Search to resume for Ottawa woman, boyfriend missing in New Zealand
The search for an Ottawa woman who went to New Zealand to start a new job operating ultrasonic imaging devices and her boyfriend is set to resume after police discovered a portion of the couple’s wrecked camper.

When the sun comes up in New Zealand Wednesday morning — about 4 p.m. Tuesday in Ottawa — police will deploy a helicopter and boats to search for Connor Hayes, 25, and Joanna Lam, 24. Hayes and Lam were last seen on Fox Glacier on South Island Sept. 10 in the afternoon.

Police will also search for the couple on foot along the Haast River.

Dear mods-I used Australia as prefix because New Zealand was not a choice.

This is the website for one of our main sources for news in NZ. Sadly, things don't look too good. The site was updated 3 hours ago

Missing Canadians Connor Hayes and Joanna Lam are presumed dead after their rented campervan was hit by a slip in stormy conditions and plunged off the road into the Haast River, police say.

While other vehicles turned back because of the weather, it appeared the couple had continued driving along the Haast Pass highway during the storm on Tuesday last week

Police teams in New Zealand have spent two days searching the Haast River for Ottawa couple Joanna Lam and Connor Hayes, but say the chance of finding them alive is "extremely remote."

Lam, 24, and Hayes, 25, were last seen at Fox Glacier on the afternoon of Sept. 10, according to police.

On Tuesday, officers found parts of their wrecked rental van in a gorge in a remote park on the South Island.

They heightened their search Wednesday with a heat--seeking helicopter and a specialist search dog, in addition to a search and rescue boat.

In a statement, Insp. John Canning said police have now declared the search a recovery mission.

very sad I hope these two young people are recovered and returned to their loved ones.

They're such a cute couple. I hope they are okay and found soon.

search teams on the ground and in the air had detected no sign of life downstream from where the wreckage of their van was found in the Haast River on Tuesday, he said.

The operation would now focus on finding the couple's bodies so their families could have closure.

That may not be possible, however, because police believe there is a very real possibility that their bodies were washed out to sea.

I'm confused as to why this thread says they are missing In Australia? Am I missing something?

Hopefully there is still hope for this young couple. I cant imagine what their families are going through.

Is there any way of changing the location listed with this thread? The thread says Australia, but they appear to be missing in New Zealand.

The West Coast of the South Island is a very unforgiving area to go missing in. My partner was raised there and the bush is so thick that if you drove off the road it would be very hard to find a car there.

OTTAWA — Police in New Zealand recovered the body of a woman they believe is the Ottawa resident who went missing almost two weeks ago.

Ottawa couple Joanna Lam, 24, and Connor Hayes, 25, were last seen on Fox Glacier on New Zealand’s South Island the afternoon of Sept. 10.

Barbara Dunn, a spokeswoman for the New Zealand police, told the Citizen that part of a wrecked camper van the two Canadians rented before they disappeared was found in a remote location in very “rugged country” with little cellphone coverage.

On Friday around 2:30 p.m. in New Zealand, police found a woman’s body at the beach between Haast and Knights Point, close to where the fuel tank from their vehicle was recovered earlier in the week.

Police said formal identification needs to be done before they can confirm the body found is that of Lam. Police have not found Lam’s boyfriend.

Poor things.

Spare a thought also for the locals, who live in fear of the helicopters overhead - it means that yet another tourist has underestimated the conditions.

I am a kiwi by birth and I would never, ever, go skipping up those mountains. Ever. Folks just don't realise how treacherous it is - beautiful, but extremely unforgiving.

My brother does things like that but he's a proper snow caver (yes such a thing exists) but even he wouldn't go that isolated or in that sort of terrain.
