FBI Busts Alleged Child Prostitution Ring

Federal investigators said a New Jersey home served as the local headquarters for a business that enticed underage teens to sell their bodies for sex.

After a year-long investigation, authorities shut it down this week, as part of a national crackdown called "Operation Lost Innocence."

Authorities said the suspects were part of a sophisticated business that illegally raked in millions of dollars by allegedly recruiting and trafficking numerous underage prostitutes as young as 13 between Atlantic City, Las Vegas, New York and several other cities.

"There were a couple airlines they would frequently use to transport them around the country," said Steve Silvern, of the FBI.

Investigators said Matthew Thompkins, 36, was the ring leader and is among eight people indicted on federal charges. A New York mail carrier by day, Thompkins was known as "Knowledge" the pimp by night, the FBI said.

Why is it that when a custodial parent fails to provide for a child it is called neglect and is a criminal matter. But when a non custodial parent fails to provide it is called failure to support and is a civil matter?

Prostitution rings from New York to Hawaii forced more than 30 children as young as 12 to have sex at truck stops, hotels and brothels, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Friday, announcing a government crackdown.
Nineteen people have been arrested among 31 who have been charged with sexual trafficking in children, taking minors across state lines for prostitution and other crimes, he said.

Indictments in Michigan, New Jersey and Pennsylvania target the purported operators of four child prostitution rings. Some of the children had been reported missing or had run away because they had been abused at home, FBI assistant director Chris Swecker said.

In Detroit, a grand jury charged four Ohio residents with forcing two girls, 14 and 15, to have sex at a truck stop in Michigan. The girls had been held as virtual prisoners in Toledo, Ohio, where they were told to address one defendant, Deric Willoughby, as "Daddy," and taken to hotels for prostitution. Their payments were eventually turned over to Willoughby, the indictment said.
"If you're bright as a pimp, and thank God a lot of them aren't, you move them every two to three weeks."

That story just makes me sick.

It was a multi million $$ operation. Organized and run like a business. Imagine how many more are out there.

"children from Toledo as well as Pennsylvania, Michigan, New Jersey, and Hawaii "

Hmm... i do remember reading about missing children from these areas .. a girl named Shadow from Hawaii comes to mind.

I wonder if they would release the names of the kids. Probably not since they were minors but if they were missing kids, it sure would help alleviate some of the sadness that many other people felt, too, who were looking for them.

This is just terrible. I hope all individuals involved in forming this "ring" as well as engaging in disgusting acts with these poor kids get the most severe punishments!

Does anyone remember about a year ago, the young girl that was recovered? She said that she had been kidnapped, and taken to a house and forced into prostitution? I believe that she may have been an illegal alien. Her brother had also been kidnapped, then released I believe and he was the one who gave info related to her recovery. I wonder if that is related to this case.

I do wonder how many of the people on our missing forum mya be directly related to this case. How scary.
How sad.

How sad, too, for parents who may be out there looking for their kids, thinking they are dead.

I hope these kids are reuinited with family who care as soon as possible. I hope they get the care, the love and the much needed counseling they most likely need.

In one of the largest coordinated crackdowns against child prostitution in the United States, the government has arrested 19 people and charged more than 30 across several states.

The crackdown was the latest phase of an ongoing national investigation into criminal enterprises involved in the recruitment of children for prostitution called "Innocence Lost."

Charges have been filed in recent days in Florida, Michigan, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and others are expected, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk about the topic before Gonzales' announcement.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and FBI Assistant Director Chris Swecker announced the recent arrests a news conference in Washington today, saying that the operation has identified more than 30 child victims, bringing the overall total identified to more than 200 since 2003.

A grand jury in Camden, New Jersey, indicted eight people Wednesday on charges they conspired to recruit girls to be prostitutes in Atlantic City, Las Vegas and New York, according to court documents. The defendants managed a prostitution ring that also extended to Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia, the indictment said.

Matthew Thompkins and five others were arrested Sunday and are in custody in New Jersey, the official said. Thompkins had a central role in the conspiracy, the indictment said.

Two other defendants, Jennifer Huskey and Brandy Shope, are adults who also worked as prostitutes, the indictment says.

A fourth person, Richard Lamar Gordon, is identified in the indictment as a truck driver who took the girls from a parking lot in the Toledo area to the Michigan truck stop and had sex with one of them. He has not been arrested, the official said.

In one of the largest coordinated enforcement actions undertaken against child prostitution rings in the US, 19 suspects were arrested and over 30 additional suspects were charged in the latest phase of “Innocence Lost,” a major investigation into criminal enterprises involved in the recruitment of children for prostitution.

As a result of this law enforcement operation, over 30 child victims were identified, bringing the total of child victims identified to more than 200 since the start of the Innocence Lost initiative in 2003. Property seizures in this latest sweep included residential homes, vehicles, US currency, electronics, jewelry, and child pornography images.

Twelve suspects were charged, but remain fugitives.

"This is a crime of hidden victims," said John Rabun, Vice President of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. “Many think child trafficking is only a problem in foreign countries, but nothing can be further from the truth. Thanks to the FBI’s leadership, more victims are being uncovered and more perpetrators arrested.”

In a separate case in Michigan, suspects Deric Willoughby, Brandy Shope, Jennifer Huskey, and Richard Lamar Gordon were indicted on December 13, 2005 by a federal grand jury in Detroit.

The defendants are charged with 5 counts each including sexual exploitation of children, transportation of children for the purpose of prostitution, sexual trafficking of children, interstate transportation of minors for prostitution, conspiracy, and aiding and abetting.

Innocence Lost: Feds Nail Members of Child Prostitution Ring

Federal agents claimed a decisive victory over those who exploit children through prostitution and pornography in one of the biggest child abuse cases ever.

Indictments and criminal complaints were filed in four US Districts (the Middle District of Pennsylvania, the District of New Jersey, the Eastern District of Michigan, and the District of Hawaii). They charged 31 individuals with various offenses including the transportation of minors to engage in prostitution, attempting to coerce and entice minors to engage in prostitution, sex trafficking in children, kidnapping, witness tampering, possession and distribution of child pornography, illegal firearms possession, illegal drug offenses, money laundering and tax evasion. Twelve suspects were charged, but remain fugitives.
