Personal Experience, Family and Friends

Luckily I had a couple of people pm me that have helped me thru this.
My family on my fathers side all live in Gulfport or Biloxi. I have yet to hear from them or find their names on the Red cross list.
My hubby's buddy found his house was floating down the river. He bailed and swam. The house went one way he swam another way. After 2 hrs. a boat came along and saved him. It was a another MS resident. From there they went on to save 31 more people in the water.
I have no idea where my family on my dads side is now. My father died too young at 54. He would be upset to think I did not find them.
When Camile hit we went there. I was not more than a toddler but I recall my fathers fight to get to his family.
Now I have no idea where they are.
We had an attorney in Metarie that lived in the neighborhood of Ann Rice. She has since moved but the houses there are gone.
Mainly my husband knows people from New Orleans and all have lost their homes.
They have decided to take home from Texas where they were sent and start over.
I was upset seeing the Gulfport library as my uncle is a board member and the library's books are washed away, I've yet to find him.

Bebca, My heart goes out to you.

BillyGoatGruff also started a list of sites in the Missing forum to post for family and friends. There are a lot of them.
I am willing to help you post on as many of them as we can get to before you hear from your family. Prepare a statement and a list of which sites you want me to contact, and I would be more than happy to start posting them.

Can't find my cousin

Any suggestions? I have registered with several on line data bases and e-mailed a church I think she belonged to in New Orleans. My son called me the other night to say someone was looking for her, an old friend. I did go to the Blog Herald where he was looking for her. I posted a response and before long he also posted one to answer me. I called him on the phone and we had a great chat. He knew my cousins from years and years ago and kept in touch. One cousin died in 1993 and the other one lived out near the lake. He always called her before storms and she told him where she was going. This time he didn't call. She's about 94. He e-mailed me back twice with information about which church her old Baptist congregation met in currently. I did e-mail a contact there, but haven't heard yet. I doubt if she's on a computer or may not be with anyone who has a computer. She had mentioned to this gentleman that she had friends in Baton Rouge.

Her name is Harriet Weymouth. Address: 6740 Catina St., New Orleans, LA 70124. A google map will show that she's just a few blocks from Lake Ponchetrain. Any suggestions? I've registered with the Red Cross and also requested a search at the coast guard site. Also registered with a church site. I'm sure her house is under water and I hope she evacuated as she did before during other storm threats.

There is also a thread in the missing forum called the missing from katrina or something like that. Lots of sites there. If you PM me a list of sites that you want posted to, and a prepared statement, I am willing to do some posting to help out.

The New Orleans side. Near City Park Golf Course. North of I10/I610 just off Ponchatrain Blvd before it dead ends to Robert E Lee Blvd. She was born September 12, 1911. Tomorrow is her birthday.

Oh my, she is really up in years, maybe she was taken to an elderly care facility. The said they took out the elderly & children first. Try looking for the elderly care facilities outside of NO.

One of Tybee's links led me to a nursing home link for elderly residents. She wasn't on it.

Becba and Barngoddess, I hope you find your missing family members. Soon and very soon!

My family experienced a loss, but it is such a small thing compared to all the tragedy we see around us. My MIL's vacation condo blew apart into toothpicks! No one was in it, so we just lost a building. We will miss our vacations, but hey, we all have each other.

Thanks to everyone who responded.

I have searched many of the sites that list people that have been found. My hope is they got out as I haven't seen any of their names.

We did find one family we were looking for and they are staying with family, luckily they were on vacation when the storm came.

I am so impressed by all the victims that hung on and fought for their lives to make it thru this tragedy. And those that rescued so many people.

According to this article, Lycos and Yahoo sifts through a number of missing person sites from Katrina looking for the names you enter. Thus you will be searching for the person you enter at multiple sites at once. The Lycos search even allows you to suggest more sites to search. Looks like a good option for those searching for people from Katrina.

Thanks Mysteriew. I checked but no luck so far.

I am thinking and hoping people like my uncle evacuated and are staying with friends.
My hubby is in Fouchaues (sp) in port and he has a hard time getting out on his cell phone still, so I know phone calls are still difficult.
On an encouraging note he did say areas are being cleaned up quickly where he is, and they are getting electricity and cell towers back on line.

I've located most of the people I know, including my 1st husband, although about 5 remain unaccounted for. Most are in Texas, or headed in that direction.
One went from the SuperDome to the AstroDome to Nashville. Another is in the Cajun Dome in Lafayette, while his mother in a private residence in Baton Rouge. Another is across the lake in Covingtonw ith his mother (at least i assume she's still alive). Another made it back home to Arkansas, while another escaped after the 1st with her dogs & cats. One left town with a friend along River Road--and made sure he was packing heat when he left. I am resigned to the fact I may NEVER know what happened to a couple of people, one way or another.
