle her to death.

He choked her until she was unconscious, and by an untrained eye, looked dead.

Police theory that predator is targeting prostitutes doesn’t surprise one victim’s sister
December 13, 2011 9:05 PM
Quote:
Ottawa police have six unsolved homicides dating back 21 years, said acting Police Chief Charles Bordeleau.

“The pattern involves more than one, but we’re not identifying how many of those are in the pattern.”

Police won’t reveal the pattern they have identified, but there are some similarities between a few of the cases.
  • ( 1 ) Melinda Sheppit (16), Sept. 30, 1990 - parking lot - strangled

  • ( 2 ) Sophie Filion (23), Dec. 3, 1993 - parking lot - strangled

  • ( 3 ) Carrie Doloris Mancuso (32), August 1995 - her apartment - asphyxiation

  • ( 4 ) Kelly Morrisseau (27), 2006 - parking lot - stabbed (from 1st. post)

  • ( 5 ) Pamela Kosmack (39), June 2008 - bike path - beaten to death

  • ( 6 ) Jennifer Leigh Stewart (36), August 2010 - parking lot - stabbed

  • ( 7 ) Leeanne Lawson (23), Sept. 2, 2011 - parking lot - strangled
respectfully snipped by me - doing summary, trying not to go over the 10% allowed.

Ottawa sex workers fear predator

Co-dependence on drugs and prostitution leaves sex workers addicted to toxic lifestyle

"Police want info on 'bad dates'

Ottawa Police have encouraged prostitutes to report their "bad dates" directly to police officers, but many prostitutes do not trust the police.

A lack of trust in others started long ago for Angie, who was first adopted from India when she was a child. But Angie entered a group home when she was 12 and then started living on the streets when she was 15."

VANCOUVER - Police are heralding a Downtown Eastside sex-trade worker for coming forward with key information that has led to the arrest of a suspected serial sex attacker alleged to have preyed on area women.

OTTAWA -- Cops once considered convicted murderer Russell Williams a suspect in the series of prostitute murders currently under investigation here.

At least six street-level sex workers have been murdered in Ottawa in the past 21 years. Five deaths are being investigated by Ottawa police. OPP have already solved a sixth death.

“We looked at him upside down and round and round,” Insp. John Maxwell said of Williams, the disgraced Canadian Forces colonel and former CFB Trenton commander who was convicted of killing two women. Williams was one of several persons of interest investigators considered"

Morrisseau murder probed for links to suspected serial killer
Updated: Friday, June 29, 2012 05:23 PM EDT
snippets
Quote:
Gatineau police will reach out to their Winnipeg counterparts to explore any potential links between the unsolved murder of Kelly Morrisseau and those of a suspected serial killer charged in the deaths of three aboriginal women.

Morrisseau, a 27-year-old aboriginal woman who lived in Vanier, was seven months pregnant when her body was found in the early morning hours of Dec. 10, 2006, by a hiker in Gatineau Park. She had been stabbed a dozen times.
Quote:
But with the June 21 arrest in Winnipeg of Shawn Cameron Lamb, the Morrisseau case is getting renewed attention as Gatineau police determine whether there may be any links.
A drug-addled drifter with more than 100 convictions, 52-year-old Lamb is charged in the deaths of three aboriginal women: Tanya Jane Nepinak, Carolyn Sinclair and Lorna Blacksmith.
Quote:
It was also another blow to a family already devastated by an unsolved murder — in 1991, the body of Morrisseau’s aunt, Glenda, was found in a Winnipeg industrial area.

"“First, it was shocking, tears were flowing like crazy,” said Cindy Monday night in an interview with APTN. “I don’t even know there is a word out there to describe how I was feeling. They got the guy. They solved it. I was happy.”

The family immediately wanted answers on who the man is and why he did it, but police said those answers would come.

“I wanted answers on why he did it. How did you know my sister, how did you approach my sister and why?” said Cindy.

Police said they didn’t have motive yet and didn’t know how the suspect knew Pamela.

APTN held off on publishing at the request of the family who said police still needed to make the arrest.

The suspect was supposed to be arrested Tuesday but police told the family “paper work” pushed it to Wednesday."

Police arrest man in Ottawa murders
Quote:
Ottawa police have arrested a man they think is responsible for murders of at least two women in the city.

The suspect was taken into custody Wednesday, in the deaths of two women — but police believe he could be responsible for as many as a total of six murders in the capital.

The man’s name hasn’t been released yet as he hasn’t been charged.

The man was arrested in connection with the deaths of 39-year-old Pamela Kosmack, and 23-year-old Leanne Lawson.

Kosmack’s body was found in June 2008, next to a bike path in the west end of Ottawa. Lawson’s body was found in September 2011, behind a building on King Edward Ave.

Ottawa Police confirmed the arrest, but would not offer any further comment.

Cops make arrest in prostitute murders
Quote:

Ottawa Police say they have made an arrest in the murders of Leanne Lawson, right, in 2011 and Pamela Kosmack, left, in 2008.

Quote:
Ottawa Police Criminal Investigations Directorate Supt. Tyrus Cameron confirmed they have a man in custody in relation to at least two of a string of what police have referred to as prostitute murders in the city, going back two decades.

Sources say the man is Marc Leduc, already in custody, suspected of sexual assault dating back to an incident in November.

Leduc, 56, faces eight previous charges connected to a violent sexual assault at 2155 Elmira Dr. where a man broke into the apartment of a 19-year-old woman and sexually assaulted her at knifepoint.

"Leduc, who sometimes uses the handle “evilmarky” online, is an active Facebook user whose frequent posts on friends’ walls are littered with sexual innuendo. He has also posted photos and quotes from various websites, such as “Dirty White Boy.”

On Oct. 14, three of his friends “liked” a photo that said, “Some hot, rough sex and no thinking would be nice right now.”

Pictures of bikini-clad young women appeared daily on his wall with titles such as “two cuties posing by the pool.”

The father of two also shares pictures of his cat and inspirational quotes such as “Men are the ones who are given strength by God to protect women. So, if you hurt a woman, you are not a man!”
